Description
This event is all about mat time, fun, and building experience. We will follow a round-robin, submission only format and guarantee each athlete a minimum of two matches. Please note that ages 7 and under will follow the traditional IBJJF points system to allow for a positive experience for all competitors.
Location: 10542 106 st (Bairro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)
Start time: 9:00 am
Format and Rules
Match duration:
Age 4: 2 minutes (Traditional points)
Age 5-7: 3 minutes (Traditional points)
Ages 8-14: 4 minutes (Sub only)
Ages 15+: 5 minutes
Tiebreakers:
In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided at the referee's desecration based on which athlete was the most dominant, offensive, and had the most submission attempts. A submission attempt will only be considered if it puts the other athlete in danger or illicits a meaningful reaction.
Legal techniques:
The following are illegal at all levels: Eye-gouging, biting, kicking, punching, slapping, hair-pulling, fish-hooking, spinal attacks, jumping guard, slamming, heel hooks, reaping of the leg
Ages 4-14 (legal moves): Arm bars, Americanas, Kimuras, triangles, RNC, Lapel chokes
Ages 15+: All other submissions allowed
Uniform:
Gis must be in good condition and fit properly according to IBJJF uniform standards. Athletes must wear a belt colour according to their rank.
Winning a match:
- Physical tapping – If the defeated player taps the mat or the other competitor with their hands or feet, that is considered a submission.
- Verbally tapping – If a competitor verbally says they are defeated (verbally saying tap, crying out in pain, etc.).
- Unconsciousness – If a competitor falls unconscious during the fight due to a chokehold or by other means.
- Referee’s digression – If a referee sees that one competitor is likely to be seriously injured during a submission hold, they can stop the match and award the win (ages 4-15).
- Ref’s decision – If the score remains 0-0 at the end of the match, the referee will choose a winner based on positional dominance, offensiveness, and submission attempts throughout the match.
As a general rule, we will avoid disqualifying an athlete. However, for the safety of the participants, the following may result in disqualification at the ref’s discretion:
- Blatant disregard of the illegal moves and techniques (especially after a warning).
- Blatant disrespect of other competitors or refs.
- Slams – If a player attempts to slam their opponent into the ground, to either break a submission or open the guard, then that is an immediate DQ.
While the following would possibly result in disqualification or penalty under most competition rules, to keep in the spirit of learning, a ref is encouraged to provide a thorough warning instead in these circumstances:
- Fleeing – If a competitor flees the bounds of the matted area, either to avoid a sweep, takedown, or submission attempt.
- Not engaging – If a player avoids the match by sitting down and not engaging, running circles, or simply not treating the match seriously.
- Illegal grips – If a player is seen inserting their fingers inside the sleeve of the trouser leg to control their opponent.
- Taking a rest – If a player takes off their jacket, takes too long to tie their belt, or does anything to intentionally stall to take a breather.
- Stalling – If either player is stalling (not pushing the action on, hanging out in side control, not advancing to a better position).
- Reaping – If an athlete is seen reaping the knee of an opponent, by either moving into position or moving their opponent into an illegal position.
- Illegal submission – If a submission is attacked which is deemed illegal for their level, the ref should step in and provide a warning. The ref may choose to reset the match from standing.
