5/5 stars – the atmosphere at Calvert MMA Academy - Lineage BJJ / Gracie Jiu‑Jitsu is fantastic. The training space feels welcoming and clean, and the instructors create a supportive environment that makes you want to keep coming back. Whether you are looking for BJJ schools or just a friendly place to try martial arts classes near me, the vibe here is top notch. I especially appreciate how positive and respectful everyone is, which makes learning new techniques enjoyable. Great value and a place I would recommend to anyone.

We enrolled our son in the beginning of summer 2024. Immediately impressed with Coach Jack’s patience with the abundance of kids enrolled in the classes, memorizing each child’s name and making sure they all feel seen and are getting the help and encouragement they need each and every class. We loved it so much that now both of us parents have joined our son on both the practice mats and competition mats. Instructions are clear and concise, Coach Jack and other volunteer coaches are super attentive and helpful. Competition days boast a great gym family atmosphere where everyone supports and cheers on one another.

From the moment I arrived I was greeted by friendly staff and the instructors immediately made me feel welcome. Their knowledge and patience stood out; they break down each technique clearly and always offer personal feedback. The classes are well organized, whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve BJJ skills, and the training feels safe and supportive. I especially appreciate the emphasis on self defense and the respectful atmosphere. I highly recommend Calvert MMA Academy for anyone seeking great instruction and a positive training environment.

My sons have been attending Calvert MMA Academy for a couple of months now and we have seen a significant improvement in their confidence and attitudes. It has truly been a great experience for our boys and for our family. We truly love the instructors and their intentions to provide a fun, but educational experience during the classes. And of course we love seeing Kim every time we come!

Great gym and great people! Was in town on very short business trip and asked if I could swing by and train. One of the instructors, Jack, greeted me as soon as I walked in and was really great at talking through the techniques and working one on one with the students to work out the finer details. My training partners treated me like I was part of the team and expressed concern when they noticed I was nursing an old shoulder injury. Without prompting they even adjusted their pressure to accommodate it. I doubt I'll ever be in the area again but if am I will definitely be swinging by for another visit. Thanks to all the instructors and students!!

Our whole family trains at Calvert MMA and takes classes together, we have been there since last winter and signed up for another year. I was nervous about doing it but my teen daughter wanted me to do it with her and we have a blast. We aren't looking to compete just to feel safer - and it has definitely improved our confidence. My teen son and husband take the advanced classes as well and Shawn always takes the time to answer my son's questions and teaches thoroughly. Fran realized my daughter wasn't always comfortable and always takes the time to help. All of the instructors are great!

It's an ideal spot for anyone looking to learn self-defense or compete.

Calvert MMA Academy is for everyone! I was looking for something new and outside of my comfort zone, so I did the 2-week trial. Halfway through I knew this was going to be a long-term commitment for me. The instructors are helpful, encouraging, and motivating. The members are supportive and a great group to be around. I’ve learned self-defense moves, built my confidence, and made some amazing new friends. Give it a try, you will love it!

I called in and asked to drop in for a class on Aug 26. (Traveling through town) I was greeted with a warm welcome on the phone and when I arrived. I filled out the appropriate paperwork and ready to do some work. I arrived early and the coaches were helping the kids class and doing a great job. After the children's class I had a warm welcome on the mats by everyone. The professor was very professional and taught relevant defense techniques and things to keep in mind when doing so out in the streets. Open mat was a great time too. Everyone was respectful and had a great attitude. The atmosphere and the team made me feel welcomed and I highly suggest this academy to anyone long term or passing through. Thank you for the opportunity to train!

Both my kids started training at Calvert MMA last year with the little sharks program. Jim, Seth and all the coaches are top notch and do a great job of teaching self defense/bully prevention while still making it fun and engaging. This past spring I started attending the adult jiu jitsu classes and have gained a great deal of knowledge and confidence in just a few short months. The facility is well kept and clean and the people are all inviting and eager to learn and help one another out. Would highly recommend!

I started jiu-jitsu at Calvert MMA recently. Was a little hesitant as I have had like 5 days of experience prior to this, only knew two people that went there, and just wasn't sure how I'd fit in or if I would even understand what to do. Let me just say, those hesitations went to the wayside around the end of week 2. The staff and members there made me feel extremely welcomed and classes were fun, but most importantly, the instruction was top notch. The way the moves are explained and demonstrated are easy to follow/understand. They show it multiple times and give variations based on injury/size/etc. For me, I'm short, so I can't do some moves as well as a taller person. But with the variations provided, I can do the movement. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone as their instructors are top notch, crazy knowledgeable, and ensure that everyone gets the concept prior to moving on. The amount of progress I've made so far under their instruction is amazing. If you're thinking of joining, but aren't sure if this is the place for you, I guarantee it is. Just do it.

Getting back on the mats after not training for over 10 years, now older, stiff, overweight and out of shape. Joining Lineage Gracie BJJ in Calvert was an easy decision. Great instructors and fantastic teammates. Everyone treats each other like family. Asking for help learning techniques, looking for someone to practice with has been enjoyable and educational. There is not a UFC / MMA Fight Club, this is a place for learning, improving and bettering yourself. I am 45 years old. There are students of all ages here. Everyone is welcome with open arms and friendly faces. No regrets!!

My nine year old started out in the anti-bullying class (Jr Grapplers) and progressed into competition team. He loves it and goes at least twice a week. The instructors are fantastic, they really take the time to watch the kids and correct their mistakes. Not a lot of down time, either, the kids are constantly moving. The focus is on control and safe maneuvering- it’s been great for my kiddo! May seem pricey at first but totally worth it for what you’re getting.

Calvert MAA provides effective, old school Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a valuable combination of self defense and competitive training. Due to work, I’ve had the opportunity to train at BJJ facilities throughout the country. While most gyms have their benefits, I can say without question that Calvert MMA maintains the most detailed instruction from professional and seasoned Professors. The curriculum is logical with time spent on both the founding principles of BJJ and new techniques alike. Much effort is spent to ensure that techniques are understood by all students. Furthermore, there are few gyms that offer as many class times as Calvert MMA both in the morning and the evening. With the desire, students have the ability to train almost everyday. Great care is taken to ensure the facilities are cleaned. This gym might be the cleanest place in Maryland. Lastly, my daughter was enrolled in the youth training program. I was very pleased with the training plan and with what she learned. The instructors for the youth training program show great interest in the progression of the students. Calvert MMA is worth the investment.

Calvert MMA Academy has some of the hardest working men and women. Just from experience I've seen first hand how welcoming they are, their constantly helping everyone out, but in a certain way that's very genuine. I can see that their main focus is to teach what they do and to educate their students but at the same time they make sure it's a very safe, clean, and welcoming place to be in. But it goes way beyond just training. They put in the time to help show you something one on one if need be, and they will work with you if you aren't understanding a particular concept or if one needs guidance. Everyone who goes their you'll see it's not like any other class, it's a family, the people who go here are amazing men and women who care for one another and everyone is there for the same goal, to get educated, to grow, to build confidence, and to get stronger. 10/10 Recommended

I'm a visiting purple belt. I had a great experience training with these guys! Everyone was very friendly, welcoming and professional! I informed the professor that I had recently suffered a knee injury and he let me train at my own pace. Great technical instruction. The professor was very involved in the class going around and checking and adjusting, making sure everyone understood the technique. When rolling after class all the guys, including the professor, were careful with my knee and practiced a lot of restraint. All the guys were very relaxed, welcoming and down to earth. I would recommend this gym to anyone. Definitely a great atmosphere for families! I saw a little of the kids classes and all the kids looked like there were having fun and learning a lot. I've been a coach before and it's not easy to have a class that size be as fun and as interactive as they made it. Phenomenal!

We were initially torn between jui-jitsu and taekwondo, both offered in close proximity and both having their own benefits - we tried both for several weeks, Calvert MAA won hands down. After several months with all three kids enrolled, we could not be happier with their jui-jitsu program. The simple difference between the two disciplines is the self defense aspect that is taught in each class and in difference ways. Each class our kids have learned a technique that empowers them to be in control of a physical altercation (other kids, their siblings, even adults). The instructors are outstanding - while they teach self defense, they require disciple and respect from the kids. Our kids need that and as parents, we really appreciate it. The facility is clean and check in for the class is through an app.... couldn't get any easier! I could go on but I think I've covered it and I'm sure your tired of reading. You get the point, we absolutely love it!

Calvert MMA and Lineage BJJ in St. Mary’s are the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools you can find in SOMD. My son and I joined about three years ago. I practiced karate for many years and, being 60 years old, I had some apprehension at the beginning. None of that mattered. The instructors are outstanding at teaching BJJ and they want you to love the art. The training environment is safe, you learn at your own pace, the senior belts are very respectful and helpful and the facilities are kept clean. One special and unique aspect is the “Lineage”. This school is directly connected to the Gracie family and you will be learning BJJ from the source. Try it - I promise you will be hooked on the art, the instructors and the BJJ family.

Update: I am now about a year and a half into my membership at Calvert MMA and I couldn’t have made a better decision to train here. Everything I said before still stands but I can’t recommend them enough for the intangible difference you will see. I came in out of shape and overweight and I have lost weight and my body is in better shape than before. I have learned so much in my time here and made many friends along the way. Thanks to everyone here for making me feel like part of the team. Started with a trial membership a couple weeks ago with no prior martial arts experience. The instructors are top notch and work hard to teach everything in a safe and effective manner. I felt like a fish out of water when I first came in but the group is very welcoming and everyone helps each other out. It is a great team environment. I would recommend Calvert MMA to anyone. I was invited to attend a class at the Lineage BJJ Academy, by Professor Manalansan. From the moment I entered the building, I was was greeted and felt accepted by the students; even, while wearing patches from another academy. The instruction was taught in an easily understood manner and unlike a lot of other academies, questions were allowed to be asked, until everyone had a full understanding of the technique. Once we began to roll (spare), it seemed fluid, no one seemed to over do it, and kept safety in mind. I felt really comfortable within the Academy. I recommend any one who live close by and is thinking of a good place to study Gracie Jiu Jitsu, this is the place. If I did not have an 1.5hr drive, this would be my home for BJJ.

I attended the fundamentals class as well as a no gi class and I couldn't have made a better choice. I am currently on vacation in Maryland and wanted to get some training in while I was here and I contacted Jim. He invited me in for the two classes and I'm glad I came in. The facility is absolutely clean and the class size was perfect. The professor to student ratio was ideal. There was great instruction with a good amount of one on one instruction if needed. I felt very welcome from the others in the gym and I will gladly come back when I am in the area. A great experience all around!

If you're in the area, Calvert MMA is school you MUST visit and try out. Not only are all of the instructors excellent, but they are genuinely nice people that have worked to cultivate a warm, welcoming, and fun environment for anybody to train in. This academy truly embraces the common saying "leave your ego at the door," and even as a visitor I've never felt as welcome at another school as I have here. I absolutely recommend stopping by to experience it for yourself.

My experience at this academy was very positive. The atmosphere is very friendly and not intimidating. Facilities are very clean. Camaraderie was awesome. The level of expertise from the instructors is top notch. They always address all your questions while maintaining a challenging but not overwhelming curriculum. Unfortunately, due to my military duties, I have to move out of the area; otherwise, I would have stayed here forever. Highly recommend them!!!!

I have been training at Calvert MMA now for over a year, and I definitely chose the right gym. All of their classes, both kids and adults, tend to make full use of the large mat space. I also travel very often for work, and try to train in every city/country that I visit(over 30 gyms in 2018). Not all gyms have clean mats, big classes, or instruction that focuses on the details. Calvert does, so thanks for that.

My son and I have been training here since spring 2018, and I can’t say enough good things about Calvert MMA. The instructors are excellent at presenting the techniques in such a way that all ages and skill levels benefit. The kids classes engage the children physically, providing them with exercise and valuable defense skills, but in a fun and safe environment. For adults, both the instructors and members are welcoming and open. The focus is on working together to learn and develop. I would encourage everyone, regardless of age or prior experience, to come in and see what Calvert MMA is about.

Calver MMA is great! The instructors are friendly and patient. They take time to explain and demonstrate the techniques. And then monitor the students as they implement them, ensuring proper form. My son really enjoys going to class. We've tried other martial arts, and this by far has been our best experience.

Calvert MMA is an all-around great place to train. The cleanliness of the gym is astounding and the quality of jiu-jitsu taught here is superb. Whether you have no experience at all or you come with prior experience, the staff and training partners make you feel welcome and at home. I highly recommend Calvert MMA if you are looking to learn jiu-jitsu or self defense, get in shape and gain some confidence!

UPDATE 11/2018 - My daughter had an awesome experience training with Grand Master Relson Gracie at Calvert MMA. The depth of knowledge and philosophy of self defense is incredible. Thanks to Coach Jim and the Relson Gracie Team for making this a positive environment for kids and adults. My daughter G. had been asking to do martial arts for quite some time. My husband looked for a gym focused on self defense and "no bullying" rather than learning to fight. He came across Calvert MMA and we decided to take the trial class. G. loved it! And we did too! The focus on self defense, the coaches, and the facility all made the experience worth the enrollment. Little did we know, it was going to get even better. After a month of classes, she was very excited to meet and to learn from one of the greatest Jiu Jitsu experts ever, Grandmaster Relson Gracie! He visits/coaches at Calvert MMA a few times a year. The students and coaches have the opportunity to learn from him. How great is that! G., being half Brazilian, put her Brazilian shirt under her gi and was ready for a great experience. Relson was very kind to all of the students; took pictures and signed everyone's gi/belt! He also is the one who awards the degree and belt promotions to the athletes. G. is now looking forward to the next visit when she may get her first degree promotion too! Thank you Calvert MMA and Grandmaster Relson Gracie for teaching children to become better people with strong character.

This school is a family based environment. As a female participant, the guys treat you with respect and you are part of the team. The instructors are top notch! The classes are built for all levels, beginners through advanced students. I've been to other schools where they just try to push to see how "tough" you are. Calvert MMA does not operate that way. They balance the necessity to train hard with safety and emphasis on technique. Each individual is given the opportunity to train at whatever level they are comfortable with. Safety is paramount. Additionally, the instructors will curb the purpose of the training to whatever you want...fitness, self defense, employment purposes or just to improve your self confidence.

I've been to gyms all over and am so impressed with this school. The owner, Jim Thrift, has extensive experience within martial arts as well as law enforcement, as do all the instructors. Whether you are looking to learn how to defend yourself or develop your BJJ/Muay Thai skills and become a viable competitor, this gym will ensure you achieve your goals.

I started at Calvert mma a few months ago and it's almost unbelievable how much the instructors here are willing to help you and troubleshoot your game. You can tell right away how much passion they have for the sport by the detail in every move and position in class. Day in and day out you see the instructors coming in early, staying late, working, always trying to find ways to improve the instruction and help their students reach their goals. Regardless of the reason people train, everyone is here to help one another and treat you like family as soon as you walk in the door. If you choose to compete, there is always from the school in your corner coaching. I look forward to my time there every week, and there's no better feeling in the world than the results you see.. strength, cardio improvement, and becoming a part of the great group of people we have here.

Calvert MMA is a great jujitsu Academy. Fantastic instructors meet the needs of both beginner and advanced jujitsu students. If you are brand new to jujitsu do not hesitate to come in and give it a try you’ll be glad you did. Beginners will find a Laid-back welcoming atmosphere where the emphasis is on sound technique. More advanced jujitsu practitioners will find opportunities to roll/ train at higher levels of intensity. I have been training here for a little over a year and I highly recommend it.

Calvert MMA is a great place to learn. Jim Thrift and his instructors have created an environment where anyone from any level can fit right in. Each class I have attended includes a good mix of students from a variety of backgrounds, including LE, military and civilian. Emphasis is placed on proper form, ensuring that every student understands the fundamentals. Calvert MMA has classes ranging from formal Jiu Jitsu training to less formal self-defense techniques, and one can join any class at any time. I highly recommend Calvert MMA!

I have been training here since October 2017. The instructors are amazing and the attention to detail is really emphasised. The great attitude of the instructors is mirrored by the students, making it a great place to be. It's nice to have such an outstanding place to train in Southern Maryland.
