I was recommended this gym by a friend of mine, and I am so glad that he did. I had no prior experience in jiu jitsu or anything of the sort, but coming in I still felt welcomed and was able to get a great workout in. Professor Jordan is great at explaining techniques and going through each one thoroughly. No better place to finally make that dive into the world of Jiu Jitsu

This studio is a hidden gem! We absolutely love Grassroots. My husband attends the adult classes and 3/4 of my kids attend the youth classes. It is worth every cent. My husband comments that he is more flexible (the man can’t touch his toes, so this is significant) and has increased strength, and my kids love learning their new skills. I also feel it helps one of my children with their ADHD. It really helps him focus and I see him use this skill outside of class. Jordan, the owner/instructor, might be the most patient person I have ever met. He can effectively teach a mat-ful of children and command their attention without ever raising his voice. The kids love learning from him! An added bonus that keeps my kids excited are the constant bonuses like a Halloween party, babysitting nights, belt promotion ceremonies, etc. Could not recommend Grassroots more!

So glad I brought my son here. He absolutely loves this new journey, not to mention the new friendships he’s established with the other kids. I have also rediscovered my passion for this art. It is without a doubt the best decision we have made together.

Grass Roots is the best. Hands down. Jordan is a great teacher and has the patience of a saint. The sense of community is next to none and it is bully/ego free. My son is somewhat new and he looks forward to going to all three classes offered during the week (M,W,F). I can already see his confidence growing. I highly recommend it!

Great place to learn BJJ and improve fitness. The culture/atmosphere of the whole gym is easily my favorite part. Anyone on the Southside looking to start a martial art should definitely support this local business!

I recently took classes at this studio, and I can't recommend it enough. The instructor is incredibly calm and patient, taking the time to thoroughly demonstrate each move, which really enhances the learning experience. The studio itself is spotless, creating a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. I particularly appreciated the small class sizes, allowing for plenty of one-on-one interaction and personalized attention. It's a great environment for beginners and experienced students alike. Plus, the fact that they provide the Gi is a huge plus—it takes away the hassle of having to invest in gear right away. Another standout feature is their flexibility with scheduling. They truly accommodate your needs, making it easy to fit classes into a busy lifestyle. Overall, this studio offers an excellent combination of skilled instruction, a clean and friendly environment, and flexibility that makes it a top choice for anyone looking to train.

I had been out of the game for about 15 years. Always missed it. Always wanted to go back to it. However, I needed to find the right place. And this is it. Someplace with quality instruction and a good culture. First, the Ju Jitsu is sound. Professor Jordan is a top quality instructor. Why? Sure, he has the knowledge base. But what makes him really good is that: 1.) he takes the time to explain things and respond to questions concisely 2.) he's never defensive, 3.) he notices different details from each student and offers feedback 4.) he encourages all of his students at all levels. Second, the culture of the school is one where I would enroll my sons. My confidence in him and the school does not get higher than that. I don't know what more to say about it. In short, the people at the school want to get better at the game and be better people. I can't think of a better place to do it. Keep up the good work Professor Jordan!

My 10 y/o son started with Jordan I believe 2 weeks ago. He’s picking things up quickly. Jordan is patient, kind but firm with the students when they get distracted and start getting off task. He gives them a few mins free time at the end to goof off too. He also reminds my son to be respectful of me when he’s not always, which I greatly appreciate someone else telling him he needs to respect me. I’m happy we ended up with Jordan as my son’s instructor!

Professor Jordan emphasizes the importance of winning/gaining control from various compromised positions you may find yourself in during competition or street encounters. These escapes and accompanying maneuvers are essential building blocks which Professor Jordan demonstrates step-by-step. What has me most excited are the following offensive tactics that create windows of opportunity for submissions. Since joining Grassroots I've pushed my comfort zone, gone through phenomenal workouts, grown my confidence, and met down-to-earth people.

New member here. I’ve kept my eye on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu the last few years and finally decided to give it a go. After being indoctrinated into the art by a friend at another dojo, I was referred to Grassroots and Professor Jordan. This is a new dojo and I’m thoroughly enjoying the small class format while I’m still learning the basics. Professor Jordan has made a very impressive and clean facility, which matches his teaching style. His love for the art and sport really shines through when he teaches and how he applies it to relevant situations and professions. I can’t wait to go back for some more!

Jordan is an awesome instructor, very knowledgeable of jiu jitsu and he does a great job of explaining different techniques for those that are beginners. He is located in a nice spot on the south side of Chicago.

Its good being back on the mat! Professor Jordan is amazing. I love the way he breaks down and drills each technique. I also like how he teaches different variations to the technique. Professor Jordan is very humble and I can tell he is invested in teaching and growing each student.

Professor Jordan is a highly skilled and knowledgeable BJJ Practitioner and Fitness Instructor. I've known him for over 5 years as a student of Uflacker Academy in Chicago. I am currently taking private lessons to improve my fitness & BJJ game. He uses and applies BJJ specific exercises to improve form and function, and explains and demonstrates each move. I've gotten a great workout each visit and I am very happy to recommend Grassroots BJJ and Fitness!
