My 7 year old son has been going for about 3 months now. He has a ton of fun, the instructors know exactly what they are doing and run a tight ship. The main instructor Bryce has found his calling, creating a welcoming environment and teaching life long lessons. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could.

If you want a quality place to train and learn different skills Black Lion is the place to be. Excellent instructors Justin and Chad will always take care of you and are obsessed with developing your skills and knowledge everyday your there. I was very hesitant starting BJJ but after the first class my mind changed and I was hooked and have been taken care of the whole time. Don’t think twice about going anywhere else than this gym! Black Lion is the place to be simple as that.

Great instruction and great team mates. I switched from another gym and I am much happier here. Last gym was all competition which was not for me. Black Lion offers a great experience for competition as well as for an enthusiast.

I took private lessons with Chad at Black Lion twice a week for four weeks to gain some self defense skills for an international trip. I did not have any Jiu Jitsu experience and he explained and demonstrated concepts in a way I could understand and made me excited about learning! I also always felt very safe and comfortable taking lessons with Chad because he always explained what and why we were practicing a particular technique and consistently checked in to make sure I felt comfortable. He also brought in other staff or gym members to help me practice, and encouraged practicing at home by writing down moves to remember. Chad’s techniques for teaching were fantastic and I felt well prepared leaving his lessons. Definitely check out Black Lion!

This is the best place to train in Grand Rapids. I have tried other gyms and settled on Black Lion. Chad and Justin are stellar coaches. The mat space is big and always clean. Best of all, all of the members who roll at BL are fantastic training partners and good good people. I highly recommend anyone who is considering BJJ train at BL.

Great environment, very friendly and helpful staff and members. Would highly recommend for kids to gain self-confidence and respect for others, all while learning to defend themselves with a great martial art. Great environment for adults to learn without a lot of pressure on newbies. They take the time to explain not only moves, but the reasons behind them, and are more than willing to answer any questions. They have made me and my family feel very welcome. Very highly recommended.

I cannot say enough great things about Chad and the Black Lion family. I took my son to the gym a few years ago and was amazed at how well the instruction was, that I wanted to try myself. Neither my son or myself had ever participated in a martial art. Chad and the rest of the instructors made the process comfortable, encouraging, and always positive. There is very few things that I have ever done that were so physically and mentally challenging. It has helped boost both the confidence of my son as well as myself. I have found the reward in the challenge of constantly learning and pushing myself to be better. The gym is clean and well kept and I couldn't be happier with the decision to walk through the doors and take the first steps. If you are looking for great instruction and a supportive atmosphere, look no further. The Black Lion is the place for you!

After a horrible experience at a different gym I was scared to try jiujitsu again. My first day at Black Lion I sat in my car and thought of all the reasons why I should just quit. I'm glad I didn't. From the second I walked in I felt welcome. I'm a smaller sized white belt female and I feel safe here. All of the coaches are professional, caring, patient, and excellent teachers. Every single person makes you feel like you belong and there is no ego at all. The mats are mopped after every class and the gym itself is very clean. I've only been here a few months and love it here, I feel like I have learned so much already! If you're on the fence about jiujitsu or nervous to try it out, this is the place to be ❤️

🤙Updated Review🤙 Black Lion has continued to grow since I first joined the family a couple years ago. Our training facility has nearly doubled in size, having knocked down a wall to an adjacent suite. The increased mat space has continued to welcome increasing membership and class opportunities. Currently, there are a wealth of classes and training opportunities available. M-W offers morning and evening no-gi classes, followed by striking. T-Th offers 6a, 9a, 6p classes, with an additional 7p colored belt adult class. There are also classes at 1p on Wednesday (no-gi) and 1p on Thursday (gi). Kids classes run 4:30-5:15p (ypunger kids), then 5:15-6p (the older kids). There are also open mat times on Friday morning and evening, a competition class on Saturday morning, and drill class on Sundays starting at 10a. Women only classes are starting up on Saturday mornings and some Law Enforcement only classes are hosted here as well. In addition to all that, seminars are not uncommon every couple months. If you are looking for a professional, clean and hospitable training facility, stop by and give it a look. Our gym cannot be beat. No other facility offers as many classes with a diversity of coaches to meet your training needs.

Cannot say enough good things. I have been a part of Black Lion for about 4 years now. This gym makes me feel comfortable to train here, which is most important to me. As a woman, that means so much because of my past experiences. I have been given a voice through this art because of the professionalism of the owner (Chad) and the other instructors. Black Lion is a great gym with great people and has a welcoming, safe and clean environment. I’m so glad to have found a home here. The owner, Chad, and all instructors are professional, knowledgeable and patient. There are classes for beginners, as well as for upper belts who want to be challenged. The option to compete is welcomed but not required. There is BJJ everyday and lots of times to come in and roll either gi or no gi. On top of that the location is convenient and prices are the most affordable in the area. I’ve only done the BJJ classes, but there are lots of other striking classes offered as well.

I wouldn’t choose another academy to attend. Not only is the owner helpful, but he trusts his colored belts to teach and help the lower ranking students. Competitive, fun, fair-priced, and family oriented. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies though, there are some stone cold practitioners who truly want to be the best. Lastly, don’t forget that everyone starts with a clean slate. Oss

Really great place. I'm starting as an old, out of shape guy, but the people there could not be more welcoming and helpful. The instruction level is high, and I love that injury prevention is a high priority. Black Lion is also affiliated with Kroyler Gracie who grew up training with his grandfather Helio Gracie. Helio and his brothers founded the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That's pretty impressive lineage. I'd definitely tell you to give Black Lion a try if you're interested in the sport. There's a reason that students from all over West Michigan drive to Black Lion specifically for their training.

Chad and Jess are always there to help you learn, and push you to meet the goals you set for yourself! I've been to a few gyms in the area, and here, I have found the most honest men and women who create a family atmosphere that is welcoming, tolerant, and understanding. Talents range from just new to the sport, to extremely experienced. You get an amazing mix of that here as you have some competitors trying to make grand stages, and hobbyists who just want to roll. Get in shape/improve your fitness and learn a valuable skill in the process. If you’re trying to get in shape but need a purpose, this is the gym for you. If you fancy yourself already in shape but want to make your fitness correlate to something real, like defending yourself, this is the gym for you. I can’t say enough good things about Black Lion. The people are great, the training is amazing. Chad, Justin, Morgan, and all the higher belts will take the time to go above and beyond. The most important thing is to show a little discipline and keep showing up. You do that and, I promise, you’ll thank yourself.

Great atmosphere, and accepting of everyone. Love the ability to come to any class you want and learn something. Come one class a week. Come 7 classes a week. It's all the same payment. No less than 3 MMA fighters make it their home, including one Light Heavyweight champion. Great place to learn or to train Brazillian Jiu Jistu in Gi or no/Gi. The gym has brand-new wall-to-wall mats which are cleaned daily. The training environment is one in which you are partners rather than opponents fostered by the notion that nobody ever got better at Jiu Jitsu by themselves. Women's and kids classes are available as well. Training partners are helpful and plentiful. I have attended for a year now and would highly recommend it to anyone.

I wasn't sure what to think going into it because most martial arts studios I've been to everyone has a chip on their shoulder, but it was the complete opposite here. Everyone is so nice and welcoming, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Everyone, no matter what belt or level they are at, is willing to work with you and show you what they know. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and has a great relationship with Kroyler Gracie. The saying, "those who can't do, teach" doesn't not apply here. He does all of it expertly. Always willing to answer questions, and always willing demonstrate as much as the class needs. The people he trusts to teach any of the other classes are also very good teachers and extremely knowledgeable about Jiu Jitsu as well. When you walk in there and start participating you feel like you're part of the family. That being said, its a great workout with the bonus of learning a skill you will carry with you for the rest of your life if you can stick with it.

I'm a complete novice, but after six weeks and counting I can tell you some stuff for certain. 1: This is going to get me into great shape by distracting me with the learning of a fun, complex skill. 2: Chad and his people have really committed to making this a welcoming, family gym. I've rolled with over a dozen folks and have yet to hear anything except encouragement and a willingness to teach. 3: Good people and a great workout is a blessed thing. Come check it out.
