I had a wonderful and memorable time training for Jiu Jitsu at Professor Javier's Velez Jiu Jitsu academy. Professor conducts the training session in a fun and friendly way. He simplifies the complicated JJ moves, gives many check points for the techniques and explains the flow very well. We practice the techniques effectively with fellow training mates for certain duration of time. Professor closely watches us and corrects us. Higher belts training mates are always willing to teach white belt trainees, help us improve our techniques. During the roll, they give us space to work on moves and some times they let us submit them. Much respect. This academy emphasizes a lot on rolling after training session. I find it as an effective way to better our techniques and also to improve our confidence level. Professor and his team ensure safe space for rolling. Training mates too intend to help us improve. Special mention to Coach Drew, Coach Rick, Coach Carlos. They provide their valuable time for helping us fine tune our techniques, they are willing to spend time for a quick one and one discussion too. Coach Carlos's enthusiasm and passion are very contagious. He is always friendly and encouraging. Enjoyed training with him. I thank Professor Javier again for such a wonderful academy and training mates. Bettered my technique and confidence level. Highly recommend this academy.

I have been training at Velez Jiujitsu for two years. In those two years, I have grown fond of the people who train at Velez and have considered Javier Velez a friend. The school is very technical in its teaching but very relaxed in its atmosphere. Javier has a gift for teaching and a knack of getting people to bond over their love of Jiujitsu. This is my first year enrolling in BJJ classes. Everyone is extremely friendly and willing to help you if you are not grasping the material at first. I really enjoy learning about the techniques, meeting new people, and experiencing a full body work out. Great place to train. They focus on technique and timing over brute strength. The lessons learned here can be applied everywhere in life my only complaint is that I wish I had the time to train more. The staff is great and the students are cool. I've been there since 2014 so long enough to see them all evolve as martial artists and instructors. I started out there mainly for the striking classes they used to have and it took me years to be comfortable with BJJ and now I'm a proud white belt. God willing I'll be able to bring my kids to train there.

Took a seminar with Professor Javier and to say I was amazed would be an understatement. His methodology and pedagogy is something to be rivaled. He has a wonderful way of explaining the process of the move and what the defenses and offenses you would have. He brought some of his members to the seminar and they were equally as humble and definitely shared their love for BJJ. If you have the chance, definitely check his gym out. Moved here from the west coast and new to the area, saw that there was a jiu jitsu place right next to where I lived, and eventually signed up after a few months. Wish I had joined sooner. I had taken classes elsewhere in the past before, but kept quitting due to the steep learning curve. I would feel lost and embarrassed during drills. When I joined here I noticed that the instructors here all care if you learn, and so do your teammates. In addition, there are fundamentals class suited for beginners every weekday evening as well, which is a great option for people just getting started. Can't recommend this place enough!

The level and detail of the instruction, the absolutely wonderful community of training partners that attend, a clean and comfortable environment to train in just to name a few. I have been a student of Professor Javier’s for a couple of years. Velez Jiu-jitsu is an amazing academy. You will not find a better, more capable instructor or teammates. Everyone there is committed to helping each other grow in a safe and nurturing environment. In response to the negative and unjust review left by the disgruntled “almost student” let me say this: sometimes a difficult decision has to be made for the benefit of the whole. As someone who operated a martial arts academy for nearly 20 years, I too have had to expel students who created a harmful and unsafe environment for others and themselves. And while it is true that we are learning a martial art, the fact remains that every individual at any given academy is there for their own, very personal reasons. Those reasons should always be respected! Should a student that is older, less aggressive, or less physically fit be any less deserving of training and instruction. Your failure to respect that, may be the reason you were advised to go elsewhere. Kudos to Professor Javier for making the tough call and excising a potential cancer before it metastasized.

This is the first BJJ gym I have ever trained at so I don’t have a big reference point. What I do have is testimonies with a lot of different gyms/clubs/personal trainers etc. I am very analytical and observant so I notice that the people at this gym genuinely care about you getting better at the sport. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re not being judged for not being good or consistent but on the contrary being encouraged, being encouraged by the people there. I first started off with a free trial and it made me want to go back the next day and the day after etc.... I highly recommend this gym to anyone that is looking for a great place to train and very knowledgeable people that are very patient to educate others! I can see myself here for a while without a doubt.

Since I began training at the academy it's been an enlightening experience. I was a complete novice to any form of martial arts and everyone has been very welcoming. I'm grateful to have joined Javier Velez and the team at Diesel Training Grounds in this journey of learning the art of Jiu Jitsu. Only regret I have is not have walked into the academy a lot sooner.

I have been a member of Diesel Training Grounds since May 2015. In my time of training I have seen a considerable change in my mental and physical health. The facility is owned and run by Javier Velez, a martial arts black belt in two disciplines with 30+ years of experience, who offers classes in boxing, kickboxing, and a focus on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As a military veteran I found it difficult to transition to a place that could supplement the comradery and sense of accomplishment I was accustomed to. I found both at Diesel Training Grounds.

The assistant coach Drew is extremely rude man that has nothing better to do than meddle in Arizona's elections. He proceeds to tell woman that they are slow and that they are not really a woman and use to be a man. Definitely not a man/coach that one would want around children. He needs to grow up before he should be allowed around children.
