Description
We are excited to release the brackets for our upcoming College Grappling Tournament, which will be happening on April 5th, at Fitzgerald Field House (3526 Allequippa St, Pittsburgh, PA 15219). Here are the divisions and the expected competitors in each division. We handpicked each division based on the signups to give everyone the most amount of matches in their brackets:
Beginner Divisions:
These divisions are for competitors who have less than 1 year of grappling experience, including BJJ, Judo, or wrestling.
- Under 145 lb
- Under 170 lb
- Over 170 lb
Intermediate:
These divisions are for competitors with 1-2 years of grappling experience, including BJJ, Judo, or wrestling.
- Under 145 lb
- Under 170 lb
- Over 170 lb
Advanced:
These divisions are for competitors with over 2+ years of grappling experience, including BJJ, Judo, or wrestling.
- Under 165 lb
- Over 165 lb
We also have an all skill, all weight, absolute women's division. This division is free at the moment.
Since the heavier divisions are sparser, beginner grapplers above 170 pounds are welcome to move up to the intermediate weight class to get more matches. Barring this exception, competitors should only sign up for the skill level which the organizers have placed them.
FORMAT:
We will be doing double elimination brackets for each group. All matches will be NOGI. The competitors in each bracket should be available on Smoothcomp, but the exact matchups will not be available until the day of the event.
SIGN UP:
Sign up for your division using Smoothcomp using this link to the tournament page. You will be charged 20 dollars. (https://smoothcomp.com/en/event/31446)
If you have not used Smoothcomp before, to sign up, click the dark blue "register" button on the top right. You will be prompted to provide some basic information, then prompted to choose your weight class. Choose whichever weight class you would like, given that you choose the correct skill level you have been assigned (beginner, intermediate, advanced).
DAY-OF INFO:
- Show up an hour before your match is set to start so you have time to weigh in and warm up.
- Bring your own food and drinks if you plan to rehydrate after your weigh-in. There will not be food available to purchase.
- Metered parking is available around Trees Hall (building across from Fitzgerald Field House).
WEIGH-INS:
- There will be a 1-pound allowance for weigh-ins.
- If you miss weight, you will be moved to the next division (you will compete in the next weight class up).
- Be sure to arrive early to allow time for the weigh-in process.
UNIFORM:
- Competitors will be required to wear a tight-fitting shirt or rash guard (no bare chests).
- Athletic shorts without pockets are preferred. Since many competitors do not own grappling shorts, we will be lenient. Competitors wearing athletic shorts with pockets may be asked to turn their shorts inside out.
- Competitors are allowed to wear spats but no other type of long pants.
- Competitors must compete in bare feet, without shoes or socks.
- Mouthguards are required to compete. If you do not have one yet, here is an affordable option: Mouthguard on Amazon
RULESET:
- The matches will be 5-minute matches that will either end by submission or points.
- We will be following the competition rules that are detailed here: Grappling Industries Rules
- Beginner/Intermediate: Due to the newer nature of competitors, beginner and intermediate divisions will only use allowed techniques for white belts. This means the following techniques are banned: No leglocks beyond straight ankle, no reaping, no kneebars, no toe holds, no calf/bicep slicers.
- Advanced division: Advanced division is the same ruleset as beginner/intermediate, with the exception of kneebars, reaping, and calf/bicep slicers being allowed. Due to advanced division including +2 year white belts, no other leg locks except the ones listed are allowed. This means NO HEEL HOOKS!
- The moves are banned for all divisions:
- No jumping submissions or guard.
- No Kani Basami (Scissor takedown)
- Major and minor fouls from Grappling Industries still apply.
- No banned submissions.
- No slamming.
- No pulling hair, striking, or other illegal moves.
SPECTATORS:
- Spectators are free to attend. Bring your friends and family to cheer you on!
