Uflacker Academy has been an incredible place for my son to begin his Jiu-Jitsu journey. He started at just 5 years old, and from day one, the coaches made the experience both fun and educational. Their techniques for kids are outstanding—everything is taught in a way that’s easy to understand and engaging through play. Coach Crystal always greeted the kids with a big smile and motivated them to keep practicing. Coach Adam played a huge role in helping my son, master some of the more difficult positions with patience and care. And I have to give my deepest respect to Professor Christian—not only did he see potential in my son, but he also encouraged him to enter his first tournament, where he came out victorious. From my very first email to my most recent class, the staff at Uflacker Academy have been nothing short of amazing. I’m a 41-year-old guy who’s not in the best shape, and starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was a little intimidating for me. Coach Crystal was incredible — she answered all my questions and made me feel welcome from the start. When I showed up for my first class, I was nervous because I had no idea what I was doing. I was paired with a purple belt who couldn’t have been more patient. He took his time to explain not just what to do, but why we do it, and what happens if you do it differently. What really stood out to me is the culture here — it’s not an ego-driven environment where higher belts try to dominate lower belts. Instead, the upper belts are super supportive, eager to help, and genuinely happy to teach. The professors and coaches are top-notch, and the students are some of the nicest people I’ve met. Training here is hard — and that’s exactly what I want. You get out what you put in, and I know that every skill I earn will be the result of real work. I feel confident I’ll continue to grow and learn at Uflacker Academy, and I’m completely hooked.

I have trained martial arts including BJJ for nearly 20 years now at various schools, while competing in BJJ and fighting MMA in Illinois, California, Oregon, and Vegas. Having trained here for over a year, I can say Uflacker Academy is top tier by every measure. Professor Christian’s world class experience and lineage are apparent in every class. Instruction is detailed and understandable. Professor Christian and his instructors are always engaged and dedicated to the students, providing help and advice during drilling. The curriculum structure is excellent and cohesive. Classes are approachable for beginners, while also providing game changing details that still shock black belts with their simplicity and efficacy. Safety and cleanliness are paramount here. The facilities and mats are always clean. Training partners are helpful and respectful. The culture is excellent and the academy has something to offer for everyone. Uflacker Academy is an excellent choice whether the motivation is fitness, self defense, confidence, fun, or competition. There is a strong emphasis on self defense here, as well as standup/takedowns. This makes the academy a premier choice for law enforcement, veterans, security, and women. There is a strong population of women that train here across all experience levels, including many spouses and families. Truly approachable and welcoming for anyone. Lastly, I have to mention the kids program. My daughter (3.5 years old) has been going for a month now. I am blown away by the quality of the program. They are phenomenal with the kids, providing a great balance of fun, discipline, confidence, and technique.

I have been training at this academy for a number of years now and there are many reasons that this school stands out over the others. First, the world class instruction that comes from the head instructor Professor Christian and his coaches. They are very knowledgeable in the art of jiu-jitsu and demonstrate patience when teaching their students, allowing each student to develop the skills at their own pace. Secondly, aside from the jiu-jitsu techniques that are taught, there is a self-defense component integrated into each class designed to help students in dealing with those unforeseen situations they may encounter in day to day life. In terms of the facility, mats are cleaned after class and the changing rooms are well maintained. An important note to mention is the academy offers classes seven days a week with both day and evening classes for 5 of those 7 days which has worked out great with my busy schedule. For as long as I have been a member of Uflacker Academy, Professor Christian has always advocated for a safe and friendly environment to train.This trait has been passed down to his students which has made this academy such a great place to be a part of for all these years. So for those just starting out or those that have previous experience, Uflacker Academy is definitely a martial arts school worth looking into.

I finally attended the southside mecca for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I came for a drop-in class and was blessed to receive direct instruction from Professor Uflacker himself. His instruction lives up to his impressive monolithic stature. When he talks, you listen. He has imbued his students with the desire to coach as well. I received valuable advice from every student I worked with and left better because of it. This was all my husband's idea. Prior to a conversation with him, I’d never heard the word “jiu-jit-su” - admittedly, I didn’t pronounce it correctly for the first couple of months. I appreciated his interest in signing up our 4 year old son and I agreed to a trial class. My son and I were welcomed with open, genuine arms. When the class ended, the Professor and I chatted -I was honest in my lack of prior knowledge. She explained it over and over and over again. And when I still didn’t understand - she modeled the movements and their purpose, with me as her training partner. She explained how the purpose is solely to protect yourself - not to injure others. I immediately became invested. The mentality of being able to protect yourself, while not injuring others is a mentality that has the potential to change communities. Professionally, I evaluate educators at a state-wide level. I can say, with absolute certainty, the instructors at Uflacker Academy are highly skilled in delivering lessons, building relationships with all students, encouraging partnership and team building, and holding students accountable for their individual growth and development . The instructor team is diverse in their strengths, each of them stacked with a unique & valuable skillset. The 3-5 year old class offered here has influenced our son's life in only positive ways.

I have been a life long martial artist in a family that owns a Taekwondo business. I started off in Taekwondo from the age of 3 and grew up strictly practicing only TKD competitively all around the world. Martial arts has ALWAYS been in my life. As I got older and started to teach more than train, I needed to find a new outlet with my time that my body and mind was already accustomed to without stepping away from Martial arts. Skip to the age of 25, I was already friends with one of the professors at Uflacker named Professor Marcos Estrada JR. We one day had a conversation over social media about me helping him understand the striking aspect from a taekwondo standpoint for one of his upcoming fights. I agreed without hesitation. The only stipulation was that he show me what this “Jiujitsu” thing was that everyone in the UFC was talking about. He agreed and we met one Sunday at my family’s academy to train. After going over the striking we agreed I was going to help with, Professor Estrada tells me to get on the ground and he proceeded to mount me and said “get me off of you”….. me thinking I’ve done martial arts my whole life, and training as heavily as I did…. This should be easy! I quickly learned that all the extensive training I had done up to that moment, meant absolutely nothing the moment someone is on top of you with the knowledge of how to keep you there. And that’s where I was hooked. I NEEDED to learn everything about this art and I needed to teach my children this to protect themselves in the chaotic world we live in. Immediately after our training session that Sunday, I went that Monday to sign up and have been there ever since without looking back. I have zero regrets to choosing Uflacker as mine and my family’s academy. Professor Christian and all of his staff are true professionals in their craft, their ability to cater to all students no matter their teaching style, and the tried true experience that Professor Christian has, positions you in a training environment around other practitioners that will only level you up. Whether you’re looking to train for exercise and self defense purposes, or you’re looking to compete and truly challenge yourself. The family at the U will support you in achieving all your goals…. I'm so glad I came to this gym. Professor Christian and Professor Marcos are great. The rest of the staff are always helpful too. But it's also the people that train here that make this gym so good. Jitsu is brutal but just about everyone here is down to earth and willing to help you learn and improve your game. THIS IS THE BEST PLACE TO LEARN BJJ. Back in January 2020 I did trial classes at several BJJ schools and this was the only legit “academy” I could find. Since then I have trained here 5 days/week and learned so much more than just BJJ techniques. There are many levels of quality instruction and Professor Christian Uflacker is at the top level. He has a highly disciplined teaching method that is modeled by his black belts and instructors. They are all incredibly knowledgeable and teach the concepts that help you learn to defend yourself by controlling your opponent in a safe way. For those students looking to compete or go harder in training you will always find a training partner to match your intensity. Be assured this place puts the highest priority on respecting your fellow students which definitely makes everyone feel safe to train here. I came here outta curiosity in July 2021, but little did I know back then that it would be one of the best decisions I ever made. I come here regularly, 3-4 times out of the week and the level of attention to detail from the coaches whether it's Coach Marcos, Coach Valentino, Coach Oscar, or Professor Christian is incredible. Beyond the staff, all of the students are welcoming from the casual practitioners to the more advanced students whether they're preparing to compete or just sharing the knowledge they've attained along their journey. My confidence has improved from spending time on the mats, in such a way that I know how to conduct myself and a situation, should it arise for self-defense purposes as well. The vibe and atmosphere is calm, welcoming, professional and most importantly, safe. As a woman in the world, the ability to learn and experience this incredible and empowering martial art in the company of an over-encompassing majority of men and still feel seen and safe is something that is incredibly rare; Uflacker Academy offers just that. I have been training at Uflacker Academy for almost 5 years and I regret not starting earlier. Uflacker Academy provides world-class instruction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Professor Christian, along with the other instructors, are extremely knowledgeable and always provide a positive training atmosphere. The classes are well-organized and are focused on utilizing proper technique. The facility is very spacious and always clean! Whether you are a hobbyist, competitor, or law enforcement this place will fit your needs. Highly recommended!

I have been training at Uflacker Academy for a little over a year now. I was skeptical about joining because it is a mostly male dominated sport, and because it seemed difficult. I took the chance and immediately loved it, even joined after my first class. Professor Christian is very patient, encouraging, and knowledgeable. He is always willing to help! The other coaches are helpful and great at what they do. There are no egos here, and the environment is friendly, comfortable, and professional. The guys and girls all get along, and make each other better. My only regret is not joining sooner. I would definitely recommend to anyone. There’s nothing better than learning from the best!

I have been training at uflacker academy for 4 years, learning self defense and getting a great workout. It has built up my confidence, self-esteem, knowledge and muscle memory. Professors Christian and Sledjana are very knowledgeable and always help out with techniques, form, posture and body mechanic of the gentle art of Jiu Jitsu. I have been training at Uflacker Academy for a little over a year now. On my first day, Professor Sladjana worked with me through my first class and taught me how to do all the drills. There were not always other girls to train with in the class, but Professor Sladjana or Professor Christian would always step in to be my training partner for the class. Coach Kevin and Coach Marcos are great, they are always on the mats helping all the students with their techniques. Everyone at the academy does a really good job to make sure you are comfortable and are able to learn the techniques safely and correctly. All the girls at the academy get along very well and always help to make one another better. Sometimes I do have the opportunity to practice and roll with the guys. At first I was a bit intimidated by the guys, but they are all very friendly, professional, helpful, and fun to roll with. Professor Christian is a great instructor. Many times he has worked closely with me to make sure I can learn the technique correctly. Professor Christian and the coaches also helped me prepare for my first IBJJF tournament in which I placed second. Professor Christian and Coach Marcos were there to coach me through it and were very supportive. I’ve become stronger physically and mentally since I started training. It is intense training, but it’s also so much fun. I’m glad I signed up after my first day.

Before I joined Uflacker Academy I was searching for the best martial arts school in all of LLINOIS and Uflacker Academy popped up. I told my boyfriend I think that I want to join some kind of martial arts and he asked me what kinda of martial arts do you want to join. I told him I don't care what kinda of martial arts I just wanna do something lol. So we both started searching and we found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the best for me. He told me if I wanted to join he would support me and asked me to call but I was so nervous and felt so shy I kept waiting. I finally worked up enough courage to call them and was so glad that the person who answered the phone was really nice!! I kept going and I love it! I love the training I feel so much more confident and comfortable and my professor at Uflacker is so nice and a great teacher I am so so glad he for his guidance and sharing all his knowledge in jiu jitsu!!

As a +5 year student at the academy , I’m grateful to consider this place a second home. It’s the best jiu jitsu academy in the Midwest. The technique is unquestionably top quality, and the environment is uniting. Professor Christian is as legit as they come with a long list of strong credentials. From being a jiu jitsu world champ, fighting professionally, working with/teaching to military and police, as well as having world champs through his school as well. The quality speaks for itself. The Academy does a fantastic job staying organized , clean, structured , and welcoming. As well as caring for the students safety. When theres a new student, they are quickly welcomed and assisted through the class, so that they are as comfortable as possible. Whether it’s a coach , instructor, or even another student, people are quick to offer help. I will always highly recommend this school to any adult and/or kids , looking to learn self defense, jiu jitsu , or even pick up a healthy hobby.

My husband has been going to Uflacker for a few years now and our children have both started within the last 6 months. I, working in healthcare, have been very cautious re: activities and associated cleanliness/safety. Uflacker has done a wonderful job of making sure the kids (and adults) have been safe through this pandemic. I love the class sign-up method online, which is new since COVID and ensures classes are at an appropriate capacity. My kids have gained new confidence and discipline since starting their classes. They are truly excited to get to class and come back to tell us (and show us) what they learned. Most importantly, I love that they are comfortable there, always learning new skills, and feel like a part of the Uflacker family!

Amazing instructors. The children LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I like that they can go every day if they like for one low price. I highly recommend Uflacker Academy for children. Gives them a great workout helps to build confidence and form friendships with kids who have a common interest. I especially like the safety aspect for children. The children wait inside until the instructor sees the parent, only then does she allow the child leave.

After moving last year, I was in search for a great jiu-jitsu school to continue my training. I found it! Christian is an excellent instructor - organized, patient, & extremely knowledgeable. The gym is also spacious with tons of mat space. If you come to train at this school, I promise that you will not regret it. Professor Uflacker grew up on the mats training with the legends of BJJ, so he brings invaluable experience. In addition, the mats are always clean, because they are cleaned as a group after every class. Everyone on the mats are great people. We come from different walks of life and we all bond on mat. Training in a positive atmosphere is one of the most underrated aspect of trying a Martial Art. The Uflacker Academy is without question the best learning environment when it comes to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The classes are structured and corrlated so that you as a student can puzzle together the pieces of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and create your own style and identity. I work in Law Enforcement and having Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is very similar to having Insurance on my personal safety. The Uflacker Academy gives you the canvas to create whatever you want to become through the medium of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We all have different goals, MMA Fighter, Jiu Jitsu competitor, Law Enforcement, or just a simple hobbyist, whatever your desire is the Uflacker Academy will point you in the right direction.

I never write reviews. Not good or bad. But this academy deserves the best review I could give. My husband and sons go here. I started off and then stopped. I recently met Professor Slajana and she encourager me to return to a completely revamped program they’ve created! Let me tell you that this program checks all the boxes. Like everyone else, I’ve been nervous to return to any gym but the program they’ve created allows for full social distancing and the workout of your life. As a healthcare worker, I understand the risks and concede to them. This academy is immaculate. The owners truly take great pride in their art and in their facility. Professor promised me a transformation of my body in just 6 weeks. She was right. I have the energy I had in the best of days....ie.pre-Covid. As a woman, learning Jiujitsu is of course a huge benefit but it’s truly more than that. Thank you sooooo much to professors Christian and Slajana. Your dedication is changing lives.

My son being an only child was extremely shy and hesitant when dealing with other kid. Physically he was very skinny child. Combination of the above effected his confident level not just socially but his ability to perform in front of group. In 2014 I enrolled him to Uflacker Academy based on great word of mouth. It was a miracle to see the changes . His confidence level went through the roof . He became respectful and confident, to a point where he asked me on his own to compete in a tournament . Beside the fact he won because of great teaching . What was I most happy and proud was his confidence and his ability to know what he is truly capable .

We started our three year old daughter in the kids program about three months ago. At first we were nervous that it was too overwhelming for her since she is beyond timid and was even afraid to step onto the mat for weeks. Little by little each Coach Mary and Professor Sladjana made her feel so comfortable and broke through her wall. She now begs to go to class and even received her first stripe promotion a couple weeks back and understands a ton of technical moves already. Best part of class is watching her spar with her classmates. I highly recommend this program if you have littles that need help with their confidence. Thank you Uflacker!

My daughter has been going here for 2 years now. I highly recommend uflacker for your children especially if they are like my daughter. She use to be afraid to talk to anyone but now everyone is her friend. She is more sociable. The coaches work really hard teaching them to respect each other and to be confident. They really care for their students. My daughter is a testimony to it. She use to be scared to go and cried...A LOT.. But now she went from crying and begging me not to take her to class to begging to go more often.

Uflacker Academy is the best school in the Chicago area for training kids in an uplifting environment. The kids and my husband have been going to the school now for over five years and make the drive from the north side of the city each week, it's worth it! We did tons of research prior to joining the school on the background of the professors to make sure we are learning from the best. The lineage is direct from Carlos Gracie Jr. which ensures it is not filtered approach. It is an excellent family friendly environment!

Really like the place. People are nice and friendly, the place is always clean so as the members and the staff. Never walked in and smelled bad. Professor Christian is really passionate at teaching bjj, he is very technical and thorough, he walks around and makes sure everyone is performing the technique correctly. The members are nice I haven’t came across somone coacky and once you tap they let go(no ego participants). One down side is you are committing to a whole year which is not bad but when your schedule changes and go to practice you are still paying for it. Very flexible schedule they offer morning and evening classes which is not available at other schools. You’ll always feel welcomed here and that your part of the team!! Ossss 🤙

Great Place to practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Joining Uflacker Academy has been a life changing decision for me! I was at a stage in life where I was going to a health club to do a combination aerobic/weight workout to try and stay in shape. This kept me in average shape, but I always dreaded doing this boring workout. Now almost nine years later, I'm in the best shape of my life. Will have to give it some more time, but first impression is there are too many students for the kids classes which leaves instruction scarce. They need to limit the number of kids. The huge mat is already full so adding more instructors would hurt too. Too many times there are kids doing things completely wrong with little or no correction that I want to yell at them to do it correctly. I'm sure the instructor's hearts are in the right place but the amount of kids is getting out of hand. Have to add I like Nick instructing rather than Christian. He is much firmer with the students and much easier to hear.

Pros: - Their new location is quite nice with good, clean mat space and a medium parking lot (which is way better than most other Chicago BJJ schools which have NO parking at all). The regular instructor is absolutely fantastic but does not teach Sundays typically. Their locker rooms are always clean, but not actually "locker rooms" - more changing rooms (just empty rooms with a few shelves). No showers, but again that's pretty common for BJJ schools in Chicago. They do have a gun locker between the men's and women's changing rooms, which was weird to see at first but there are law enforcement personnel who train here as well so it makes sense. Cons: - They don't accept phone cancellations so be prepared to go in person to do so. They've snuck a 30 day notice into their cancellation so be sure to cancel MORE than a month before your plan ends or you'll be charged for an extra month (>$130) and it will take a series of back and forth phone calls to get it refunded (a fellow training partner who cancelled STILL hasn't received his refund over a month later). **Update - been about a year now and two other students NEVER received their refund. Will finally get to restart training next week and it will not be at this gym because of this.**
