Description
***Please note that we are aiming to ensure each person has 2 matches, but this is not guaranteed. It depends on the planned timing of the event. This might be done via bronze matches, consolation matches, creating an open class, or putting together exhibition matches.***
This tournament is intentionally designed as an introductory competition experience for white belts and blue belts!
Our goal is to help athletes:
- Experience the competition environment
- Learn how brackets, scoring, and match flow work
- Manage nerves and pacing
- Identify areas to improve before entering larger tournaments
This is a low-cost, low-pressure event that prioritizes development over medals, while still maintaining the structure and professionalism of a real tournament.
Who This Event Is For
- White and blue belt practitioners only
- First-time competitors
- Athletes preparing for IBJJF or regional competitions
- Anyone who wants competition-style rounds in a controlled setting
- Adults over 18 years of age
Not intended for:
- Blue belts or higher
- Experienced competitors looking for advanced divisions
Ruleset
- No Gi Jiu Jitsu
- White and blue belt ruleset (IBJJF-style scoring)
- No heel hooks
- No reaping
- Legal submissions consistent with white and blue belt standards
Exact match length and bracket format will be finalized based on registrations, but plan on 5-minute matches.
Please note that this tournament is run purely by volunteers and is intended to benefit jiu jitsu practitioners who are in early in their BJJ journey. The registration cost was intentionally kept low so that individuals would have the opportunity to practice competing, and get a feel for what competition-level rounds are like. Given the lower cost of entry, and volunteer nature of the event, please give the organizers some grace throughout the event as this will not be run as formally as a large-scale jiu jitsu promotion where you're paying $80-$200 to compete.
Format
- Bracket-style matches, 2 matches planned for each athlete (2nd match will be based on if there's enough time in the event, and likely open-class style or exhibition matches)
- Weight classes may be combined if necessary
- Athletes may receive multiple matches depending on bracket size
This is a learning-focused event, not a points race or ranking competition.
