Professor Omar has added greatly to my life, not only through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but through the example he has set as a teacher, leader, and representative of the Marcus Soares / Carlson Gracie Team. I first met Professor Omar in 2000, and since that time he has been an important part of my journey. His guidance, knowledge, and example have helped shape not only my understanding of Jiu-Jitsu, but also my growth as a person, instructor, and student. Professor Omar has been an inspiration to so many of us who have been part of the Marcus Soares and Carlson Gracie lineage. His commitment to the art, his loyalty to his Professor, and his dedication to helping others grow are qualities that continue to stand out. I have strong respect for the role Professor Omar has had in my life. He is one of the main reasons I became a direct student of our Grandmestre Marcus Soares, and for that I will always be grateful. We will continue this journey together for many more years to come. Highly respected and highly recommended.

I joined this academy 3.5 years ago as a blue belt. The quality of training at this academy very high. Professor Omar is extremely knowledgeable, technical and very attentive to his students. In addition, there are many black belts that train at this gym, and all of them are very high level and are willing to share their knowledge. The environment is very friendly, fun, and welcoming for new students.

lengthy review here: Myself and my 5yo son are only 3 weeks in at this gym: I am absolutely blown away with how positive our experiences have been so far. Several things I'll mention: 1] Prof. Omar and Beverley are so good at making newcomers feel welcomed and that they belong here. They are actually very good at consistently praising and rewarding the kids. 2] Occasionally Prof. Omar isn't in class because he's supporting his students at competitions. During my son's class, Beverley stepped in to help out, saw my son struggling with a break fall, and spent a solid 3-5mins with him to help him get it right. Not only do they take supervisor coverage seriously (shows professionalism e.g. consistency with delivering their service), I was also very touched that she took care of my son and gave him the extra time and attention he needed. 3] The atmosphere in the viewing area among the parents (during the kid class) is really good. They talk to each other. I've only been there 3x (my son goes once per week) and I already feel like one of the regulars because of how warm and friendly the parents are. One of them told me last week that during competitions the parents actually wait for all the kids to finish, then they sometimes all go out for dinner together. That is a very strong culture that I'm hoping to be part of soon. 4] Prof. Omar has already made multiple gestures to me that shows he cares about us. Due to juggling financial constraints I couldn't get a Gi straight away. He proactively loaned one to me. I'm very analytical and inquisitive by nature, so sometimes I have a few technical questions for him after class. I felt bad one night because the intermediate class was starting and he had to go, so I tried to end the conversation, but he encouraged me to continue and ask as many questions as I wanted. And he didn't make me feel bad about it - he treated me like I was his priority (you can tell he really lives and breathes jiu jitsu). I really appreciated that. 5] You don't get to chat with everybody since we're drilling for 95% of the class, so each class you'll mostly be chatting to your partner (unless you change partners mid-class). But of the 5-6 people I've met so far, they're all very friendly, very approachable, helpful and supportive (they give me real-time feedback as we drill on mistakes I'm making and tips to make my movements more effective). So if you're looking to make friends, I highly recommend you choose a different partner each class. Socializing aside, its also better you do this because you'll gain more experience with different body types and sizes, which will help you understand what techniques your body can and can't do very well (depending on the size differential between you and your partner). Happy rolling! See you there!

Very good BJJ school. Professor Omar is an excellent instructor and he really sets the tone for the other instructors as well - firm & demanding, but also encouraging and supportive. Would definitely recommend. The only reason we stopped going is because we moved - we're hoping to find as good a school at our new place of residence. If we were to return to the GTA and our son still wanted to continue, would enrol him here again.

My first and only academy for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Professor Salvosa is an amazing instructor that relies on his technique rather than natural abilities for effective Jiu Jitsu. His coaching/teaching is both encouraging & motivating, helping me win multiple tournaments throughout the years of my training under him. Not only has this academy helped me develop my martial arts skillset but has shaped me into a better person off the mats. If you are in the Scarborough area looking for legitimate BJJ, SalvosaBjj is the place!
