Tournament Format
- Bracket: 8 teams, Single Elimination
- Team slots are limited to 8 teams per division.
- Total combined weight of a 5 man team is 925 lbs
- 6 athlete roster (including substitute): 1110 lbs total combined weight
- No weight allowance
- Seeding: Based on the combined competition experience of the starting 5 athletes.
Quintet-Style Team Match Rules (5 vs 5)
- Matches are Sub Only 5 vs 5, winner-stays-in format.
- Individual matches are 4 minutes.
- Submission = winner stays in, 1 minute rest; losing team sends next athlete.
- If no submission in regulation time, both athletes are eliminated.
- A team wins by eliminating all five opponents.
- If the team match ends in a draw, each coach selects one athlete on the opposing team for EBI Overtime (6th man substitute may be selected.)
- 3 rounds of EBI OT determines the winning team.
- Substitution only allowed before a new round begins (in between quarter finals and semi finals)
- Once a sub enters, that lineup is locked for the rest of the event
Special "GET DOWN" Rule
GET DOWN RULE (Standard EBI Rule): If both athletes remain standing for 30 seconds without a takedown, the match will be paused and a coin flip will determine who chooses the position.
First Get Down: The winner of the coin flip chooses top or bottom Cocoon (bottom athlete seated with butterfly hooks and a body lock, top athlete has knees and hands on the mat).
All Future Get Downs: The match will restart in Mount position (top athlete in full mount, bottom athlete with feet on mat, arms crossed).
The match then continues from the selected position.
This rule is now a standard part of the EBI ruleset to keep matches moving and prevent extended stalling on the feet.
Lifting Rule
If the top athlete lifts the bottom athlete above knee height, the match will be stopped and reset on the feet.
Example: If a bottom athlete locks a triangle or closed guard but the top athlete stands and lifts them above knee height, the position will be reset.
This rule is for safety and acknowledges the potential of a slam. If the top athlete can lift their opponent, a slam is possible, so the match is reset instead. This also encourages the bottom athlete to control the position and avoid being lifted.
