Welcome to Alavanca Shawnessys Alberta Grappling Open!
This is a BJJ- Gi tournament open to competitors ages 5 and up! This event brings together athletes of all experience levels for a full day of exciting competition, sportsmanship, and community.
We’re proud to feature cash prizes for these Absolute Divisions:
• Men’s Absolute Champion: $500.

ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES — ALL DIVISIONS
• Slamming out of submissions• Striking of any kind• Small joint manipulation (fingers/toes)• Eye gouging, fish hooking, hair pulling• Biting or scratching• Spiking opponent on head/neck• Heel hooks (gi tournament rule)• Twisting leg locks for kids

How are the absolute divisions structured?
Each listed absolute division is one elimination bracket with all belt levels and all weights.
What techniques are illegal in all divisions?
Illegal techniques include slamming out of submissions, striking, small joint manipulation, eye gouging, fish hooking, hair pulling, biting or scratching, spiking an opponent on the head or neck, heel hooks, twisting leg locks for kids, spine manipulations such as twisters, scissor takedowns, can openers, and unsportsmanlike conduct.
What adult Gi leg lock rules are listed?
White belt adults may use straight ankle locks and knee bars, but not heel hooks, toe holds, reaping, or calf slicers. Colored belt adults may use straight ankle locks, knee bars, toe holds, and calf slicers, but not heel hooks or reaping.
What submissions are allowed for ages 5–6?
Ages 5–6 may use rear naked chokes with no neck cranks, armbars from guard or mount, Americana, and Kimura. Triangles, all leg locks, guillotines, and Ezekiel or loop chokes are not allowed.
What submissions are allowed for ages 7–12?
Ages 7–12 may use rear naked chokes, guillotines with no crank, triangle chokes, armbars, Kimura, Americana, and Ezekiel or loop chokes. All leg locks, wrist locks, and bicep slicers are not allowed.
What submission rules are listed for youth ages 13–15?
Youth ages 13–15 may use all basic chokes, arm locks and shoulder locks, and straight ankle locks as optional. Heel hooks, toe holds, knee bars, calf slicers, twisters, and neck cranks are not allowed.
