My child loves going to Tristar! He looks forward to going to every class and always asks when his next karate class is. Tristar doesn’t only just teach martial arts, they also teach children important life lessons and how to deal with difficult situations. We experienced this first hand as my child had to deal with a bully at school but with the training from Tristar, was able to handle the situation positively. More than a dojo! Both of my children have tremendously benefitted over the past almost 5 years from the lessons and structure provided at Tristar despite being at different stages with different goals. One is gaining self-defense skills and confidence while the other is improving self-discipline and focus. Both are engaged every class while having fun and looking forward to earning their black belts. Tristar teaches physical and mental fitness while stressing integrity, responsibility, awareness, respect, accountability and adherence to a code of conduct. Shidoshi and Mrs. Offutt genuinely care about each student, providing personalized guidance both in and out of class. They set the tone for the entire dojo, and it shows. Sensei Aldridge and Sensei Howe are dedicated to and focused on age appropriate ways of explaining complex topics and techniques, but ALL of the instructors are terrific. Tristar is more than a dojo, it's a community we are proud to be a part of.

Tristar has not only built an outstanding place where children can learn and grow in their Martial Art skills, they have built a safe place full of love, inclusion and somewhere that feels like an extension of family. The environment is positive and encouraging. The instructors are excellent role models for the kids. The training at Tristar is not just self defense, but also the mental aspects of Martial Arts that help build your character and help you improve as a person. 2025 Update: Unfortunately, I moved several years ago due to work and was unable to continue to train at Tristar. I have tried many different Dojos and nothing I have found compares to Tristar. The training environment, the quality of the instructors, and the intensity of the students is unmatched everywhere else I have tried. If you have the opportunity to train there, you are truly blessed.

If you have not been in with a child. Or even have a thought to try this out yourself do it. I can’t express the dedication that not only shines through the children but the team of martial art professionals. You can tell from the moment your greeted at the beginning and end of class that you are truly part of a family. As any family they prove through knowledge, experience, pictures, videos and generally in person love, support, encouragement, motivation, morales, well being, security , compassion, strength beyond super powers, devotion to oneself, others and most importantly you or child(s) attatched to the program or outreach programs the same dedication. They should all be very proud of themselves for showing up, standing out, practice what is being tought and showcase hunger and desires for much more then we all knew can happen with a TEAM of true professionals. It’s not seen in too many places. They are the right amount in 30 minute sessions of teach, train, stern/firm, encourage, and have fun. What my child has achieved in this program can not be described in this testimony alone. More pages would have to be written. All I can say is thank you for providing our child with oppurtunities to practice being the best version of himself while learning the martial art. The confidence and self esteem he can proudly exhibit has come from all of you. We are thoroughly impressed with Tristar Martial Arts. My son began training here, and after observing from the audience for just a few months, my daughter was eager to join as well. She began as soon as she turned four, and both children now look forward to attending each week. The instructors at Tristar emphasize discipline and consistently integrate safety discussions into each class, helping students develop valuable life skills both inside and outside the Dojo. When I raised a concern about my daughter’s reaction to a particular game, the instructors responded promptly and took steps to ensure she felt comfortable. The next time the game was played, she participated with confidence and pride. My twin 10 year old boys joined Tristar Martial Arts of Mount Airy over the summer on a new member promotion. As parents, we were looking to get them some exercise and hoping it would help with focus and be a fun, but disciplined learning experience. They've done other activities, sports, and summer camps, but were never required to participate or encouraged to try hard to reach a goal. Coaches/Instructors never challenged them if they didn't want to participate or preferred to "goof off" versus follow instructions. Tristar Martial Arts of Mount Airy was, thankfully, the complete opposite and was even more than my husband and I could have ever imagined. In their very first class, they received 1:1 attention from the owner who was also teaching them the "rules". They were provided with a folder and worksheets with steps toward their next goal (belt). They were told it was THEIR responsibility to bring the folder to each class and to be prepared to test on a skill every 2-3 classes. Small, achievable goals gave them the encouragement to push forward even if they thought something was hard. The instructors are amazing - friendly and great with kids, but they also hold their students accountable, demand respect and give respect in return. The family atmosphere of the dojo makes each student feel important and that they truly are part of a community. This is the environment my kids NEED to grow and thrive and guess what - they WANT to be there : ) I can't wait to see the pride on their faces when they get their black belts one day. And because of the energy, caring and support of the team at Tristar; I know they will. Thank you all!!

Tristar Martial Arts is the best place to bring your family for martial arts training! Our daughter started when she was 5 years old. She was (and still is) an “Energizer bunny” but she had no positive outlet for her energy and enthusiasm. Tristar provided her with a great foundation where she learned respect, discipline, and how to study for “stripe” tests working towards a new belt. She has learned many Japanese terms and her practice has expanded her horizons for life. Tristar works hard to make sure there are multiple instructors for each class so that every student gets plenty of help and attention. They offer numerous classes per week for each level so your family can choose the two that work best for your schedule. I have been impressed throughout our time with Tristar and would highly recommend them!

Our son loves Tristar martial arts, and so do we! They have a wonderful program, structured and fun. The Offetts own the facility and live and breathe what they teach. They are very nice people! My son asked to join Tristar Mt Airy after speaking with some of his friends at school. It has been the best place for him these last 3 years. He struggles with ADHD, emotional control and anxiety. After Sensai Chambers and the other instructors convinced him it was ok to go out and train, the dojo became one of his safe spaces. His confidence there is incredible and he always leaves the mat happy no matter how off he was when he started. He is on track to get his black belt in April 2023. Tristar also has the one summer camp where I don’t have to worry about what might happen to get my son upset. The instructors are absolutely the best at making sure the kids have fun while being respectful to each other. It’s even a great place for adults to get off the couch and start training, no matter what age you are. 1 year, 3 months and counting to my black belt. I never thought that would be an achievable goal for me. I highly recommend Tristar and the terrific staff who work there.

I honestly can’t say enough about this amazing dojo. They are the best of the best! It is hands down one of the most positive, respectful and encouraging environments I’ve ever been in. Alan, Maddi and myself all train there together! Parents, you can train along side your children! How cool is that! The teachers and assistants excel at making each individual feel confident and special, while pushing them out of their comfort zones and pushing them to do their very best. He started in 2014 at the age of 7 and trained all the way to second degree black belt (and an extra year). You could say they helped to raise him. :) I may have shed some tears at his last belt promotion as this chapter of our lives has come to a close. When my son was in kindergarten, a kid on the bus started picking on him. I knew I needed to enroll him some kind of program so that he could learn how to defend himself. If you are looking for a quality martial arts school for yourself and/or for your child, you have found it! The atmosphere at Tristar Martial Arts is so overwhelmingly positive. My daughter and I trained together for almost four years, and we earned our first degree black belts. We would do that again in a heartbeat. Our grandson started with Tristar almost 4 years ago. After just a few months he decided to go all the way to his black belt and joined the Black Belt Champions program. In just a few week he will get his Black Belt and asked us to sign him up for Black Belt Champions again - this time for his 2nd Degree Black Belt. The program is really strong on teaching responsibility, courtesy and commitment and not just Martial Arts. All of the staff are incredibly committed to teaching the kids so much more that just the various karate moves & techniques - they teach the kids to be good men & women

My son started here with a 2-week free trial when he was 4 years old. He now 14 and is about to get his 2nd degree black belt. It is so much more than learning how to kick and punch. The one thing that sold me completely was when the Ninja Kids sit down and have a small lesson in the middle of their class. They talk about things like What is a Stranger? What is 911? How to Address Others and Be Polite. This is a great group of people who work wonderfully with children. I recommend them 100%. this is a place where community is still alive and you and your child will feel safe and welcome.

After a short free trail period, we were so impressed with the program and our son's progress at Tristar, that we decided to sign him up for the year. We soon after that committed him to the 3-4 year program "Black Belt Champions". The instructors at Tristar are very dedicated to all of the students, new, young, old, and at all levels. The multiple instructors in the classroom insure that all students are watched and instructed carefully. They put extra effort into recognizing achievements, and spend time focusing on areas such as respect, integrity, effort, and other positive character development. The entire atmosphere is very positive, and they encourage 100% effort. We especially like the flexible schedule, which allows you to pick various nights to attend class, as long as you fulfill your two night a week obligation. We are enjoying and looking forward to watching our son's development as he progresses towards his black belt, under the outstanding tutelage at Tristar.

Tristar is an outstanding place to train the martial arts. All of the instructors are top notch and they make the training a lot of fun. They all are very knowledgeable so no matter who is teaching your class, you’re going to get a workout and you’re going to learn something new. I’ve been training there with my kids for about five years and I wouldn’t consider going anywhere else. It’s good for them, it’s good for me, and we always feel great after a class.

Tristar Martial Arts has been an excellent place for my boys to grow. They've learned how to better control both themselves and protected themselves and others from whatever may be going on around them. They've been training at Tristar for over a combined 12 years and have commitmented to many more. The staff are great and work with each child where they are.

My kids joined TriStar six months ago and our experience has been nothing short of extraordinary. The staff is engaging and dedicated to make the students feel welcome and part of the group. Themes of respect, accountability, and positive encouragement are displayed and enforced uniformly by the staff. Opportunities to give back to the community and demonstrate kindness to others are made available for students to experience and embrace. In these six months I have seen incredible personal growth in my kids and TriStar has been without a doubt a main contributor to my kids newly gpu d confidence, discipline, and change in attitude. Absolutely the best martial arts school in the area! My granddaughter has been coming here since she was almost4 years old and she is now 11 and earned her black belt last fall. She’s sticking with it. While there are dozens of martial arts schools closer to where we live, we chose TriStar for the curriculum and their staff. This is more than a school to us - it’s a family.

As my 10 year old would say, "Tristar is amazing!' My older two kids started training at Tristar 5 years ago. Since then I have started training and so has my youngest. It is a very positive environment for all of us to be around. The instructors love what they are doing and it shows!! The kids love to go and they learn self-discipline, respect, courtesy, etc. It been a great way for me to be involved with my kids in an activity that we can enjoy and learn together.

My 2 children and I began training at Tristar's Mount Airy Dojo almost 2 years ago. We began with a 2 month summer program membership and were hooked by the second class. In addition to learning martial arts, my children have gained self discipline, respect, and healthy lifestyle habits. I've increased my physical fitness level and gained the confidence to know I can defend myself and protect my children. The Tristar family is amazing ~ the instructors prove day in and day out what commitment and dedication they have to teaching the art of Taijutsu to students, both young and old. It is a joy to work side by side with such wonderful people ~ we've made many friends, and as a 'black belt champion', we are dedicated to earning our black belts. In just two short years, we've advanced to brown belts and we're on our way!! Thank you TRISTAR!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am editing this post, several years after creating it. My children and I earned our black belts in May of 2014 and my kids are over halfway to their 2nd degree black belt! My thoughts remain the same...Tristar is the best Martial Arts studio around - hands down!!!

Tristar Martial Arts is the absolute BEST. The staff and instructors are wonderful, caring and genuinely invested in every student. I have 2 kids that have trained there since the age of 4, and as a mom, it feels great knowing my kids are learning skills, physically and mentally, that will help them for the rest of their life! Not only in self defense, but how to be a good person, have confidence, self-discipline, respect... and for the little ones, every class they address stranger danger and how to deal with bullies, which is so important! My kids are always are excited to go! Once my daughter moved into the basic class I decided to join her in training. Its been great to be able to do this alongside both my kids. I wish I could give more than 5 stars!! Tristar Martial Arts in Mt. Airy is fantastic. Taking classes here has been a wonderful experience for our daughter. The Mt. Airy Dojo has a fun, exciting, family-like atmosphere where the students are encouraged to work hard and realize their fullest potential. The results are amazing - increased confidence, respect for oneself and others, being a part of a team, and realizing the importance of hard work and dedication. The instructors are all very dedicated and really make an effort to help everyone succeed! I started my son in training at Tristar when he started Kindergarten, hoping to help him build confidence and focus in school. Within six months, I signed up two of my daughters, as well as myself. My children are taught not only how to defend their selves, but how to avoid confrontations in the first place, and how to be role models for others. I have truly enjoyed watching them grow over the last two and a half years, and I am so glad to be learning with them. Our 8yr old grandson loves going to his classes. I'm very impressed with the way they include his school and parent in virtually all aspects of his training. His promotion from 1 belt to another is obviously dependent on his skills but also the reports from his teachers on not just academic progress but his demonstration of respect and his focus on behavior and interactions with others. I like that they don't participate in competitions but rather just focus on the self development of our grandson. There are always 4 or 5 instructors working with the student 1 on 1 to advise and show them proper technique. I simply can't say enough good about ALL of the staff.

Tristar is an outstanding Martial Arts School. My son and I have been training together there for a little over 2 years. The instructors, staff and volunteers all give 110%. The schools philosophy is more than just learning the techniques. It encompasses both the physical and mental regimes of being a student of the martial arts. My daughter started training at age 9 and just received your black belt in the fall. She is continuing to train and I'm about to get my black belt as well. The instructors are encouraging and helpful. I have enjoyed working with all instructors at the dojo but Sensei Offutt really is the heart of the dojo and gives you back what he expects of you. The lessons of self-control, respect, responsibility and perseverance are applied every time we are on the mat. If you are looking for a place to learn and improve yourself then Tristar Martial Arts is the place for you. I along with my 11 and 8 year old have been training for 4 years. My daughter earned her Black belt in November 2015 and I will soon be earning mine. The instructors are very helpful and will spend one on one time to help you develop skills that go beyond the dojo. Chief Instructor Sensei Offutt is passionate about his teaching and you can feel the sense of pride he takes in his craft. Self Defense, focus, and perseverance are taught to improve you. They also teach your children about bullying and how to handle situitions that they may find theselves in. I usually do not write reviews but when it's about your family and it's improvement it's a must. Give your family or yourself a try and you will not be disappointed.

This is a great martial arts school. Structured and fun at the same time. Every day the classes are changed up so that things don't become boring or routine. The instructors do a great job of keeping class interesting and lighthearted while the volunteers help students improve their techniques. The minute I walked into Tristar I felt right at home. Everyone there is friendly and welcoming. The instructors and staff are very knowledgeable. What they teach makes sense. Not only do they teach martial arts they are a positive influence.The staff went above and beyond to help me reach a personal goal. I had thought that I had failed to reach the goal, but they helped me to turn it around and meet that goal. No matter how I feel when I enter Tristar I always leave feeling like I have learned something new and am ready to face life's challenges again.

We went to 2/8 lessons of a trial program that was in part a fundraiser for a public school. The kids got an introductory lesson where they showed all of their listening and self-control challenges and received an outfit. They went to two classes and earned their red stripes. No one pulled me aside, sent a message, or indicated this may not be a good fit in any way. The evening of the second lesson, we received a message from one of the owners dismissing my kids from the program for not listening and lack of self control. Yes, they need to work on these skills, as do many of the other kids in the class. I do wonder how they pick which kids they want to work with, because there were many who spoke out of turn, fidgeted, didn't get an instructor's joke, or didn't understand the instructions, someetimes long-winded instructions. It was an unexpected and disappointing end to our experience with Tristar. I do not believe they intend to mislead people about their capacity or desire to nurture children of all abilities, as they certainly advertise this way. However, the way they choose to deal with you, or not, really contradicts the professionalism and stewardship you would otherwise come away with in participating in their programs. I cannot recommend this program to anyone without perfectly behaved children, or with any degree of neurodivergence.
