I started Jiu Jitsu at age 38, with trials at a few local gyms before I landed at Shonen. Easily the best decision I could have made! The combination of a brilliant professor and amazing training partners makes this gym really special.

The kids classes are absolutely amazing. The coaches are very patient and kind. My husband joined the adult classes and is having a great time. Highly recommend Shonen to anyone thinking about jiu jitsu for themselves or their kids.

What a gem! We went to several jiu jitsu academies, and this one is the perfect fit. The clean contemporary environment is welcoming to both high level athletes and those looking to try a new and exciting form of exercise. Parents who are looking for their kids to learn self-defense, physical skills and strength, and social and emotional wellbeing need look no further. I wish I would have started my daughter even earlier. I have watched her mature and grow in ways she never would have without learning this martial art. She now attends adult beginner and advanced class. The classes are perfectly balanced with adults of all ages, abilities and skill levels. Professor Lee maintains a learning environment that is respectful and safe. He gives clear direction and is always open to questions. His passion for the jiu jitsu is evident immediately.

Just had my first lesson. It's a welcoming environment to new students. Everyone that I rolled with took the time to go through the moves. Professor Lee explained everything very clearly while demonstrating and providing feedback throughout the lesson. Looking forward to my next lesson.

Best decision we've made for our daughters! Im beyond impressed with what Shonen Jiu-Jitsu has brought out in my daughters and I strongly encourage you to bring your children to train at Shonen as well. My 10 year old has a quiet temperament. She's very shy and timid but ever since she started training at Shonen she definitely gained confidence and became more secure. My husband and I wanted her to train so she can protect herself from bullies but we actually got more than we expected. She became a little more assertive and she is not afraid to advocate for herself. She wants to continue to learn the art and improve in all her techniques. My 5 year old on the other hand absolutely loves the fun environment at Shonen. She was so proud of herself when she recieved her first stripe. Being in an active and controlled environment with children her age definitely develops discipline and self-control. All the coaches have their 100% focus on the children. The mat is always deep cleaned and sanitized right before the children's class, and this is a BIG plus for me. 😅

We started at Shonen knowing NOTHING about it, just searching in the area for an activity for our 4 year old son. Our first visit we felt so welcomed by every staff and parent, there was no question that we would enroll him. Very soon after, our 6 year old daughter wanted to join in on the fun. The instructors at Shonen are the best part - they are truly exceptional, they constantly demonstrate an incredible level of expertise and a genuine passion for teaching kids of all age groups. They manage to strike the perfect balance between discipline and fun, making each class not only educational but also a source of joy for the kids. I highly recommend Shonen to any parent looking for a top-notch physical activity for their children. The combination of excellent instructors, a family-friendly atmosphere, flexibility with other sports schedules, and the genuine enthusiasm from the kids make this academy a standout choice in the world of jiu-jitsu for kids.

Absolutely recomend visiting if you are even considering the sport. I stopped training around 2016 and wanted to get back into grappling. I've trained for half a year here and I feel I am progressing significantly faster then I did in the past. Clean facility, great training partners and excellent instruction.

I recently moved to the area from New York, where I developed a passion for Jiu Jitsu. Having trained for over 2 years already at a gym that I loved, I had a clear idea of the gym culture I was seeking. Shonen Jiu Jitsu was the furthest academy from me in Bowie, MD that I trialed at however after trialing at several gyms it was a no brainer. What really set Shonen apart for me is Professor Lee's style of instruction. His teachings are detailed and specific, which significantly helps in retaining and applying the techniques. I learned a new guard pass on my first day that I immediately incorporated into my rolls at other trial gyms. The team at Shonen was welcoming and friendly and has an environment that’s perfect for both beginners and seasoned players. The gym itself is very clean and well-maintained which is hard to find in Jiu Jitsu. Additionally, the flexible schedule has been a great fit for my lifestyle, allowing me to consistently train 4-5 times a week. If you're looking for a place that combines high level instruction, a welcoming community, and a healthy training environment, Shonen Jiu Jitsu is the place to be. It's well worth the travel, and I'm excited to continue my Jiu Jitsu journey here.

Shonen Jiujitsu stands out as the best gym, catering to individuals of all levels – from novices to experienced athletes. The quality of instruction is unmatched, with Professor Lee leading the way as the most knowledgeable and supportive instructor. Beyond expertise, the community at Shonen is characterized by remarkable kindness and a warm welcome including an amazing girls group, alongside a clean and well kept environment. In the realm of Jiujitsu, Shonen takes the lead in providing an all-encompassing experience. Whether you're a beginner seeking self-defense skills, an athlete aiming to improve strength and endurance, or someone focused on emotional well-being, Shonen offers a top tier experience. Completely new to Ju Jitsu and am so lucky to have landed at Shonen! After checking out a few gyms in the area, none could beat the fantastic instruction (provided by the one and only Lee Rosenfield), the super clean facility, or the incredibly inviting community that Shonen has to offer. There are so many people of varying skill levels, so if you are considering Shonen, do yourself a favor and stop by - it is the best possible decision you could make :)

If you're looking to start jiu jitsu look no further. From the coaching to the members Shonen is extremely welcoming. I walked in February of 2023 and felt right at home. In a short amount of time Lee has taught me so much to help me better myself in jiu jitsu. I researched a lot of gym in the area before joining and I know without a doubt. I made the right choice with Shonen.

Professor Lee is one the instructors I got my blue belt under back when he was teaching in Baltimore. He is a world beater with S-tier instruction. He received his black belt from the Mendes Brothers (Micheal Jordan’s of the sport). He also was one of their instructors at AOJ before he opened his own school. The techniques I learned from him still win tournaments for me today. He also is easy to talk to with entertaining stories about the Jiujitsu scene. Drop in and see the quality of his students which are stellar. You lucked out if your seeking Jiujitsu in the Glen Burnie area. Image, Art of Jiujitsu level instruction in Glen Burnie. Boggles the mind!

This is the best Jiu Jitsu gym in the area- you won't find a better instructor than Lee Rosenfield. He has fostered an extremely welcoming environment where everyone wants to see you succeed. Drop in to see why we train here.

The instruction at Shonen is superb, and the environment is very welcoming to new students. Everyone is treated with respect and encouragement, and there is zero negative energy on the mats. The facility is also immaculately clean. Details matter, and the attention given to small details here is second to none. VERY articulate instruction for both kids and adults alike. And for the kids classes, the ratio of instructors to kids is amazing. LOTS of individual attention. Learning more about the Mendes brothers and the AOJ approach reveals why Lee is so good at what he does. He is a beast on the mats, yet has a super friendly demeanor. And he’s a fantastic instructor. My own kids have progressed by leaps and bounds in only a few months, and I’m excited to see how their story unfolds. Very happy to be part of the Shonen fam!

This is the best Jiu Jitsu Academy I have ever visited. The coaching is World Class, and basically everyone that trains there is focused on the growth of the whole school, not just themselves. "World Class Gym with Friendly Down to Earth People!" So, around the holidays I ended up in the east coast visiting family and friends. I looked up the closest Jiu Jitsu gym to me and it led me to Shonen Jiu Jitsu. First thing I noticed was the facility is really clean, like surprisingly clean - talking to the owner I guess that one of many things that they are adamant about. Also the owner/professor (instructor) Lee was extremely welcoming and friendly. You can see how the vibe the instructor has trickles down to other people because everyone I met on the mats were equally welcoming as well. There are seasoned competitors, novices, and everyone in between. I didn't sense any ego at all, everyone seem to have the attitude of just getting better, whatever anyone's personal goals may be. Side note, the instructor is also a Mendes Bros black belt, which is pretty prestigious and the instructor is a seasoned competitor in his own right. The lesson he taught was extremely detailed and precise. He is very much open to questions and discussions as well. Technique seems to be heavily emphasized at this gym. I would recommend Shonen Jiu Jitsu to anyone that is interested in Jiu Jitsu. If you want top quality instruction with a down to earth vibe, this is the place for you.
