Great gym and coaches. Great group of ladies to train with! Come train ladies!
Update: I've been here for 4 years now. I love the people and the atmosphere. The culture is first class. My son has also been training here for about two and a half years. He started as a very soft, quiet and passive 8-year-old. Now he's become an outgoing, very tough and confident 10-year-old who I know has the skills to protect himself at school if the situation comes up. It's completely changed the kid. It's a very safe training environment for adults and kids. We really appreciate this place.
I was in Tulsa for a business trip the week of July 28th and decided to do a $20 drop in class on July 31st. Everyone at Primate Jiu Jitsu were super friendly and welcoming, the instructors were on point teaching the class, and overall I had a great time. Great jiu jitsu gym and friendly welcoming environment for out of town visitors.
Stopped in for open mat. Nice facility, lots of good training partners. Everyone was friendly and welcoming.
I absolutely love Primate Jiu Jitsu in Tulsa Oklahoma! The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. They have multiple showers and bathrooms along with a play area for the little ones to stay entertained while mom/dad train. The facility is clean and well-maintained, and the class schedule offers a variety of options for training. If you are in the area I highly recommend them! If you have children they also offer a kids program!! Whether you are looking to learn self-defense, boxing, Muay Thai, sport Jiu Jitsu or simply get in shape primate Jiu Jitsu is the place to go.
I see why this place has such an unusually high rating. You never know what you’re going to get when you travel to different gyms, but everyone here was really fun to roll with. Plenty of mat space and zero ego, a really healthy environment to learn jiu jitsu without getting burnt out or injured.
Great instruction, friendly environment and clean mats. Friendly to visitors from out of town.
I started about 3 months ago. Thanks to the coaches and training partners I have made big progress. The coaches are very knowledgeable and they will take their time to walk you through any techniques.
This place is amazing! I have to travel for work many times and can’t do daily classes. But with the single class price it makes it possible for me to learn whenever my schedule allows. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking.
I started BJJ recently, and have been so surprised by how quickly this gym’s coaches, athletes, and culture have become a key part of my life. I have had zero Jiu Jitsu training in the past, so I was nervous that I would not be welcome. However, every single person I have trained with at Primate has been nothing but supportive and helpful, and the coaches are attentive and over all phenomenal athletes and human beings. This sport is incredible, and I can see myself becoming more physically and mentally tough the more I train. This is only possible in an environment that challenges you without breaking you, and I have found that at Primate. If you can’t tell, I highly recommend!
I have been to this jiu jitsu place couple times since my boyfriend goes there, and he loves it so much and compliments that Matt is so passionate with teaching jiu jitsu!
Primate BJJ is an incredibly welcoming gym and a great place to learn! The owners are top notch and the class times offered can accommodate even the busiest of schedules. I’d rate them 6 stars if I could! Go train at Primate!
If you wanting to start BJJ, I would recomend Primate. The people at Primate make you feel like family.I started my journey just over 3 years ago with no experience. You learn a skill that develops you physically and mentally.
Primate is an awesome gym! The team makes sure the gym is always super clean, and that it is a safe place for you to learn a new skill. The classes are challenging, but the coaches are very good at making sure you understand everything and are doing things the correct way. Would 10/10 recommend to anyone looking to learn self-defense or just looking for a more exciting way to get some exercise in
I moved to Tulsa from California and was excited&relieved to find Primate Jiu Jitsu, what a great gym!!! The coaches are very knowledgeable, and classes are educational and honestly a lot of fun!
Coach Matt and his team of coaches are very knowledgeable, patient (they need it with me) and genuinely great people. They are very welcoming and make it easy for first timers to try it out. Safe and clean environment for all.
The most welcoming, awesome place to train BJJ. I came in as a complete newbie with zero grappling experience. Not only does the coach make you feel welcome but the entire team is full of great individuals that's truly help you learn. Couldn't ask for a better gym!
Great family run business. Matt and Kendall are a wealth of knowledge in the art of Jiu Jitsu, and provide more than just martial arts training. They teach the importance of discipline and perseverance; skills that benefit you in all aspects of life and in my experience are only taught by the best of coaches. The gym is also a very safe and clean environment and very welcoming to all.
We don’t live nearby but when we are in town we come here. Every single time we’ve been here Kendall makes us feel so welcome . The atmosphere is amazing and they strive to be a positive culture and place to train for all walks of life.
My family and I have been training with Primate for over 3 years. I travel an hour and a half as often as I can with my 6 children to experience the excellent coaching, highly comfortable gym and unique “family feel”. At every level from kids as young as 5 to masters age bracket competition the coaching is pertinent, challenging, supportive and we have all improved in skill and as over all humans. We are “home” at primate and it’s worth all the miles and trials to get there as often as possible!
Love this place! For kids and grownups alike, Primate gives you the skills; learning from the ground up or coming in with some previous knowledge, Primate meets you where you are and builds you up from there. Great attitudes and an even more fabulous community, we haven't found a better place to hone your bjj warrior. All the stars for Primate BJJ!
A great place filled with great people and vibes. plus lots of natural light
Primate is an awesome gym! We go up from OKC to train at every opportunity!! Highly recommend! Kendall is a great coach and roll model for my daughter!
Top tier Oklahoma Jiu jitsu facility and coaching!
Primate is amazing! The training is tough and technical but very safe! Matt & Kendall have created an amazing environment where you are family. My kids and I train and it is our home away from home.
This is a great community. They have wonderful instructors and fantastic students. One of the best places in the state to train!
Love Primate! Matt and Kendall are very dedicated to their community and pour endless love into this space.
Primate is one of the many schools in the 918 that I’m able to very easily boast about. Amazing expansive facility! To me, clean, accommodating, friendly, and motivating atmospheres are what make a Jiu-Jitsu gym great, and Primate embodies those things perfectly! Kendall and Matt are both extremely knowledgeable and their way of teaching makes it easy for anyone to learn, no matter the learning style. Primate is a great place to pick up Jiu-Jitsu & also a great place to cross train if you decide to plant your foot elsewhere! Their Women’s Only class Saturday at 11am is a great first class experience for women that may be intimidated by the thought of being the only woman (which is uncommon at Primate as there is a great women's team, including coach Kendall) in the gym. Their Open Mat Saturday at 12pm is also a great one to go to as a first time visitor! Scrappy rounds and soaking wet rash-guards are the best and that’s definitely what you’ll get! Can’t say enough good things about this gym, it’s one of my favorites in the Tulsa area!!! Check it out!!
One of the best experiences I've had at a gym, ever. The staff is kind, appropriate, and very knowledgeable. My husband trains at Primate and what drew me to try it out was the community he spoke so highly of. I went to a few classes then fell in love with the ladies class. Unfortunately mommyhood/being a small business owner I am choosing to put my time elsewhere but not for a lack of spark of the sport. BJJ is something that is on my mind every day and I will definitely be attending Primate again soon. Primate made me feel safe as a female on the mats and that to me is priceless.
Definitely in my top ten places to train! Matt is a world class black belt and his curriculum is as well.
I was thrilled when I heard Matt Vernon opened up primate jiu jitsu, One of the best instructor in town. Pay attention to every single detail and is able to protrays it in his teaching.
We love Primate! They have the best kids class. Our son started right after his 6th birthday and it has definitely been the best thing for him. We have watched him grow in all areas over the past year and a half and we are so happy with his progress It’s the right combination of martial arts, discipline and life lessons. Matt and Kendall are the best!
Awesome place to train! Coach Matt is very talented in jiu-jitsu and has been for years. His instruction can help anyone at any level.
I join primate about 3 years ago I was full of stress and made about life. During my time at primate I have learned how to control my stress and anxiety, it has made me a better man in everything I do. Thanks professor Matt and Mrs. Kendall for having me. Greatly appreciate it.
We have been bringing our kids here 2-3 times a week for 8 months now. We did a lot of research and felt like Matt Vernon had the best training out of everyone in Tulsa. We couldn’t be happier with our decision. I can’t say enough good things about Primate. Our kids love it and if you come out and try some of their classes for yourself you’ll be able to see first hand how much the coaches pour themselves into what they do. I tell family and friends that coach Matt is the Mr. Rogers of Jiu Jitsu. Here you’re learning more than just a martial art, he talks with the kids every class and teaches valuable lessons giving them the wisdom they need to be kind, successful, well rounded members of society… in addition to some incredible self defense. They’ve earned every one of these 5 stars.
Best thing I ever did in my life, was coming to this gym. If your looking for a fun way to exercise this is the place. Great coaching and training partners. It's clean and awesome place for kids or adults!!
Man there is so much to say on how Primate Jiu Jitsu has changed my life. A lot of men don’t talk about it but it’s done so much for my mental health and my own insecurities I’ve battled throughout life. I feel like I’ve lived inside nothing but comfort zones but once you hit those mats everything you struggle with vanishes. You could of woke up ready to have a bad day or just not feeling very motivated, just come to a class and be around nothing but great people and you’ll forget all about it. I love and appreciate come up stories because like myself I’ve came from a hard life so to hear Coach Matt tell his story about where he was before Jiu Jitsu and to know him now says everything! My Jiu Jitsu journey started because my kid needed something to do while wrestling season was over and it literally took me one week to decide this what I wanna do and this where I wanna train. It’ll be three years for me and my boy in July and it’s only brought us closer as father and son! To see his self confidence be where it’s at now compared to three years ago is one reason I’ll never stop training. Primate has become more like a second home and the people in it have become like family to me. Thank you Primate for all you have done for me and my sons life, I’ll forever be grateful!
This is an amazing place to train. Family friendly, clean, reasonably priced, and the instruction quality is second to none. This should absolutely be your first experience in learning jiu-jitsu.
Great family owned gym that maintains a positive and professional atmosphere. BJJ is great for physical and mental health🙏
Life changing stuff happens at this place. Great people, great teaching, great maintenance and great work out.
This place is amazing. Super inviting atmosphere and excellent coaching.
Matt V. is an incredible instructor. I've only been to one class so far, but I'm in it for the long haul after the one class. I've always mixed up the steps and sides involved in the leg triangle. After one class, I was throwing it up in the free roll. It's a relaxed and welcoming environment. This is not an ego fueled bruiser gym. They are very much about safety and tapping early. My kid has gone here also, and loves it.
Great gym! Super technical, very welcoming.
Best group of people you will ever meet! The coaches are great with the kids and it has done so much to help my son with his confidence! Great, clean facility. I look forward to joining as well!
Cannot put into words what a great place to train this is. Very welcoming members and staff and they cater to the newcomer exceptionally well. My favorite part about this gym is the community of members that attend it, when they say teammates they mean it. Primate also touts very convenient class times throughout the entire week. Love this place.
Thank you guys for allowing me to visit and get some rolls in! Very nice facility, high skill, and kind individuals. Recommend to anybody in the Tulsa area 🤙
I have been coming for 3-4 months and have really enjoyed breaking into the BJJ culture. I especially appreciate the methods of learning compared to some of the others schools I have visited. They spend several weeks or more learning certain moves. This is really helping me. I have also appreciated the laid back atmosphere for new comers.
Great bjj instruction and very welcoming people.
Great place to train. Clean, positive atmosphere and convenient class times.
My first day i walked in nervous as can be, looking back now i thank myself everyday for going to my first class, not only are the coaches great they always keep your safety in mind so you dont have to worry about an unsafe atmosphere. Not only have i learned so much in my short time training, ive gotten in better shape and i always leave class with a smile! Thanks Matt & Jonas
Been training here since January, and I love this gym. Matt is an amazing coach and always is really great about answering questions and willing to help you out. The environment is really cool as well a lot of welcoming people here. Coach Joey, Jonas,Kendall, Allen & Andy are great teachers as well. I highly recommend this gym. One of the best decisions i ever made was to join thanks so much for making learning Jiu Jitsu so much fun.😁👍
Great BJJ academy! I was looking for a place with the same welcoming environment as the school that I trained at in Northern CA and I was happy to find that "vibe" at Primate. Clean facility, professional instructors ...and a shower :)
Started my BJJ journey at Primate with no prior wrestling or fighting background. Coaches Matt and Jonas, and all of the teammates, have made me feel like a part of the Primate family since day 1. I couldn’t imagine a better training atmosphere! Primate’s morning classes are an awesome option that not all gyms offer. I love this place and am excited to continue to learn and grow from the team!
Awesome training and great guys to roll with.
From the moment I walked through the doors everyone was very welcoming and sincere; Coaches Matt and Jonas really care about your safety and progression and take the time to work with you. Great peers as well with vast knowledge and experience from various backgrounds. Primate for life. 💪🏾
Wonderful environment, amazing facilities, great coaches, Amazing people highly recommend for all ages and all levels of ability
The team here is a very accepting group and they do an awesome job of making it a fun and exciting atmosphere. The coach’s work very well with all skill levels and make sure that everyone is getting the best training experience! Highly recommend Primate!
Best place in the mid town Tulsa area. Great instructor and nice people too train with.
I have never been competitive, never really had self esteem, or confidence. From day one, everyone I have met I can consider a true person and a true friend. As far as competitive, I feel like I have grown into wanting to compete, but just by bettering myself, I do not feel the pressure of others being better than me because lets face it, there is always someone better, but I have gained enough respect in the art, that there are many ways you can be completely unique and get by.
Primate is a place where everyone belongs. It doesn't matter what skill level you come in with, whether you are athletic or not, your job, gender, or anything else. Everyone is respectful and is treated with respect. You will work your butt off at Primate and somehow you will love it.
Matt has a TON of great knowledge about BJJ and is an excellent coach. He knows how to teach people in a way that they can understand and apply new techniques. Even more important than that, he has built such a friendly and encouraging atmosphere at the gym that no matter what skill level you are or even if you're just having an off day you can still come in and have a great time rolling with some awesome people.
The gym, the clientele, and the owner/head instructor are all great. Excellent teaching and atmosphere.
Our 9 years old son has been taking classes there for over a year now. Excellent gym, knowledgeable coaches, friendly and clean environment. We could not be happier!
Dropped in from Shreveport La Gatorpit. Primate was quick to welcome me in and all were very polite. Large. Clean. Nice. Great school. Had some fun rolls and met some great folks. Thanks for having me!
I have been training at Primate for over a year now. The gym is full of friendly people of all ages, and I am very happy I joined. I would recommend this place to anyone.
The greatest gym ever and the greatest instructors you could ask for 10/10
Matt Vernon is a great coach with lots of knowledge. He is has a love for the sport that gives him the dedication to constantly improve his game. The gym has a great atmosphere where everyone welcome. Try it you won't regret it!
Great atmosphere that Coach Matt and Kendall have created! I highly recommend you check out this gym!
Matt is a great teacher and great person. Large, clean facility, welcoming environment, and just great people to train with.
Great place to train! Positive, friendly environment and great coach.
Primate BJJ has become a home away from home for me. Easily the best decision I've ever made. Primate is a fun relaxed environment with a very knowledgeable coaching staff. Coach Vernon and everyone there have become more like family than teammates. BJJ doesn't just change you physically but also mentally. I highly recommend giving it a shot and with a free trial week it's a win win.
Primate BJJ is a great place to train, whether you've never been on a mat before or you have years of training under your belt. The owner, Matt, has created a very friendly and welcoming environment for people of all ages and experience- there are no egos. Everybody is there to improve themselves and help others improve along with them. Matt is excellent at teaching, helping you recognize the subtleties in the art and providing hands-on demonstrations/coaching to really help you achieve success. He offers a week of free training, where you can experience BJJ along with other classes, such as muay thai, wrestling, and judo, from friendly and great coaches as well. I highly recommend going there and giving it a try yourself!
Can't say enough about this academy. Friendly environment, knowledgeable instructors, and a great person (Matt Vernon) leading the way. Additionally, Matt offers something most Jujitsu schools do not-early morning classes. For middle age guy with kids such as myself, this was the only time I had to train consistently. Come out and give it a try.
Great place to train! The coach is very encouraging and takes the time to help everyone. The atmosphere is positive; everyone helps each other to get better. I'd never taken any kind of bjj classes before, so it was totally new to me, but I'm glad that didn't stop me from giving it a try. It's a great workout, and every time I go in I'm glad I made it in. That's a credit to the people who train there and the environment Coach Matt has created. Def worth trying a free week.
Look guys, imma letchu all finish, but Primate is the greatest Bjj gym of all time. Seriously though, Matt Vernon is a great coach. He's a straight up ninja on the mats, and his attention to detail when he teaches is legendary! If you have questions, he always does his best to answer them. There are classes for any one, kids or adults, men or women; classes that cater to any experience level, whether novice or professional; and even classes outside of jiu jitsu, like judo, wrestling, and Thai boxing. Plus you get a week to try it ALL for free! So whether you're looking for a hobby, some crazy ninja skills, self-defense, or trying to get in shape, come checkout Primate Bjj.
Whether your training for competition or just looking to loose a few extra pounds, primate is the place for you. This place offers great coaching in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
10/10 for Matt and primate bjj. I was new to the Tulsa area and went to check out Primate bjj. Matt and all the other members were so incredibly welcoming that I signed up that day. It has everything that I look for in a bjj gym, friendly people and top notch instruction. If you're shopping around for a new gym in the Tulsa area I absolutely recommend checking out primate bjj!
Such an amazing group of individuals. Everyone that trains here is dedicated to learning the art, is committed to being the best they can be, and down to earth. The head and assistant instructors are all extremely knowledgeable in all areas of BJJ, and are always willing to demonstrate and explain techniques. They truly care in the progress of their students and teach with a style that is easy to understand (even if the techniques are not always hah) If you're looking to start martial arts, or have ever been interested in. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I cannot recommend enough that you check out Primate BJJ
My whole family trains at Primate BJJ and I can't say enough about how knowledgeable, friendly and talented Coach Matt and the whole team are. Making the decision to train in BJJ has been the best experience for our family. Coach Matt has taught my 12 year old son how to be humble, dedicated and develop confidence in himself. If you are thinking of trying something new, whether it's to get in shape, train to compete or just have a hobby that makes you feel good, Primate BJJ is the best choice!
Matt, the head coach, provides great instruction and the reasoning behind each method. This place is for anyone trying to get into shape, start a new sport and/or learn self defense. Additionally, Primate has a great location and the facility is very clean. I highly recommend it.
One of the best choices I ever made in my life was coming to Primate BJJ and giving Jiu Jitsu a try. I started out by trying the free week of classes and was immediately blown away. Matt is one of the greatest instructors you could ask for, his attention to detail and ability to explain technique is complete wizardry...And Not only is Matt a super friendly and great instructor but the entire Primate class is full of the best men and women you could find who are always encouraging and really bring out the best in everyone who trains there. I could go on an on about the great things about this gym and the encouraging environment but you should come see for yourself! A free week of classes is all you'll need to see how amazing this place really is!
Great gym. Great coach. Great people.
