Chemainus, a small town on Vancouver Island, is home to the South Island Open (SIO) series of South Island BJJ events. The SIO calendar includes the SIO Winter Classic, the SIO Grappling Challenge, the SIO Spring Classic and the South Island Open itself, along with junior events such as the SIO BC Junior Championship and the SIO Spring Junior Championship. A few SIO events have also been listed in Nanaimo and Victoria.
Most events offer both Gi and No-Gi divisions, and kids divisions are common, appearing at around two in five events. Absolute divisions are rare. SIO events use their own house rules and often run a round robin format, so check the rules before you register. Adult entry usually costs around C$70–C$120. November is the busiest month, with further events in the spring.
