As a parent, finding the right extracurricular activity for my child was extremely important to me. I enrolled my son and daughter in the kids' program at The Mount, and it has been an incredible experience for all of us as a family over the last year of attendance. So much so, we enrolled our 3rd child today who now meets the age requirement. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly. The instructors are not only highly skilled in BJJ but also have a natural ability to connect with kids. They create a positive environment that encourages teamwork, respect, and discipline. My son/daughter love the classes and looks forward to them every week! They attend as many as they can, sometimes 6 days a week. The curriculum is well-structured, focusing on fundamental techniques while also incorporating fun games and drills. I’ve seen my kids grow in confidence and physical fitness since they started. They’re learning valuable skills such as self-defense, focus, and perseverance. The instructors emphasize not just martial arts skills but also the importance of good sportsmanship and respect for others. Another highlight is the community aspect of the school. We’ve met many other families, and it feels like a supportive network. The school organizes events and competitions, which are great opportunities for the kids to showcase what they’ve learned. Overall, I highly recommend The Mount for any parent looking to introduce their child to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It’s more than just a martial arts program; it’s a place where kids can grow, learn, and have fun!

I am truly at a loss for where to begin in expressing the sheer excellence of the Mount. What consistently draws me back? Is it the pristine cleanliness of the dojo? Perhaps it's the exceptional instruction provided by Guto, Judo Mike, Sensei Jim, Sensei Ahmed, Sensei Laura, Idan, Jean-Marc, and Sensei Drew, all of whom consistently embody wholesomeness and provide invaluable education. Or is it the profound sense of respect that permeates the dojo, unmatched by any other facet of society? Could it be the camaraderie and companionship shared among fellow students, with whom I engage in grappling and self-improvement? Perhaps it's the personal and spiritual growth I experience within these walls as I pursue my physical passion. The list could go on indefinitely, for there are simply too many remarkable aspects of the Mount to articulate. If you seek a school with a distinct identity, look no further. Join our community today. Furthermore, I'm excited to share that the Mount has expanded to three locations, including Rockville. This means that some of the finest martial arts coaching available is now more accessible than ever before.

Fantastic experience at The Mount BJJ & MMA! As someone who travels often, finding a reliable and welcoming gym can be tough, but The Mount exceeded all expectations. Coach Jim and the team create an incredibly supportive environment for both beginners and seasoned practitioners. Grateful for the opportunity to train here!

I had the privilege of visiting the facility in Mount Airy and Urbana. The cleanliness of the facilities is consistent as well as the environment in each. Coach Jim is very knowledgeable and passionate about martial arts and that is translated through his teachings. It doesn’t matter what your experience is coming to the gym, you will be welcomed and feel comfortable and like a part of the team right away. I would HIGHLY recommend for anyone (adult & kids) wanting to learn self defense, compete, or for fitness.

Came in for a drop-in. The instructor was knowledgeable and very welcoming. The mats were well taken care of, and there was a lot of space to roll. Class started with a warm-up, followed by a few techniques and finally a few rounds of rolling. Highly recommend and look forward to coming back.

Over the years we have tried a few different martial arts places in the area and all of them were mostly about selling belt colors instead of teaching the kids how to defend themselves. We joined the mount about a year ago and the first thing we noticed is that it takes a long time and a lot of hard work to move up the ranks. I remember the first class my son joined, he learned more in one hour then he did in 3 months at the other places. On day one they teach you how to roll, pin, be more physical and most importantly becoming more confident. And for my undersized shy 9 year old kid, we could tell this was helping with his growth. We spent several months training there before we had to take a break for soccer season. Last weekend before a game this bully who is a foot taller than my son came up to him and said some nasty stuff and pushed him to the ground. As he tried to get up he was pushed to the ground again. My young son who has never been in a fight before immediately went low to this kids body, put both his arms around each of the other kids legs (who is a 20 pounds heavier then he is), used his own body weight to pick him up and slams the bully to the ground. By the time us parents ran over to see what was happening my son already had the kid pinned. My son gets up and runs away crying. Not because he was hurt but because he thought he was going to get in trouble for defending himself. I 1000% recommend every single person to go and train at The Mount. My son could not have been able to protect himself with out the instruction and leadership from coach Jim and the rest of the staff at The Mount.

Amazing gym for both youth and adults. Clean, safe, fun and the instructors are top notch. If your interested in training BJJ, MMA, Judo, boxing this is the place to be. Both of my sons and I train here and it’s the best gym experience we’ve ever had. Highly recommend the Mount in Urbana

Absolutely love the welcoming environment, instruction and facilities of this place. After a week trial we knew we wanted to join this gym. I joined, and my 9 year old joined. The fact that he actually smiles and has fun here, tells me all I need to know about this place. Excellent instructors, who genuinely care about their students. If you are on the fence about trying them out, give the week trial a shot. No commitment. I promise you it will be worth it.

Can't say enough positive things about this academy, but I will share what has stood out to me that sets The Mount apart from everywhere else I have trained: (1) Comprehensive grappling academy. It's not often you can find an academy that will present students grappling in the context of BJJ, No-Gi submission grappling, MMA, wrestling, and Judo. This is a one-stop-shop for everything right here. Instead of arguing over which “style” is the best, at The Mount we are taught that Judo and Jiu-jitsu are best learned as one (as it should be). (2) Quality of instruction. We've had grapplers of the highest level come to give seminars at the academy at very reasonable prices: Bernardo Pitel, Dean Lister, Olympic Judoka Nicholas Delpopolo (just to name a few). It's reassuring that all the instructors are committed to keeping up with what works at the highest level and are keeping up with the ever-evolving sport of submission grappling. (3) Community engagement. I LOVE that every month Laura Eyler (black belt) provides a women-only self-defense seminar FREE OF CHARGE to the community. Our town of Mt. Airy is lucky to have an academy that invests so much into empowering women. (4) Quality of training partners. The open mat rounds are fantastic— I’ve gotten great rounds with many people who will push you and keep you honest, but also take care of you in the process. My training partners have competed in Muay Thai, Buhurt, submission grappling, MMA, Judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, and folkstyle wrestling. I’ve gotten many “looks” here and I have felt myself improve as a result. (5) Two locations to train: Mt Airy and Urbana! I'm grateful to the instructors and the community they have built. Thank you.

My kids absolutely love this place. Instructors are top notch and kid friendly. My kids were hesitant expecting an intimidating environment. Definitely not the case. They are visibly building confidence and self-esteem while making new friends. Highly recommended!

Grateful for my coaches and teammates at The Mount. The gym is local for me and the experience is top notch. Each class we drill and get in high reps to really allow the techniques to sink in and I always leave feeling like I am becoming the strongest version of myself. All newcomers are welcome and we look forward to growing together on this path of self-mastery and discipline.

This is the first Jiu jitsu gym I’ve ever been a part of and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. My son and I train here 3-4 days a week and both the adults and the kids classes are amazing and the coaching staff is top notch. Cannot recommend The Mount highly enough to anyone and everyone looking to get into Jiu jitsu, Judo, or MMA.

Cannot recommend this place highly enough. I’ve trained for several years at many schools and Mount Airy is hands down my favorite gym ever. Friendly family atmosphere, new, state of the art training surfaces, immaculately clean, and some of the best and most technical coaching in the entire DMV. The mount feels more like a family than a gym. Childrens, kids, womens self defense, BJJ, judo, and MMA. no matter your experience level, you’ll love it here

I have been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu now for going on 5 years. I am currently a student and I continue to learn more and more every day. The facility is extremely clean and well laid out, the instructors are top notch, and the training environment is family friendly and a great atmosphere. I can not recommend the Mount any higher to anyone I speak with. The kids and adult programs are exactly what I was looking for and I am very happy training here. If you want a challenge, this is exactly the place to be. Do yourself a favor and come and train here, you will not regret it!

I just attended my first BJJ class last night here. It's something I have been wanting to try for years but just could never make fit my schedule. I was extremely impressed with the facility, instructors, and other students. I'm excited to have the opportunity to learn here for many years to come. If you've considered taking BJJ, MMA, or self defense classes, I highly recommend giving them a try.
