Awesome newly expanded, clean gym. All of the coaches are very welcoming, friendly, and happy to help or answer questions. They teach a variety of classes including boxing, muay thai and jiujitsu. All ages and all skill levels are welcome, you don't have to be in shape or knowledgeable about martial arts to join. They offer a long trial period so you can see if it's the right gym for you. Come have some fun and meet new friends!

The adult beginner Muay Thai class has been great as someone with no previous martial arts experience, LJ is an awesome instructor, and the facilities are nice and clean!

I’ve been going as a hobbyist for a couple months. First impression was the friendliness and openness/helpful to new comers. In both BJJ and Muy Thai I’ve found a flexible schedule and instructors willing to work with your skill level. It’s more of an open approach to gym culture rather than strict classes so that is a consideration. There are a lot of kids and parents that participate which is a plus in my book, meaning they know how to conduct safe, fun, and engaging content so they keep wanting to come back.

I have four kids (ages 5-11) enrolled in this wrestling class, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. It’s an excellent program for beginners , teaching solid fundamentals in a way that keeps the kids engaged and excited to learn. The coaches do a great job balancing structure and fun, making sure the younger kids stay involved while allowing the older ones to develop their skills. One thing I really appreciate is that my older kids can still get extra practice on their off days, which helps them improve outside of their regular team practices. Whether your child is just starting out or looking to build on what they already know, this class is a great option. Highly recommend!

I've been training jiu-jitsu for 4 years. I've traveled to many different schools across the country and this newly developed space is what a brand new student will feel welcomed in, and an experienced student will enjoy training at. The environment is welcoming, large space to train and their technique is killer! My personal favorite is the complementary towels and showers that students can use after training. Love training at this academy!

My husband and son started taking classes a few months ago and loved it. So I started our daughter in Jui Jitsu, and I started striking classes. We both absolutely love it. Everyone is supportive, encouraging, and welcoming. It’s the community we have been looking for! There are plenty of morning and evening classes to choose from, and best of all it’s something we can do with our three kids together as a family. The gym is starting to feel like a second home. There is something here for everyone!

We did quite a bit of research before choosing a gym for our kids to learn the sport and ultimately decided on Carlson Gracie. The kids class is great with the kids learning discipline and technique. The trial period is awesome and really helpful. There’s a good area for parents and siblings to hangout during class. And, we’ve noticed great improvement in all of the kids in the class in both their jiu jitsu and their discipline and listening etc. highly recommend this gym!

My daughter has been in the little bulldog program and it has been a wonderful experience. Not only is she learning the importance and the ability of self defense, but with that comes a sense of pride and self confidence that can't be taught. Amazing coaching staff and great owners. Highly recommend checking out Carlson whether it's little bulldogs for your kids or any of their adult oriented classes

Family friendly, super nice people and great kid instruction; crunchy meets nextgen crossfit sort of. You feel like you’ve found a delicious secret, and the parent crowd is kind. I didn’t know anything about martial arts but wanted to get my 6 year old son started with something I never had. My son loves LOVES it and you can hang with your under 4 year old with the other toddlers that parents brought. Right now my son is learning meaningful self defense and discipline from one instructor and I’m hearing recipe recommendations for bread and dad’s swapping details on fixing cars. The other instructor is helping a 5 year old tie her ponytail so she can practice takedowns. The best vibe.

I was nervous starting any type of combat sport that the atmosphere would be aggressive or uninviting, I have only had positive and supportive interactions with all the staff and students. Every time I spar with someone more experienced they are encouraging and focused on learning not “winning” and always tell me to keep training and come back next week. Really a great place to learn.

My son is 8 years old and has been asking to take jui jitsu class. We finally signed up and he loves it. After speaking with the owner and coach about his first class experience, the coaching improved to meet his needs as a beginner student. He looks forward to class. We love that he can attend multiple times per week.

My children tried out the various classes they have. They enjoyed all the classes. The trainers are professional, the facilities clean and organized. We would not hesitate recommending anyone who wants to try jiu jutsu, wrestling etc.

I decided to try beginning in martial arts, and I landed on Carlson Gracie Grand Rapids. They offer classes in muay thai, bjj, striking, boxing, and you can try a trial for 2 weeks to get a feel for what you like! My first day felt very intimidating, but I was warmly welcomed by coaches and students. Lots of basics classes for beginners, and intermediate/advanced classes as you progress. I highly recommend that you give it a try! After two weeks, I have had lots of variety and I plan to keep coming.

I would definitely recommend this gym over others. No matter your reasons and choices behind why you chose to start taking classes they are very understanding and kind. They definitely make it feel like a family. my confidence has boosted because of them and the staff members. The classes are great, but the staff and owners are what make this place extraordinary.

My 5 yr old son and I just started training together at CCGR and couldn’t be happier. Maxy needed a physical outlet for extra energy, and he’s beyond exciting for class and practices/coaches his siblings on what he’s learning. The community is awesome - everyone is very invested in the whole group growing and feeling at home. The facilities are great and there are a ton of class options with morning/evening classes for different schedules. Happy to be here!

The coach’s are wonderful but also give good discipline when needed (which is very much needed with our kiddo) this gym is truly a community that welcomes you with open arms. Just moved to the area and the first things i look for in a gym are cleanliness and safety and this gym crushes both! On sight laundry, showers and a foot scrub before you get on the mats are awesome features. Instruction is great and people are friendly! Would recommend!

So much fun and lots of patience for the kids when a kid cries the teacher actually take the time to talk and listen my daughter got hurt and the coach told her how proud he was that she came back the next day and isn’t giving up 1000/10 recommend this place

Really thankful for this place. My boys started as 4 and 6 year olds and have been doing it for 5 years. Now my 4 year daughter is doing it too! They love Jui Jitsu and I started doing it myself. I did a fair amount of research before starting my boys at Carlson Gracie GR and am extremely happy with our decision. I have 2 boys (8 & 6 years old) that have been going for almost a year and just started my youngest (4 years old). I have loved watching them grow in strength, technique, and self confidence. I just started myself so I could enjoy this journey with them. I recommend this place to anyone that has an interest. Come do the 2 week trial and you will be hooked!

I recently joined Carlson Gracie Grand Rapids and I couldn't be happier with my experience. From the moment I stepped on the mats I felt welcomed by the other trainers and staff. Everyone friendly and respectful. The instructors are very knowledgeable, patient, and supportive. The gym has a class dedicated for women only which I find very encouraging to get more girls in jiujitsu. I cannot recommend it enough.

Amazing welcoming community, I started attending the striking classes with pretty much no experience and it was incredible to see that everyone is there to help each other improve, no matter the skill level. LJ is an amazing, skilled instructor his pointers and experience make it a lot easier to understand and pick up the art of muay thai. Overall I highly recommend Carlson Gracie if you’re looking to pick up martial arts, the community is very friendly and welcoming which took away that fear of jumping in and trying something new, with someone who started with no experience i’ve picked up and learned a lot very quick thanks to the incredible instructors!

So far so good. This place has been fantastic to us from the minute we stepped in the door and took our shoes off. They are so accommodating to families with plenty of things to keep young ones that might not be in classes occupied. The coaches all work well with the kids they are teaching, a perfect balance of stern teaching, discipline, understanding, and respect. They keep the kids focused and in check without making them feel scared or under attack. We are looking forward to seeing what our little man will accomplish under their teaching. As well as having the rest of the family join in and take on classes as well. We highly recommend stopping in.

The staff is all so friendly and welcoming. The coaches (little bulldogs class) are very knowledgeable, dedicated, and patient. I felt my kiddo was in good hands within the first day! With some inattentive tendencies and hard time focusing, the coaches were still so good with him and made sure they were explaining things to him that would stick and he’d understand. He enjoys it so much!

We sought to have our daughter learn BJJ after she was aggressively bullied at school. My daughter was slightly reticent her first day but the staff and coaches made her feel welcomed. Since then we’ve come to all days available. It’s something that my daughter truly looks forward to each day and we’ve already noticed a marked improvement, even in this short period of time. Her confidence has grown as well. As parents, we’ve been very impressed. Husband and I did a drop in at the academy and had a great training experience. The owner and coach lead with a warm up, drills, situational drilling, and live rolling. The hour and a half class was the perfect amount of time for learning and a challenging workout. If you’re in the area, definitely stop in for competitive rolls and instruction.

This school/gym is incredible in atmosphere, prestige and openness to visitors. I haven't cross-trained a lot at bigger schools, so this was definitely a big jump for me. Super grateful for the opportunity to share the mats with these guys for my brief visit to Grand Rapids. The students and instructors feel so sharp technically, and I appreciate the upper belts giving me some rolls. Thanks for allowing me to train with you all.

We live and train in Kalamazoo but we wanted to check these guys out because they are known for their winning tournament program. We were glad we did! It was obvious to us why they are winners. They've mastered the principles of success in coaching, technique, dedication, laser focus, discipline, work ethic, leadership, endurance, sportsmanship, and heart just to name a few...all while building an amazing family atmosphere! Great place to take your child to learn Jiu Jitsu. Sarah is awesome and so are the coaches. My grandson wanted to quit after the first day but after making him go the second day, he now reminds me when it's time to go. He loves his teammates and the other parents are super nice. There’s no doubt stepping on the mat for the first time can be intimidating. However, when you’re at the right academy like Carlson Gracie Grand Rapids you don’t have to worry. I’ve been trading Jiu Jitsu for 18 months and was recently on a business trip to Grand Rapids. I wanted to get some training in, stopped ed by the academy, of course I was a bit nervous as I was in uncharted waters but, let me tell you, this place felt like family from the moment I walked through the door. Not only that, the content of the class was next level, the instructors were incredible and hands on helpful, and everyone I rolled with were just straight up great people. If your in the Grand Rapids region and want to learn Jiu Jitsu I highly recommend Carlson Gracie Grand Rapids. Thank you Professor Mike and the rest of the Carlson Gracie Grand Rapids family!

This place is amazingly!!! Whether your child is a beginner or already has experience in BJJ, they have a class for you. Each class from beginner to advanced youth has the right amount of challenge and discipline to suit there age and experience.

We love this gym! We have been attending with our 7 year old for almost two years now. Mike and Sarah are some of the most wonderful people you will ever meet. The coaches are phenomenal. Fellow students and parents are so supportive- you’ll never want to leave!

Stopped in for a visit from Sudbury. Didnt know what to expect. Great welcome, very friendly and skilled people, good culture. Extremely impressed with the supportive interactions I witnessed between youth students. This would be my place if I lived in GR. Will be back.

Our son has only been a few times, but he’s hooked. Instructors take their time to help kids along & answer questions that my kiddo had his first time. We’re definitely going back.

We are new to this community and our experience in getting involved has been very pleasant. The instructors are incredible with my seven year old son and the family dynamic of the community is very evident. We look forward to being a part of Carlson Gracie GR and highly recommend it to everyone at any age.

The training has been great for my five-year-old. They keep him focused and engaged. He is having fun while learning technique and discipline at every session. Very neat and clean facility with a lounge and viewing area as well. Top-notch place.

My kids loved this class walking in on day 1! The instructors helped them through each thing even when they were short handed they made sure to help the new kids. Very friendly environment and many of the other kids were graciously helping our kids as well.

Excellent Jiu-jitsu gym with great instructors that will help a member learn and improve at any level. I was a little intimidated to start my training journey at age 41, but I felt welcomed the moment I stepped into gym. I would highly recommend this place to anyone starting or continuing their Jiu-jitsu journey.

From the first moment I came in the place just speaks of a learning atmosphere. All the staff are welcoming, and the instructors truly want to teach you. Their hours are set up so even if you work night shift you'd still be able to pursue this martial art. Highly recommend it.

THIS PLACE IS A REAL BJJ GYM! Very warm welcome. Been training for a year on the west coast. I met Mike and Alex. This gym creates straight beasts! Great rolls. The students there are extremely skilled. THE BEST GYM IN GRAND RAPIDS.

Amazing instructors! Patient and extremely knowledgeable in their craft. My 6 year old daughter has loved it from the first day! We started off in the no gi days and she immediately wanted to add on the gi days as well. Cannot recommended this spot enough!

I have wanted to try jiu-jitsu for quite a while. My friend and I chose this place to begin our journey. The people who run this gym show they really care about respect and safety. I felt welcomed even as a fresh beginner which was really important to me. Also, the amount of classes they have offers great options throughout the week even if you can only make it a couple of times.

Came here hoping I could find a home to get back into BJJ after being out of it for nearly to 10 years. Started the 2 week free trial.The first class went all right, but the basics class was taught by an immature blue belt. Said "If your an middle age bald man you're going to like half guard" while looking at me as a slight jab. Ok heard worse, just didn't feel very welcomed for being new in town. This is coming from a kid with a pokemon gi on. Also they permit legs locks which lead to unnecessary injuries. The front desk lady, although nice, gave me a loaner gi, but when I ask wheres the belt she was "you don't need a belt." Uh, yes I do! Not having that belt left my gi flopping around and I was a lot easier to control. Also there is a lot of ego as I seen white belts just shoulder checking as they walk past each other. Shows that they don't enforce any etiquette or mutual respect for one another which I think is really important to me if I'm going to bring my daughter with me. I will say the scheduling is really flexible and it is a huge gym with a lot of amenities which is nice, that is why I'm giving this 2 stars. But would rather go to a different gym where they show respect to one another and maybe have someone who is mature teaching fundamentals. Thanks but no thanks.
