As a current level 2 Tai Chi student at 4 winds and someone with previous Kung Fu and Tai Chi experience I have to say that Sifu Bob's classes are extraordinary. Every class imparts some new insight that includes the martial application. He's very personable and patient, and the classes are affordable.
I took martial arts with Sifu Bob for a couple of years, starting right before the pandemic. The only reason I'm not there anymore is because I'm in another part of the state. Man, do I miss him and everyone else so much! He taught me so much in 2 years, even through virtual classes when it was needed. Not many instructors have the patience and knowledge to teach their students the way Sifu Bob did. He pushed me to challenge myself and helped me feel stronger and more empowered in my practice. I don't think I'll ever find another instructor like Sifu nor fellow classmates like those at 4 Winds.
I have been training at 4 Winds Martial Arts for over six years. Sifu (Instructor) Bob is simply incredible. He has been training students for many years. Whether you are brand new to Martial Arts, or have been training for years, Sifu Bob will get you to your next level. The techniques he teaches are simple and do not require a lot of athletic ability, so that anyone, anyone, can master them.
He has an incredible eye for the little details, and those little details are very, very important. He is also extremely patient and has an immeasurable amount of knowledge. I can't recommend 4 Winds highly enough. If you are considering joining a Martial Arts school in the Raleigh-Durham area or just want to check one out, you would be very wise to visit 4 Winds Martial Arts.
I trained at 4 Winds for several years before moving away, and I will always look back fondly on my time there. Sifu Bob is an incredible instructor, and the environment at 4 Winds is supportive and welcoming to everyone. I still value the self defense skills I learned along with the discipline and confidence I gained from my training.
I have been attending this school for 8 years now. Sifu Bob is an excellent teacher and extremely knowledgeable. I had never done any martial arts. Tai Chi has proven to be an excellent way for me to strengthen my legs and maintain balance. I love the class, my other classmates and my teacher !
I have been a student at 4 winds Martial Arts for 6 years now, studying Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong under Sifu Bob Melander. Sifu Bob is an excellent martial arts instructor, who shows deep personal interest in his student's success. He utilizes several different ways of teaching to match his students' learning style and maximize learning for both beginners and advanced students, regardless of age. I have especially enjoyed learning the self defense applications of Tai Chi Chuan.
Sifu Bob is absolutely enthusiastic about teaching and martial arts and he has vast knowledge, beyond the skills, of the deeper layers of true martial arts. He motivates and encourages his students to overcome mental blocks and grow in confidence and skill. I highly recommend 4 Winds Martial Arts and Sifu Bob for anyone who is looking for martial arts school to start training.

Over the past 30 years I have studied several martial arts, I have been training with Sifu Bob for over 4 years and could not ask for a better instructor or atmosphere. Sifu Bob’s teaching instructions, knowledge and understanding are great for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. Classes are well planned, effective and efficient. Sifu Bob makes a personal connection with each student and is very patient with all learning styles. It is a wonderful place for practical self defense, physical fitness and mind and body awareness. Sifu Bob is one of a kind, you will not meet a more caring and compassionate martial arts instructor anywhere.
4 Winds Martial Arts is a great place for anyone of any age or skill level to practice martial arts. Sifu Bob is a wonderful and detailed instructor that caters to everyone’s personal abilities. The members at 4 Winds are kind and welcoming and create a great environment to practice in.
Sifu Bob Melander is passionate and effective in his sharing of his deep martial arts knowledge. Do not hesitate to check out 4 Winds Martial Arts & Tai Chi.
Passionate about the martial arts! Not only teaches the art but the reasoning and subtleties of why, very interesting. Been with this group about a year now, loving it !
Shortly after moving to the Cary/Raleigh area about a year ago, I decided to give 4 Winds Martial Arts a try after getting a taste of a similar martial arts program in my previous town. 4 Winds has become one of my favorite things about living in this area! Sifu Bob (the owner/head instructor) has designed a great curriculum that steadily progresses and is always challenging yet doable with practice. I highly recommend it to anyone in the area, whether you are a novice (like me) or more experienced.
I have been with Sifu Bob Melander since 2017. I have studied several different martial arts and have varying levels. I got my 1st degree black belt in 2022. I have also attended and completed all 3 levels of Tai Chi and can teach that as well. I can't say enough about Sifu Bob as an instructor and mentor. His wisdom and knowledge in martial arts and Kajukenbo Tum Pai are incredible. Even though I have my 1st degree I learn something new everyday. Here it is not about contracts and money, it is about martial arts and learning. I was always a very aggressive Karate student (1st degree as well.) Through Kajukenbo Tum Pai, Tai Chi and Sifu Bob I am no longer aggressive and have learned that sometimes relaxation is what you need to be a warrior. It isn't about strength it's about technique.
