Great, friendly gym. with super knowledgeable instructors. A lot more attention to wrestling skills and leglocks than other gyms, which is really great.
I came in from Colorado and dropped in to a few classes they had incredible coaches and grapplers. Great community I hope to come back when I’m in town again!
Alex and the team at 10th planet Walnut Creek are great. We like that they have both JiuJitsu (no Gi) and striking classes. The other students are welcoming and supportive.
My son has trained Gi for 3 years and found the no Gi techniques easy to pick up with Alex’s instruction. They make it fun to learn and are able to describe techniques in ways that are relatable to those new to the sport.
You will get a great workout, learn a new skill, and develop mental fortitude. Also, parking is easy and the location is easy to get to.
Alex Canders has a wealth of coaching & competition experience that he delivers in an accesible way to students of all ages & skill levels. My experience at his academy was nothing short of amazing, and I will be sure to stop by again when I am in the area. If you are so fortunate to live nearby, join this school! 💯
Came here for a drop-in class while traveling for work. Like every 10th Planet gym, this is a friendly, ego-free environment, with good coaches and friendly students. Definitely check this place out if you're nearby, regardless of whether you're part of the 10pWO!
Man where do I start, Coach Alex is an amazing instructor!! My 5 year old son Jimmy has been going to 10th planet for about 9months now, and this being his 1st sport Coach Alex has shown nothing but patience’s and great teaching. I definitely recommend this gym to anyone looking for a family friendly gym for their child. Thank you to the whole 10th planet family especially Coach Alex
This place is amazing. My boys (8 and 9 years old) go here and I just started the adult classes. My oldest is on the spectrum and the instructor is very patient and engaging. They are extremely welcoming to people of all ages and skill levels.
Alex is great! He makes me feel welcomed at all times and is a great coach! He has been an instructor for over a decade and knows how to help day one students to elite competitors.
Amazing place to train! I was visiting for a week and Alex and the whole team were super welcoming. I‘ve learned a lot of new skills and it was fun to roll with the people there. will come back for sure.
Amazing place to Train. Aa a beginner coach Alex creates a safe and fun environment to learn. I knew almost nothing about the sport and everyone was super welcoming and has helped me grow in my BJJ journey. My kid also loved to train here. Alex makes class super fun and entertaining while teaching BJJ.
We have been going to 10th Planet for three years now. Great and safe environment for the children. We started in Tiny Tigers and now graduated to kids jiu-jitsu. Couldn't ask for a greater learning experience for our 7 year old.
What an amazing jiu jitsu studio. I was visiting from NYC (where I do Krav Maga and BJJ) and wanted a place to train. Initially I was going to head into the city but after doing a search I saw this gym closer to me and decided to attend. I've heard about 10th Planet previously but as with all gyms, you never know what to expect until you get there. And am I glad I went.
The head instructor, Alex, was gracious and welcoming right from the start. Everyone I did drills with was quite patient and very helpful (I've been training consistently for 7-8 months now). Even when we began to roll, each person I rolled with focused on technique and improving , and was very helpful. Not to mention the content of the class itself was extremely beneficial (I wrote down everything I could remember so I can go back and practice again).
Whether you're considering doing jiu jitsu or have been rolling for a while, this is definitely an academy to check out. I know whenever I come back to visit the Bay Area, this will be my go-to academy.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Walnut Creek is lucky to have such professional and high level instruction in Alex Canders, who is well known in the jiu jitsu scene. This means it is suitable for beginners as well. 10P is not my home school but I was warmly welcomed AND as a woman, felt comfortable with a room full of guys who were respectful, kind, and knowledgeable. The instruction was a little different that I am used to in that Alex walked everyone through step by step in real time, which I found highly effective for learning... I even tried the new move I learned on Wednesday in a tournament that Friday! Also, the class is dynamic and not the same everyday warm up, and Alex adds some humor as well, which is refreshing. Thanks again for the wonderful hospitality.
One of the best I know. Probably the best in the bay area. Everyone is super serious and committed to BJJ. At the same time very friendly and safe. You can also learn kickboxing here.
I highly recommend if you are interested in martial arts. You don't want to miss this one!
I've been training at 10th planet Walnut Creek for the last 4 months. Alex Canders is an incredible teacher, very detail oriented with very precise instruction. Alex as well as the other coaches Dom and Corbin make jiu jitsu easy to understand, and always make safety the highest priority. The gym has an awesome enviorment, everyone is friendly and willing to help you as you progress. It's truly a great place to train and I would recommend it to anyone.
I started training with Alex around 5 years ago and as of a month ago 2 of my boys are also training with him. I come to this gym because of his constant desire to teach and learn new things. Alex considers himself to always be learning and he passes that along to the students all the time. The adult classes are full of good guys and girls who are always safe and respectful. It's a rare thing to have an entire room of grapplers and there isn't a single person in the room that I don't trust to roll safely.
Been training here 6 months so far and I've developed a healthy respect for Coach Alex as an instructor and small-business owner. Here is a person who obviously cares passionately about his students, the martial art and the community we have here at the training center. I've met a lot of good people here who are respectful, eager to help you learn and just fun to be around. BJJ is a challenge and requires a lot of personal responsibility in the realms of attention, humility and the safety of you and your training partners, which is why I'm very grateful I found Coach Alex and this gym to help start me off on my journey.
Great no-gi BJJ and kickboxing school. Alex is a solid teacher who is technical while being easy going at the same time. I like how I can learn both the striking and ground game all at one school. I've found my go-to school going forward.
Alex has created a safe, friendly, well-matted (great jiu jitsu mats mean a lot!) environment in which to learn no gi Brazilian jiu jitsu. No gi is easier on your hands (gi style is heavily dependent on vise-like grips on the jiu jitsu uniform). 10th Planet is THE place to train if you want a lot of no gi classes, simply because gi academies don't usually offer many no gi classes. Alex's game is really complete - all the leg, ankle, heel, and toehold attacks and defenses you could ever ask for, plus all the upper body attacks and defenses, with equal emphasis guard work and guard passing. Finally, Alex has proven himself time and time again on the competition circuit - just Google his name. He is a Black Belt under Denny Prokopos, who is Eddie Bravo's first black belt, and Eddie Bravo is a black belt under Jean Jacque Machado.
Amazing instructor and just as amazing school environment! Very friendly and open to anyone that wants to start their jiu jitsu journey. Alex is spectacular with his attention to detail and his ability to break down a very difficult move into simple easy to follow steps.
Signed up for 6 months as I was in the house buying process out of state. I came in a few times during this process and everything was fine. I expected a months long process as anyone who has bought a house before should expect. But, I was able to buy a house in just a few weeks which is unheard of. Now im planning a move 2000 miles away and therefore wont be training there. I reach out to let Alex (head trainer) to inform him and he gets upset and questions my "intentions" and throws it in my face that a 6 month package is discounted and that I purposely signed up for 6 months knowing id find a house in weeks (every homeowner knows thats nonsense)....my intentions were simple, train until I move expecting it to take months. I even told Alex at training that I was looking for a house out of state. I explain this and he doesnt respond. Next day I see a charge for $180 on my card and no response still. Extremely unprofessional and wrong. Ill be going to the BBB.
Unsafe environment with bad apples that will hurt your children and have no concern for the people they are rolling with whatsoever. They do not play nice in the sandbox. I had to take my son to the emergency room. Be very careful with these people they seriously want to hurt you.
