What an amazing class! The environment is on point and the pricing is affordable! They make you feel really welcome here! Definitely recommend for anybody looking for a first time BJJ experience.
Posted 10 months agoBest Jiu-Jitsu Academy to start your family!!! Some schools out there teach bad habits or take so much time to teach basic skills, but not Virtus! The immersion and exposure to so many different levels of grapplers and teachers is unlike any other school we’ve tried. But the best thing about Virtus is the culture. Family friendly, flexible, but also competitive for those seeking to become champions!
Posted 1 year agoBest gym in Pensacola! I travel an hour, four times a week, just to train here—and it’s absolutely worth it! Not only is it the cleanest gym I’ve ever seen, but the way they welcome you truly makes you feel right at home. I’m so honored to be a part of the Virtus family!
Posted 1 year agoVery welcoming gym, I loved training here! Everyone is kind and it's clear they're really trying to foster a good community. Whenever I've brought up a concern, they're receptive and have always addressed it promptly. What I love is that they go out of their way to talk in person and make sure everything is resolved. BJJ is an amazing sport that I would recommend to everyone, and training at Virtus is a great way to improve both in and out of the mats.
Posted 1 year agoWe love this BJJ academy for our daughter and the adult class gets down too. The professor and his instructors are both amazing and kind. And if want it and put in the time they’ll have you and/or your kid ready for tournaments in no-time.
Virtus is a great gym for everyone, from beginners to experts! Coach Jackson is an excellent instructor for gi and no-gi. The gym has a clean training environment that is welcoming to anyone who enters the door. Whether your goal is to lose weight or win gold medals, Virtus is a one-stop shop!
Always a great time training at Virtus. Very clean and inviting atmosphere. Professor Jackson and Coach Alyssa are great instructors. Will be back again for sure!
I traveled to Pensacola for work and was recommended this gym by one of my coaches in my hometown. Jackson is a great coach, there is a very good mix of practitioners here and the energy is great. Thank you Virtus for such a great training experience
World Class instruction. Literally. Not a joke. Professor Jackson is world class. Pensacola is blessed to have this level of instruction. They offer classes at 6 am - I love that.
Love this place! Very friendly and welcoming community. I had no prior experience wrestling or in martial arts and they provide great instruction for beginners.
Virtus is a great academy to train! You are not only treated like family, but you have the option in who you want to train with. If you are feeling froggy and want to train with a higher belt, you are welcome to do so. If you want to train with someone bigger, that’s fine too! If you don’t feel comfortable training with specific people, you don’t have to. It’s totally up to you in how you want to train. There is never any judgement and everyone is looking to help each other out! Professor Jackson is very knowledgeable and will work with each student until they understand the drills.
Virtus Jiu Jitsu is the best place in town. Jackson Matos is a world-class competitor and a master of his craft. He has created an environment that is very supportive of his students. The members are friendly and helpful. This is a great place for the first-time Jiu Jitsu practitioner to learn and for the seasoned practitioner to sharpen their skills.
Since day one, Virtus BJJ has provided an excellent environment for my daughters and I. Professor Jackson possesses extensive technical knowledge and expertise in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Great gym! Great People! Great workouts! Perfect for beginners and seasoned grapplers. Great family atmosphere and everyone makes you feel at home and welcomed as soon as you walk in. Great for families!!
Virtus BJJ is THE BEST gym in Pensacola. Professor Jackson and Alyssa have created an environment suited for high intensity training while also prioritizing safety. Whether you’re looking for a jiu jitsu family or just looking to try something new, this is the place to be!

The best bjj gym in the area, great coach, great people, I definitely recommend it!
Jackson runs a great gym. He is amazing at teaching beginners and advanced competitors. Relaxed learning environment!
My son started 2 months ago and after some time I decided to give it a try. So far I have really enjoyed it. Professor Jackson and Alyssa have been extremely welcoming and made it feel like a home. The higher colored belts have also been very welcoming and more than willing to to give me tips and tricks.
Virtus have a great adult and kids program. Family oriented. I have known Profesor Jackson for 5 year he is one in the best in the area. Come and train Jiujitsu at Virtus Academy you will loved!
One word to describe this place. It’s family, I’ve known professor Jackson for 5years ,as well as, trained under CHECKMAT about the same. This environment is friendly, kind, and amazing. My bjj game has improved due to the work we put in each other and the motivation of training that inspires us to reach our goals. I appreciate professor Jackson and his lovely family! One day I hope I can be a CHECKMAT black belt under my good friend professor Jackson. Please stop by learn from his experience with bjj. Hard training, good basics, and a family environment.
Professor Jackson is knowledgeable and kind; I travel every week for work and have been to over a dozen gyms across the Southeast, this is one of my favorites!
My son, wife, and I all train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Professor Jackson is the reason. Top of the line technique for beginner to to whatever your level. Self defense, fitness, or competition Professor Jackson’s technique will benefit. Virtus is clean, well maintained, and safe environment for all.
Great facility, world class coaches, and most importantly friendly environment. If you are in Pensacola and you are looking for a jiu jitsu academy, Virtus Jiu-Jitsu is the place you want to go. Highly recommended!

Excellent school with great team oriented atmosphere and experienced teachers 🤙🏽
I have been out of training for a few years and it was a little nervous to get back on the mats. As soon as I walked in the doors I felt welcomed and very comfortable training with the staff and team. Professor Jackson and his team are very professional, great instructors, and runs a very clean and safe class. I highly recommend this place and I am so happy to have found my new team!
Great atmosphere and comprehensive instruction. Real fun experience, challenging yet very rewarding!
I’ve been to a couple gyms in my time of doing Jiu Jitsu and I have to say this is the best one. The atmosphere is the best I’ve experienced. And professor Jackson is the best! Definitely try it out!
Really can't say much about the school or the teacher, other then they don't return phone calls or e mails . I left both and never heard back from them so I figured they didn't want my business so I found another place to train. Shame really was looking forward to seeing what that school had to offer.
I attended Virtus BJJ Checkmat in Pensacola a few times during Open mat while I drive through there to VA from TX and while I had fun with a few of the other belts, there was a young female employee whom I recently had the displeasure of meeting, she seemed to not really be happy about working there which is weird since it's always been such a great community in all the gyms I've been to where the employees have equal passion for BJJ as all the members. She made her way to me when I took a break for some water I brought and because she didn't recognize me demanded to know who I came with and that the "Open Mat" was for members only and if I wanted to stay I would have to pay $25. Which is not what any Open Mat I have been to is nor does it mention that anywhere on their website and had I known wouldn't have gone there, maybe $5-$10 but $25 seems a bit steep for a for even 1 day. While I had been there a few times before I never stay longer than 2-3 rolls about 30 or so minutes, as I was Medically Retired from the military my body just isn't what it used to be and I let the people that I roll with to know that. I hadn't seen much of her till the open mat the other day but I would highly recommend that the Gym management take a look into her as I have seen other comments in here about her specifically as well. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and treat people with respect and how I'd want to be treated. But she charged at me with attitude, disgust and hostility. I will never go back to them again. I have been to some of the other BJJ academies in the area and have been met with respect and no one asked for money at an open mat I did ask if they needed $ too, maybe was a regional thing and they thought it was outlandish that such a demand was made. I give 1/5 stars as I can't give 0 because there are some nice people there, if not for that disgruntled employee I'd probably be closer to 3.5 to 4 stars.
Posted 1 year agoTerrible gym. No weight classes at all. If another student is being to aggressive or trying in any way to genuinely harm you, you can assure that the instructors and teachers won’t do a thing. The instructors lack discipline and the ability to properly teach. I wouldn’t waste my time here. Find a proper gym.
