Great
Joining this school has been an excellent experience for both me and my family. The teachers and coaches are excellent with kids and I’ve been able to make great improvements in my own martial arts journey in a very short amount of time. The environment is super friendly, family oriented, with just the right amount of competitive spirit. Great for beginners as well as experienced martial artists.
Our son was very reluctant to take classes i. The beginning, and that is putting it mildly…. Within about 15 minutes of training on the first day, I saw him laughing with joy. He looks forward to every class. We are thrilled so far with this school.
Incredible staff and program!! The teachers care so much about the kids and have such a strong understanding of how to help them succeed. Highly recommend!!
Great place to train, workout and connect with people. The professor's really work to meet you where you are, and they take a personal interest in their students. If you have ever thought about trying Brazilian Jui-Jitsu this the place to go.
I have been taking my son to the Tiny Sharks class for almost a year now and he has really enjoyed it. We had tried getting him into other sports previously, but nothing had grabbed his attention. After two classes we began going consistently three times a week and seeing his excitement to get to class has been wonderful. As the year has progressed there has been a clear difference in his confidence as he is now excited to demonstrate the skills he has learned, especially crazy horse! It has been a great bonding experience for both of us and I am very happy we decided to give the class a try!
My son has been attending the tiny sharks program for almost a year now and we have nothing but great things to say about 5150. He loves going because of how warm and caring the professors are. We’ve seen such growth in the time he has been attending and are so appreciative of the time and care everyone puts into to helping him, even at such a young age.
Excellent establishment! Self defense and jiu-jitsu training with a "same team" mentality. From feet to the floor, members are very helpful breaking down each lesson so learning jiu-jitsu is easy! Adult and junior students alike are very welcoming with a focus on long term learning and high level goals. 4 years later, we still feel at home with ur ever growing jiu-jitsu family.
Amazing experience for my 8 year old, as he has developed more discipline and physical skills
Amazing experience for my 8 year old, as he has developed more discipline and physical skills
We moved to Florida three years ago and still haven’t been able to find a place as good as 5150. We come back to visit once or twice a year and the kids always insist we stop in to say hi to the Professors and squeeze in a class before going home.
My daughter has been in the program for a little over a year and has definitely thrived in the way of building confidence and self-esteem. Professor Scott and Shapiro are so invested in the kids and it shows! They’re always hosting free trial events to welcome in new students. We highly recommend!
I (and my son (7 years old) have been training at 5150 for more than a year. This is a truly amazing place and I highly recommend it to anyone. For years, I tried a number of places to continue learning MMA; however, it never worked until I found Professor O'Keeffe. He is caring, thoughtful, skillful, fun, and tough all at the same time, which is a rare combination. He has a contagious love for jiu-jitsu and the innate ability to teach. My son also loves going to train. He has learning valuable skills (on and off the mat), has gained confidence and has fun. Professor Shapiro not only teaches valuable skills but also makes the classes fun and engaging. All and all, my family feels very lucky we found 5150 and recommended it to everyone.
Great Classes and Great Instructors Joined in March been in class ever since the environment is Great!
We have been coming here for about a month with our 8 year old daughter who refused ALL after school activities and sports. Finally she has found her thing and we know it's in part to the amazing professors and environment 5150 Martial Arts creates for the children. We've seen her confidence grow and we love how they marry discipline, fun and standing up for yourself (both physically and verbally). Very happy here!
My daughter has been going to 5150 for a few months now and loves it! The professors are amazing. They provide a safe, neutering environment that allowed my daughter to feel comfortable immediately. They really focus on self defense and confidence when dealing with a bully or unwanted interaction. The learning environment is serious but fun and the kids work really well together. We’re so happy we found a place like this for our daughter.
My family has been attending 5150 for over a year now. It’s become more than a martial arts academy; it’s a true second family. Professors O’Keeffe and Shapiro are wonderful instructors who genuinely care for not only skill development, but also the wellbeing of everyone that’s part of 5150. I highly recommend 5150 for anyone looking to get themselves and/or their kids involved in martial arts.
Having had a vague interest in jiujitsu for a long time, I showed up at 5150 after some long health challenges feeling weak and a bit scared. Five months later I cannot wait to show up for each and every class. I feel stronger, happier, and a part of a community of people that looks out for each other. My body and brain are stimulated. The professors of 5150 have gifted that to me, encouraging me at each turn, accepting where my abilities are and always knowing and expecting that I can exceed that. Jiujitsu is great fun, 5150 is full of great training partners, and showing up is one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Our family loves this place. Family atmosphere that teaches discipline and structure. My son always looks forward to coming here. As parents we love that the teachers are attentive and able to adapt to the ever changing environment with the children’s classes. I picked this class because I wanted to spend time with my son and help teach him new things. This class allows me to do both. We love it here!!!
We absolutely love 5150! My son has been here since he was 4 and not only has it helped with his discipline but it’s helped maintain his focus and his ability to follow directions. It’s definitely the best outlet for any little young one to get their energy out while learning martial arts. The professors foster a warm welcoming and supportive instructional environment that allows the kids to grow. We’re looking forward to growing with the 5150 family for years to come!
My son is a gentle giant and as he gets older we wanted to help increase his confidence and ability to defend himself. We decided to sign him up at 5150 Martial Arts and in the short amount of time he has been attending, it has been a game changer. He is becoming more independent and self-confident. The instructors have created an amazing culture of support, integrity, and respect. Our son loves going there!
Jiu Jitsu at 5150 has been a wonderful experience for my child's growth and confidence over the past year. Improved social skills and motivation. The professors are kind and supportive. Would highly recommend.
Best jiu-jitsu program around!!! Our entire family absolutely loves attending classes at 5150 Martial Arts for more than 2 years. Our now 6 year old asks to go to class every day and we love the fact that she is not only learning self defense, but also respect, humility, healthy habits, gaining self-confidence and making friends in the process. I recommend this program to children and adults of all abilities. Professors O'Keefe and Shapiro have created a safe place where everyone feels like family and can learn in a supportive environment.
I cannot recommend 5150 enough! The professors are amazing at what they do and the entire environment could not be more positive and encouraging! My daughter started in tiny sharks and she was nervous to join the kids classes but she is now thriving and loving every second! Every class the kids learn not only Jiu Jitsu and self defense skills but also valuable lifelessons from integrity ee to respect and it’s just such a great way to learn! I feel incredibly lucky to have this school within driving distance for my kids to be able to attend! It’s truly a Blessing! 🙌 Thanks you Professor Shapiro and Professor O’Keefe for everything you do!!! You guys are incredible!!!
My twin 6 year old boys starting taking classes at 5150 a few months ago. I am beyond happy with the program and dedication of the professors! The skills they teach are ones that can be applied anywhere. I also love that they teach them the steps of what to do BEFORE they defend themselves! My boys ABSOLUTELY love class and can’t wait to go! Professor Shapiro and Professor O’Keeffe are THE BEST!!! Thank you 5150!!!
My son loves going to class! the instructors are fantastic and the lessons are well planned and fun. We checked out a few other ju jitsu schools, but I knew when we walked in here, it was the place for us. highly recommend!!!!
The owners are so polite and helpful. They had a Christmas event for parents with students, what an enjoyable and educational experience. Thank you, guys, for taking our son Gavin and teaching him the art of Jiu-jitsu.
My family and I have attended 5150 for over a year and this academy has been amazing. The professors have been nothing but exceptional with me and my kids. They are a great place to learn and grow. I'd highly recommend the academy to any family wishing to learn and gain confidence.
Professors Shapiro and O'Keefe have an incredible ability to connect with their students. They earn their trust and respect instantly. My daughter was very nervous about her first class, but with Professor Shapiro's support, she quickly fell in love with jiu jitsu. I was amazed to see how quickly my daughter's confidence grew, and how excited she continues to be about every class. I highly recommend 5150 to anyone.
The best jujitsu school….my son loves it and he looks forward to hanging out with his dad every Saturday. As a parent working with your child gives it a more personal experience with my son. Since starting my sons more confident and has come out of his shell I recommend this school to any parent.
All I can say is thank goodness I found this place when I did. (I'll try and keep it brief, but can go on forever) Through 5150 I found Jui Jitsu and it provided both a physical and mental workout that I've never experienced. There are plenty of places that offer Jui Jitsu but at 5150 you get respect, compassion, the right amount of drive. Professor Shapiro is unbelievable with this kids, she has an ability to break complex techniques down so a child can understand them- and she's just as good with Adults. Professor O'Keefe has a lovable way about him and an unmatched attention to detail. They are an excellent compliment to each other. They care about their students and want to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible inside the classes. If you're on the fence about Jiu Jitsu, 5150 is a great place to start!
Most my family goes here. Amazing place, amazing professors and very fun
Professor Shapiro, Professor O'Keefe & staff are amazing! They wonderfully train with the kids while keeping them focused. The facility is spotless. We love attending class... started last January but WISH WE STARTED EARLIER!!! I would recommend 5150 to all! My son has gained such great knowledge in self defense while working on focus.
The instructors and students at 5150 are amazing! They are warm, friendly, welcoming and provide a diverse atmosphere. They focus on building the techniques & practices necessary to excel in the sport & in life. The children learn the practice of jiujitsu while also gaining self confidence, building new friendships and learning about respect for themselves and others. I signed my 3 children up a year ago and it’s been an absolutely positive experience.
My son loves it here. Awesome people, great motivators.
Two of our children train at 5150. We feel the instructors do a great job keeping the kids focused while also allowing them to have fun. They track the progress of each students and motivate the kids. We appreciate all the effort 5150 do for our kids.
Love them! My daughter has been training with 5150 for about a year now and she loves it. They make the training a lot of fun for kids. Definitely recommend.
I love this place, it’s like a second home to me! I’ve never practiced jujitsu before and I was nervous at first but Professor O” Keefe trains his students very well where they feel comfortable rolling with other students. The class is very competitive whether you’re a white wanting to learn this or a black belt looking for a new home! The kickboxing classes are awesome too it’s an amazing workout and I feel substantially more confident with myself. I highly recommend this to anyone in any age range whether you want to learn how to defend yourself or get in amazing shape!
Amazing place, amazing people, and an amazing experience! The classes don't just teach martial arts as they also focus on life experiences, positive values, and interaction with others. The 5150 team has gone above and beyond during COVID. They offer remote classes via zoom and live classes using a combination of outdoor and indoor sessions. The leaders have exceeded all of my expectations via their protocols and it's helping to keep everyone safe. This is one of the few places where I trust bringing my children during COVID. I strongly recommend 5150.
Great for kids! My 4 year old loves 5150 Martial Arts. Highly recommended for those looking to put their young ones in a safe, active and caring program.
5150 is an awesome place to go to learn martial arts for young and adults. Would and have recommended to anyone looking for a fun, friendly, motivating and dedicated place for themselves or their children. The instructors are excellent role models.
One of the best decisions we've made as parents this year has been enrolling our two kids in martial arts at 5150. They both LOVE it, would go every single day of the week if they could, and we have seen their confidence levels soar. The staff at 5150 are so great at what they do. They know every single child's name and are so upbeat and encouraging. We also hosted their birthday party at 5150 (last night actually!) and it was such a fun (and easy) experience. The kids and their friends were 100% engaged and having so much fun the entire time.
Ryan and Riya had a blast on their birthday!! wonderful staff, indeed a great experience, love the atmosphere!!!
I am a distance runner and a frisbee player, and now I am a kickboxer. I've been going to 5150 for 18 months so far, and will be going for the rest of my life. The cardio workout I get from kickboxing is more intense than running because it emphasizes those secondary, balancing muscles which help with explosive power and passing others on raceday. Not to mention feeling more confident about my ability to defend myself if necessary. It is an inclusive community of good people coming together to support each other through our daily lives. The instructors have passion and patience. Programs range from "kinder-kicks" to adult kickboxing and jiu-jitsu, and self-defense includes knife fighting, one and two-handed grabs and chokes, throws, and of course my FAVORITE...kali sticks. Come by and see what it's all about! -Mike
family oriented safe and clean environment
Great dojo, very energetic and intense training, great bonding
Our son started kinderkicks (karate) about a year ago and it has made a clear difference in discipline and following directions. Mission accomplished. I started the adult Jiu-Jitsu class about 8 months ago. It’s a great way to stay in shape and it is super addicting. I have met and trained with great people that have become my friends. There are no power trips in the higher belts. They will turn around and train with you and help you grow! Great school!
I started at 5150 over three years ago... best decision I’ve ever made! I’ve done everything from spin, to group training classes, to running random trots/races... . this by far has been the most rewarding experience for me mentally and physically. I’m in the best shape of my life thanks to 5150! I love the trainers and I’ve made life long friends that have become my second family. I highly recommend 5150!
I started at 5150 about 2 years ago looking to learn some self defense and get in shape, and now I don't know what I would do without it! Both the Kickboxing and JiuJitsu classes are fantastic and have taught me I have far more athletic potential than I ever dreamed. The instructors are knowledgeable, the classes are well paced and the music selections are on point. Also, getting to know everyone at the gym has been a delight, and knowing your classmates really helps with the motivation to work out!
I absolutely love the leadership at 5150. My two boys have been going here for almost two years and they are obsessed. It’s taught them how to be focused and has built their self confidence. I highly recommend this program to any parent and their child!
Our son LOVES 5150, he would go every single day if we could get him there! The Professor, Sensei and support staff are all very knowledgeable, professional and super family oriented. I highly recommend this place!
I have been going to 5150 since I was 5 and a half. Now, I’m almost 7. In the beginning, I was nervous and scared to take class, but Sensei Irene is so nice and she made me feel comfortable. Professor is so silly; he makes all of the kids laugh Andrea makes sure we have a good time while learning. My class is so much fun and I have made a lot of new friends. -Ethan Grabush
5150 is a physical and spiritual haven among all the muckety-muck that is polluting our world right now. Both my husband and daughter are dedicated members (my daughter since kindergarten and she's now a 4th grader and my husband for about 2 years). As technology encroaches upon our sense of well-being, it is SO NICE to know that the Sensei and Professor have your back and truly care about the individual and how they are growing and performing as people. Bravo 5150. Oh...and I have to mention Kris! Her backround support is stellar :o}
5150 Martial Arts is truly a special place. It has a great atmosphere, friendly staff, top notch equipment and best in class martial arts instruction. Whether you want to train in Muy Thai kickboxing or Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu OR BOTH you will benefit from their decades of knowledge and experience under the leadership of Professor Scott O'Keeffe. If you're looking to get in better shape and learn self defense don't wait. At 47, I've got 2 years in and am 40 lbs. down and I can't wait for the next class!
I joined last summer to get in shape and learn more about kickboxing as a sport. Since then I can say I have tremendously improved and have learned a lot. Great place, wonderful people and amazing instructors! Highly suggest for anyone who needs motivation to get in shape but also have fun while doing it!!!
Have you ever been interested in trying something your scared of or intimidated by? I loved the idea of being Rocky in my mind, of knowing all the punches, the footwork, sweating the best sweat, and having the time fly as your burning calories..it sounded great but I was so worried about what others would think, say, how I would look that I kept letting those voices get in my way. Until one day, I took a class at 5150 with Sensei Irene. Little did I know what I would really get out of my time here thus far. It is a place where there is no judgement, we are all different shapes and sizes, it is a place where others truly have your best interest, and you have theirs, it is a place where you learn from the best, and you feel the passion and commitment from Sensei, it is a place where you feel strong, inside and out, it is a place where you let all your insecurities go and you have fun, and I mean fun! I love 5150 and all the people who are apart of this growing family. So if you ever wanted to be a "Rocky", come give it a try! I promise you won't regret it.
Two of our children train at 5150 and we could not be happier. We feel the instructors do a great job keeping the kids focused while also allowing them to have fun. All of the Sensei's and Professor strive to make a personal connection with the kids. They call our children by name in class, even when it has been months since our last Jiu Jitsu visit. :-) We appreciate the effort 5150 puts into not only training the children but bonding with the families. We could not be happier with our decision to try 5150.
My first interaction with 5150 came at a high school track, where I saw students and parents running around the track working out together. As a parent that wanted to enroll my kids in a martial arts school, I immediately liked how involved the parents were with their children's training. Soon afterwards, not only have we enrolled the kids, but my wife and I are members of the school as well. Professor O'Keefe and Sensei Shapiro are great teachers, they have incredible patience with the kids and the are encouraging. But I also like how they are firm and demanding as well. While they're able to keep the kids motivated with encouragement and fun, they also don't allow fooling around to get out of hand. As a member of the adult class, I feel like I am constantly pushed to get better, and I leave each class looking forward to the next one, even as I am exhausted from the intense workout. My family and I are currently in the kickboxing and self defense classes, but look forward to starting Jiu Jitsu too. If you're looking for a fun, safe environment for you family to learn self defense and martial arts, 5150 is the place the be. The community here is great, and the higher ranking belts are really helpful to those of us that are just starting out. There is a sense of family and friendship here, and we're happy to be a part of it.
Family atmosphere with friendly people who always push themselves to their limits and beyond. No patty cake pads.
Ever since starting Kickboxing at 5150 I have been noticeably stronger and have felt healthier. The teachers are great, the classes are fun and everyone is super friendly. Highly recommend!
Fantastic positive energy here; has helped my daughter develop confidence and focus, all the while having fun! Such a welcoming and warm place
What a great place!!!! My son took classes for a year and I was encouraged to try it out! The instructors are awesome!!! The place is so welcoming....truly a family atmosphere!!
My 16 year old son and I have been attending 5150 Martial Arts for about 18 months now. We have both just received our blue belts in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and are very happy to have found such a great place to train! This would not have been possible without the awesome instructors and students at 5150. They are very professional, knowledgeable and made us feel right at home! They have also been very patient and supportive throughout our Jiu-Jitsu journey as sometimes our outside schedules can get in the way of training. As a bonus, if you are a UFC or MMA fan such as myself, 5150 also provides you access to some of the greatest minds ever in the sport. Seminars with Master Royler Gracie and Professor David Adiv, the head of Gracie Academy of NJ, are open to all students on a regular basis. We have discovered that Jiu-Jitsu is not just a martial art but it is also a big family who supports each other. We are proud to be a part of Team 5150!
Great atmosphere, great people, great exercise!
The people are awesome- the kids learn & everyone gets healthy and learns self-defense.
I chose this school based on the reviews and I am so glad I did. I enrolled my son last year when he turned 3. He loves it!!!! It has really helped him with focus, balance, coordination, patience, confidence and it is a great workout . An added bonus is the great birthday parties they have there. We had 20 kids ranging in age from 3-7 and everyone had a blast! Everything about this school is great!
I have been training at 5150 Martial Arts for over 10 years. I started when I was six and the instructors here have become like family to me. I have grown up in the dojo and martial arts is the only form of sport I take part in and I wouldn't want it any other way. This school has helped me through so much and have helped me become the confident person I am today. Learning self-defense has made me feel much more comfortable and safe when I'm out, and kickboxing makes me feel empowered and proud of myself. I am proud to call myself a martial artist and I plan on continuing my journey with 5150 for many years to come.
Great instruction, great atmosphere, great people! Join, you won't regret it!
I truly love everything about the school. They really care about every person that walks through their door. Its had such a HUGE impact on my son's life especially since he couldn't sit still when he first started a year ago.Their are extremely patient and are so involved in each child's progress. I have also decided to join and take the adult kickboxing classes which are so freakin awesome! Thank you to the 5150 crew for having an amazing impact to my family and the community. You guys ROCK!
My son has taken classes at 5150 for a few years now and find some challenging and enjoyable. He is eight years old and tends to be introverted and a bit anxious and the classes have really helped him feel more confident. The instructors have been patient and understanding while challenging him to do his best and help him gain confidence he needs. I would highly recommend 5150 martial arts to both children and adults!
What confidence my 3 kids have now! Such a welcoming environment, 5150 teaches the kids to respect themselves and others. Flexible schedules, affordable pricing for families and positive environment.
A high-energy, supportive and encouraging environment fueled by knowledgeable, professional leaders!!
The 5150 family is so supportive, the instructors constantly support us individually which is great! The instructors are knowledgeable and it is such a great way to work out. Getting stronger and loosing weight, what could be better!!
I have two daughters who are polar opposites. One is beyond hyper and confident, the other is shy and not as confident in herself. 5150 Martial Arts staff connected with each of my daughters, making them each feel special as individuals. They keep the girls laughing and serious all at once in class and bring out confident, self-disciplined girls. Additionally, as a parent sitting and watching, waiting till class is over you feel welcomed, respected and understood. There is no push to give more than you or your children want to give to the study of Martial Arts, simply guidance. The girls always leave with smiles on their faces and a sense of accomplishment in their heart. If you are looking for a place to bring your children to study Martial Arts I highly recommend you come to 5150 Martial Arts!
5150 really knows what they’re doing and genuinely cares about the individual student. As a knowledgeable and caring team, they use their expertise to personalize their programs when and where they can to each student’s needs. For example after numerous surgeries, I thought I was stuck in place feeling the way I did. But with their help and the fun we have in each class, I’m doing more than I thought possible and don’t I plan on looking back. Before participating in any class, they take the time to understand any health concerns and personal goals. Always encouraging, everyone here is very attentive to individual progress. The atmosphere is very supportive from the sensei to fellow students.
5150 has been a great place for my daughter. They have truly taken her in and due to their nurturing and enthusiasm 5150 has become a second home for her. She has grown in confidence and athleticism.
My daughter has been with 5150 for nearly 2 years and is a high brown belt. She is 11, and before this has never stuck with an activity for more than a single season. She loves it here, both the karate and the community. If we would drive her, she would come six days a week. She also helps out with the younger classes, because she enjoys the process so much. We have found that it has helped her discipline overall, in school and at home. The staff is dedicated to knowing and helping each individual child, and we completely trust them with her.
My son, who recently turned 9, has been studying karate at 5150 since he was 3. He began as a tiny thing, what they call a "kinderkick", and is now a first-degree junior black belt. 5150 gets my highest recommendation as a place where, in the context of learning martial arts, children can deeply increase their levels of focus, discipline, motor skills, self-confidence, respect for others, and a host of other extremely positive bi-products that can be applied to all aspects of life and learning. My son is an excellent student, athlete and musician, and to a good extent I attribute his successes in areas outside of karate to the skills he has developed from an early age at 5150. The teachers at the school are outstanding. They strike the perfect balance between no-nonsense mentors providing serious instruction with a nurturing, loving, family environment. In their work with children, they never forget that they are dealing with kids, and their use of humor goes a long way to keep little ones motivated. They are insightful in evaluating children based on their individual characteristics and they are willing to push them along with a firmer hand as appropriate. My son has cemented lasting friendships with other children attending 5150 and his love and respect for his teachers, teachers who have been their consistently over the course of six years, is really a joy to watch. If you're thinking of enrolling your child in a martial arts school, I recommend 5150 Martial Arts without reservation.
My 4 & 6 year olds love this program! The instructors are incredible! The environment is warm and loving. Each of the instructors have built a rapport with my kids that has helped them to blossom in all aspects of life! They have become more confident, more driven, stronger, more focused, and better behaved! The staff is wonderful to work with and extremely accommodating! We couldn't be happier! So glad we listened to our friend's referral!
I trained in a traditional martial arts dojo 15 years ago, and I have been searching for a similar experience since. The intensity and variety of the workouts at 5150 have provided me with that experience. I have been training for just over one year at 5150, and discovered a new joy: Brazilian jiu jitsu. I happened to start attending the BJJ classes just as the new program was being introduced to the dojo, and simply fell in love with the new skill set and intense challenges that BJJ presents. Additionally, the Muay Thai class on Fridays will make your heart thump. Are you up for a challenge? The mats await...
5150 Martial Arts is the place to be to train and exercise and at the same time earn a martial arts degree. I’m a working progress and I am proud to say that I’ve earned my 3rd degree black belt after many years. The dojo’s atmosphere is welcoming and pleasant because the instructors are friendly, accommodating, considerate, compassionate to all ages and levels of students. You will be amazed at the instructors as they share their experiences, knowledge, and expertise. Shihan O’Keefe – you’ve been my instructor from day one and will continue to be. I am privileged to be under your wings and I can’t thank you enough for the opportunity. Sensei Shapiro, Sensei Alvarez and Sensei Andrade – thank you for all your support! And to all the students of 5150, YOU ROCK!
5150 Martial Arts is a phenomenal martial arts school with amazing instructors. Each of my family members has been a student at one time. Currently my 6 year old son and I are students and we look forward to classes throughout the week. As an adult, I love the exercise, skills work, and teamwork that 5150 Martial Arts offers. This has quickly become a passion of mine and I look forward to the years ahead. For my children, 5150 Martial Arts offers a supportive and structured environment that positively impacts all of the other parts of their lives: school, relationships and self-esteem. 5150 offers a variety of workshops aside from their regularly scheduled programs and is always looking for new ways to engage their students. Shihan and all of the Senseis are unbelievable people and teachers and I would not go anywhere else.
After much consideration and research into a sport for one of my children that was not doing well in traditional team sports, we looked into karate. We asked friends and family for recommendations. Finally we were sent an initiation for a fundraiser - a month’s trial for $99, with all monies going back to our school. After coming out of the trial class, my kids almost cried when we told them we would think about it and they would have to wait until their trial was over to formally sign up. After only the first week, we felt that the staff treated our kids as if they had been there since birth. And that has never changed. They can also sense the moods of the kids coming into class and come out and have casual conversations with the parents. This is the first sport I have enrolled my children into where we feel so comfortable and involved. If there are any issues we can rest assured that their sensei(s) will help us through them. Almost one year later, three of our four are in karate, two on their way to black belt, with the youngest looking to get to the advanced class with his siblings as soon as he can! The 5150 family is a wonderful, close-knit family.
My child has been attending 5150 Martial Arts for almost 4 years. 5150 has been a lot more than learning how to kick, punch, and defend yourself... the instructors instill values that I support in my home--being respectful of yourself and others...being a positive person with an outstanding attitude... being responsible for yourself and not only sympathetic, but empathetic of others. My child leaves his sessions and you can tell that not only has he had a great physical workout, but his attention and level of focus is improved. A great perk for busy families: your kids can go to any session appropriate for their age and ability... so, one week if you are busy on Wednesday, your "usual day" for example--you can go any time that week when that class is offered so you don't miss your class! If you go on vacation for a week and your child normally goes twice a week... go 4 times the week you come back! no phone call or arrangement necessary. I would definitely recommend 5150 Martial Arts to anyone who wants to instill confidence, self-discipline, and the skill to protect & defend themselves. It's a positive place where you truly feel at home.
I walked into the school not really sure of what I was getting into. I thought I'd try it and see how it went, as my original goal was just to lose weight. It all started with my first jab. I never realized I would love it so much! I love the class setting, where everyone learns together but at their own level and ability. Before I knew it, I was there for 1 year, going to classes a few times a week and advancing in belt rank. I am far more confident and fit than before. I found a new family at 5150, where all instructors push you to be your best, and where all classmates encourage you to keep going. I'm eternally grateful to be a part of this wonderful school.
5150 has become a home away from home for my whole family; from my 3-year old on up, we've all found a place we want to keep coming back. Of course, the reason I started going over two years ago was for the workouts, and those are vigorous and varied. We never have the same class twice, which is a big plus for me; I become easily bored with repetitive workouts. They are always fun but challenging, mentally as well as physically. I keep going (along with my whole family) for many more reasons, but the biggest reason is the great people there, both instructors and fellow classmates. They are what make it a home away from home from us. After Hurricane Sandy, the first people we turned to were our 5150 classmates and teachers, as our own extended family lives very far away. And our 5150 family came together and helped one another. It's really an amazing place.
I've been a student for about 7 months, and couldn't be happier with this program. Classes have just the right amount of challenge and change daily, so they are never boring. Aside from the physical benefits, I've gained confidence and self esteem I was lacking, thanks to the patience and motivation of the dedicated instructors, who are completely committed to helping me develop both mind and body. And an added bonus is the comradeship and support of my classmates! It really is a wonderful, healthy atmosphere, and I wish I had found this sooner.
My son has attended 5150 Jujitsu for almost a year up until last Thursday. My son was sparring with a partner, who got so upset with my son that he spewed a racist epithet towards my 10 year black son. I’ve had no problem with this school until this happened. Other parents were witnesses to the mistreatment of my 10 year old son. Myself and husband thought that Professor O’Keefe and Professor Irene would make this right being that one of there mission statements on there website states the following message below 👇🏽 “OUR KIDS GRACIE JIU JITSU CLASSES BUILD STRENGTH, CHARACTER, AND MORE Here children enjoy a fun and energetic program that builds strength, flexibly, endurance and character. The Kids Gracie Jiu Jitsu Program gives kids the confidence, self-discipline and leadership skills to excel at school, at home and in sports. Your child will be surrounded by caring, friendly, patient, and helpful instructors dedicated to helping your child achieve their fitness, and academic goals. Not only does our program focus on fitness, safety and self-defense, but it also provides them with a sate, positive, and respectful environment to learn new techniques and challenges.” Above are their words stated on their website. My son was mistreated by the very people who in their mission statement stated that this was a safe, respectful and caring environment. My son is devastated. My family and the parents that support my family are devastated! About how the school owners hasn’t acknowledged how dangerous this situation is not only for my son, but to any future kids that look like my son, could be in. It’s quite clear they’ve never had to deal with a touchy racist situation like this until now. And as I stated earlier, they’ve had time to do what is right, but they have chosen not to do anything at all. The kid that called my son n$gger, yes, my 10 year old son was called a n$gger by another student, still has the privilege to attend their school with no sort of ramification. If you are black and it’s very sad to state this, please do not send your child to this Jujitsu school. If you care about how children are treated do not send your child to this school. Below are their mission statements stated on the schools website. Wish they would’ve treated my son and my family this way. And please, Professor O’Keefe and Irene, your nonchalant concern is not warranted with myself and family should you even make a response.
