Brand new to BJJ and I couldn’t be happier with where I decided to sign up. The environment is great, Instruction is high quality and all of the members have been extremely helpful and welcoming. Highly recommend the Bears Den to anyone looking to start Jiu-Jitsu.
I walked into Bears Den almost 1 year ago looking to fill a void that high level competition left when I relocated to the area. I knew nobody and was no longer competing in sport. I needed something and went to Bears Den to try to find it. A desire to learn a new skill, fill my soul with hard competition, and get some good old fashion grind time in is what was sought. I was met with great coaching, tough training partners, a competitive environment at many levels and a feeling that took me a while to wrap my hands around. It's a true showcase of people who want you to develop not only your grappling skills but improve your life in many areas, physically, mentally, and emotionally while building a ton of confidence along the way. A room with people from many walks of life (cops, dispensary experts, first responders, recovery, military veterans, tradesman, health experts, bikers, cage fighters, college/pro athletes, BJJ champions and law professionals) come into the room with a vibe that you have to experience to explain. I recommend Bears Den to anyone from anywhere in any walk of life with any level of skill, whether you're dropping in, its your first time, or your looking to join a team to compete. Oh yeah, that feeling that was hard to explain, its the feeling you get when you see true friends. #ITSMYLIFESTYLE #BEARSDEN

Jeff is a wealth of knowledge and goes out of his way to make sure everyone is having a safe and fun time. He is a huge part of the success that I have had in both training and competition. You would certainly make friends and learn a ton here at Bears Den!
Excellent instructors! Main focus is teaching kids skills (not money). Great vibes, laid back environment... my kid absolutely LOVES going! Definitely recommend!!!
I can't say enough good about this place. Great atmosphere, great people. The coaches and instructors really take time with everyone. The kids program is awesome. My kids and I train there and absolutely love it.
I trained Jiu-Jitsu as a white belt somewhere else, then transferred here after receiving my blue belt. The way the coaches interact with students is incredible, they are patient and really work with people to help them evolve in the sport. Constantly fine-tuning my every movement. The prices are phenomenal, awesome environment. My guard game is quickly improving thanks to the coaches at Bears Den.
I'm an over the road truck driver and dropped in for some mat time. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly with excellent technical instrucion and some good rolls. I have family in the area so when I'm in town I'll definitely make time for the bears den :-)
I’ve trained at multiple gyms throughout my life, many different coaches and personalities all around. They all have good things to offer, but Jeff and the Bears Den coaching staff is second to none! There is no better place to train around here. The whole team made me feel like family from the moment I walked in. The instruction is top notch and the friendly but hard working vibe on the mats is welcoming to anyone who comes in. Stop procrastinating and come learn from the best around. You’ll never regret becoming a better version of yourself and the Bears Den team will help get you there!
This academy is amazing! With a laid back yet competitive environment, top-notch instruction, variety of classes like kids wrestling or jiujitsu classes, adult jiujitsu during the day or at night, or adult striking classes, with a variety of instructors who bring real value to the table, bears den has got it all and I am so glad I signed up here! The classes are structured in a way that actually helps the students remember what we are learning and there is lots of room for asking questions and furthering YOUR game. My jiujitsu has grown immensely and the support from my team is unmatched, I love this place and if you’re thinking about checking it out I would 100% go, even if it’s just to try it out, you won’t regret it!
Haven't been in a while, and haven't even been there that long either, but I still wanna show support for the gym. Training partners are great, everyone wants to help others get better. Coaches know what they're talking about.
You don't even have to be there long to feel you're part of something, the people here are like one big family, if you wanna do jiu-jitsu or mma, I highly recommend you train here.
My three children trained here and they really excelled and shows so much improvement in their skills in Jiujitsu and Wrestling. They don't know anything about wrestling and Jiujitsu when they start coming here.
We really appreciate the Bear's Den Coaching Team for helping all the kids acquired skills that will help their life.I believed this is one of the life skills children must have to help them develop to become a well-rounded and well trained and becoming discipline adults and citizens (hopefully) in the future.
Bear’s Den is an awesome gym for anyone in the downriver area interested in grappling. The coaches are all excellent. The other members are great. It honestly feels like a family. From the kids jiu jitsu and wrestling to the adult classes, its a great place to train for the everyone.
You're not going to find a better grappling academy downriver whether you're a hobbyist or a competitor. You'll be treated with respect and like family while learning a discipline that will improve every area of your life.
I have known and been an athlete (wrestling) of Coach Jeff's for most of my life and I couldn't ask for a better mentor, teacher, and friend. He is a great teacher and takes time to go over the details of each move/position to ensure his athletes can be confident about the techniques. I plan on training with the Bear's Den team any time I return to the area. If I still lived Downriver I wouldn't think twice about going anywhere else. As far as the youth grappling component goes, I was in middle school when Coach Jeff came into my life as a wrestling coach and we were apart of a very successful program and he is still a great support system as a 25 year old. I do not have children but I couldn't think of another person I'd want to send them to.
I came in after a few years of combatives training and a few months of training with a culty jiu-jitsu gym with poor coaching skills and very limited drills, exercises and techniques.
Within the first hour of class at Bears Den, I loved the coaching method, the techniques, drills and skills were absolutely new to me, the people are friendly and willing to teach, the atmosphere is just 100% better. It’s a smaller room but I rather enjoyed that.
Anytime I was unsure or confused there was a student or coach willing to run it through with me every which way until I got it.
On top of all this, it’s cheaper than every Jiu-Jitsu membership than I’ve ever encountered and best of all NO CONTRACTS. No culty business tricks of pulling you in an office to swindle you into an overpriced year long membership and having to wear strictly the gym-name patches on all your gear, none of that. I was told they plan to stay in Wyandotte but move to a larger location AND they have a discounted price for veterans and there’s sponsored memberships if you’re a disabled veteran.
Hands down best jiu jitsu/grappling gym in downriver.
So I walked in this place expecting to feel animosity because I came as a novice from another local team; and there was none. I felt nothing but welcomed. The coaches do amazing job of making sure that everybody knows the moves perfectly, they will take the time to show you what you need to know over and over again until you can do it right. The Gis that they give you when you sign up are very high quality. But the best part of all: is that I get to go train and I know that my money goes to supporting Veterans and Leos. They work with companies like adopt a cop and we defy so they can sponsor athletes who would not get to join a team otherwise
This place is pretty awesome. There are a bunch of highly experienced grapplers there, and I was offered plenty of assistance in understanding the appropriate way to execute the drills. Jeff is a nice and welcoming guy, with tons of coaching experience, including leading a competitive middle school wrestling team for several years. He has the patience and experience necessary to help you on your journey from beginner to advanced level grappler. We worked a half guard weave pass, and an advanced kimura that will definitely help my game (I love the kimura). I'm happy they opened up this humble den in my old stomping ground, and I'm happy to know I'll be back to train again with these kind killers on a weekly basis. I recommend this gym for grapplers of any experience level in the downriver area. They also have competitive pricing (and their graphic is fking sweet!)!!
The coaches have a passion for teaching and for people. I have known them for a number of years and would recommend anyone interested in grappling sports to check Bears Den out. There is something special here, and it’s very people centric.
I dropped in for an adult jiu jitsu gi session & had a great experience! Jeff is an excellent instructor & offers the following: Kid's wrestling, kid's jiu jitsu both gi/no-gi & adult jiu jitsu both gi/no-gi.
Known Jeff (the owner) my entire jiu jitsu career (10+years). No doubt the best place downriver for all your grappling needs (wrestling, submission grappling, BJJ). The definition of what a coach is. Sign up now before there's a waiting list !!
Great place to learn the art of jiu jitsu. Very friendly coaches. The facility is well maintained and very clean. Perfect environment for any individual to take up or continue their training.
Dropped in for a Sunday session and was not disappointed. Coach Jeff gave top notch instruction and the team was very welcoming, I felt welcomed immediately. Looking forward to going back!
I was able to drop in for a class with Coach Jeff Maloney. Jeff has extensive knowledge in wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, creating a unique grappling experience. Great place to check out if you want to become an overall better grappler. Jeff is great working with you if it’s your first day or if you have years of experience and need some tips. I would definitely recommend checking this place out! Great for experience in BJJ, wrestling and MMA grappling.
I have over 25 years in wrestling and martial arts. I have met very few people with as much love and passion for the sports of wrestling and jiu jitsu as Professor Jeff at the Bear’s Den. Add years of competition and coaching experience, a dedicated team of assistant coaches, and a great environment to train in, the Bear’s Den is a fantastic place to learn grappling and self defense whether you are a beginner or someone who has been rolling for decades.
Looking to try Brazilian JiuJitsu then look no further... Bear’s Den is the perfect place for you! Coach Jeff is an exceptional teacher. Best place to train in the downriver area.
It’s also family friendly so the entire family can come!
You won’t regret it.
Bear's Den is a great place to learn, grow and have some fun with good people. Coach Maloney has coached me in wrestling since 7th grade through high school and to be able to return many years later and be immersed in a similar atmosphere and see some old faces is amazing. I think it's something everyone should try and a group of people everyone should be around if you want to be part of something special, get fit and learn a new skill.
He also offers kids classes for wrestling and jiu-jitsu that my 3 little brothers attend. They give it 5 stars as well. Sign up the whole family.
Jeff is a high quality relaxed instructor who really helps work with you when you don't understand a technique. The entire club gives off a very welcoming non judgemental vibe. All the members I've met are very welcoming and friendly as well . My wife just tried BJJ for the first time and she feels very welcomed here.
Come in and I promised you'll get addicted ☺️
Coach Maloney is an excellent jiu-jitsu instructor. He is very good at explaining the moves, and then once everyone is doing the technique, he takes the time to make sure everyone gets it. I felt welcome, and the place was nice and clean too. Everyone was very friendly. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who lives in the Downriver area. There are even pictures of each basic jiu-jitsu position out in the hallway for those who don't know them yet, which I think is really cool, and the prices of the gis he sells when you sign up are extremely affordable. All around five stars.
Bear's Den Grappling Center is awesome. Great Jiu-Jitsu instruction by Jeff Maloney. Everyone works together and encourages you. I definitely recommend Bear's Den Grappling Center. Adult and kids classes are available you won't find a better place to train.
When entering the Den you quickly feel welcomed by the instructors and the students. The atmosphere is family friendly and the gym is well cleaned and sanitized. You can tell they have made a valid effort to make you feel as safe as possible when training.
Coach Maloney is a great instructor. He takes the time to ensure that the students understand the fundamentals and are able to execute. Also the kids respond really well to his instructions.
The coaching staff for both the jiujitsu and wrestling are top notch you can see the years of experience in the way they present the lessons. Fun and friendly place without any of the ego
Coach Maloney is awesome, he is passionate in everything he does and it shows with his way of teaching wrestling and Jujitsu. The best part about this place is the value and the instruction. Not only does dad get to roll around there are classes for the kids for both wrestling and jujutsu. I can’t recommend this place enough and excited to see to it grow.
