Love this place and everyone in it. I recently started 5 weeks ago I have learned such so much and had so much fun doing it. The instructors are all so professional and make sure you’re practicing everything safely. 100% recommend this place for everyone.
Posted 2 years agoOur kids have been students for about a month. I am blown away by the amount of one on one attention all the students receive from the professors and coaches . They are all EXCELLENT teachers and mentors. From day one they are learning real defense moves and about respect and friendship. I am thrilled we found PRIMAL JIU JITSU!
Posted 2 years agoI’ve never taken a jiu jitsu class before. I came here with my friend who is a blue belt as an introduction to what jiu jitsu is. We took a class with Ashley and Paulo and it was incredible. I went from knowing absolutely nothing to learning a couple chokes and how to get myself out of a few dangerous situations. I’m looking forward to coming back for more classes. If you’re looking for a gym to join or interested in learning what jiu jitsu is about, give primal a try!
Posted 2 years agoI highly recommend Primal Jiu Jitsu to everyone! Very friendly, fun and loving family! Top notch professors that will teach you great jiu jitsu skills with pride and patience. My 6 year old son was welcomed with open arms and he absolutely loves his coach's Ashley and Marcela 🥰 and also had some classes with the master himself Cassio! THANK YOU TEAM PRIMAL FOR EVERYTHING!!!
Posted 3 years agoTaking women’s only classes allowed me to finally find my love for jujitsu. I feel safe, relaxed, and have so much fun. Ashley is an amazing athlete and an incredible coach! If you’re looking to get into shape, meet wonderful people, gain confidence all while learning to defend yourself, choose Primal Jujitsu.
Posted 3 years agoThis place had a great atmosphere and training! It was my first introduction into the Jiu-Jitsu culture and I felt very welcomed and comfortable as I took my first steps into the world of Jiu-Jitsu. I can't express how much this has positively impacted my day to day life.
I tried out Primal tonight and I have to say, Professor D and Coach Chris have an amazing environment for you you to learn Jiu Jitsu. Being a complete newbie, I was really nervous about trying it out. But they were really patient and helpful! Definitely give this place a try, would definitely recommend it!
Best jiu jitsu gym in San Diego I made a similar Yelp review but here I will share different insights 1) Prof. Dee helps you find your own style and can give you techniques to help complement 2) We often are allowed to ask questions after class about anything technique wise. This is where the majority of the improvement comes from 3) Dee just got new mats and a bigger gym to accommodate more members. 4) Family owned with kids classes and private lessons. Strong sense of community where everyone tries to help you improve. This is actually less common than you would think
Great place to train! I've been training here for about 3 years and couldn't be happier. It is truly a family environment. No egos or people with something to prove. Very welcoming to people from all walks of life, and all skill levels. Professor Davis brings a love and passion for Jui-Jitsu and shares it selflessly. The real joy is watching the changes in the kids. Their confidence both on and off the mats has grown exponentially. No matter what your jiu-jitsu goals, this is a great place to begin your journey.
After training at several BJJ and MMA gyms, I can honestly say that Primal BJJ is the best school I have ever been to. Professor D. Davis is a master of his craft and a natural teacher and leader. From day one you will feel like family. Everyone is welcoming, everyone is helpful, everyone is nice. Each class is taught by a black belt, and on a standard weekday class there may be 5 or more true black belts to roll with, each with a decade or more of experience. If you want to get good at Jiu Jitsu fast, this is the place to be. I can't recommend this school enough.
From the moment I walked in I felt extremely welcomed. Never having trained in any type of grappling before I was unsure of what to expect and a bit nervous. As a result of the kindness of both the professor and his students these nerves were soon replaced by a desire to dive head long into the art. I strongly recommend this gym to anyone interested in Jiu-Jitsu!
I started back in about early June. I've always wanted to learn some type of BJJ or wrestling. I came across Primal when I had moved to San Diego. I walked in and was immediately welcomed with open arms by Professor D. Davis. Its an ego free atmosphere and very family oriented. The coaches are ego free, highly professional, patient, and very knowledgeable. I cant imagine going anywhere else to train. I'm very blessed to have met the men and women that I train with. When I started out, I weighed about 205 pounds now I'm down to 180 pounds. I have learned so much and I cant wait to keep learning more and more. See you guys and gals on the mats! (Raleigh Collins)
I was looking for a place to train while on vacation from the East Coast. The professors were top notch, the students friendly and the gym clean. They addressed holes in my game and taught solid techniques. I couldn't have hoped for a better place to train. I'll definitely be back if I move to the area.
It is a GREAT place, my daughter is 5 years old and within a few weeks she already showed a huge improvement, not only in physical activities but also in her attitude on how to face challenges. Very welcoming and family oriented environment.
Professor D is awesome, very knowledgable and extremely welcoming. The academy is clean, well organized and highly competitive. His students are friendly and offer great training. I highly recommend this academy!
In 2011, I started to find a place to learn BJJ. I selected Primal just because it is close to my house and their professors are still pretty active and compete. I am glad that it turns out great. Primal offers a competitive but friendly environment. Professor D, Jeff, and other assistant coaches are great and care for their students.
Primal has been, and will continue to be one of my greatest training experiences to date. I have trained in several academies and dojos now, and my time here has been nothing short of exceptional. I feel so blessed to be part of such a tight family of amazing people who love to train. Every day I arrive excited to be on the mat, and I leave with a smile looking forward to the next day I am there. The instruction is spot on, there has not been a day I have not learned something integral to my martial arts being here. Everyone trains hard, and trains with great respect, and I am constantly inspired on the mat as well as off by the people I roll with here. I simply love it.
Primal is ma jam. This is the best place to learn UFC in Diego, no joke. They do a lot in that ninja suit, but they do real fighting too.
World class training under an amazing instructor in D. Davis. The gentle art is broken down in easy to learn steps that benefit anyone from beginners to advanced students. After being part of the Primal family for 5 years, I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.
Professor and I have come up the ranks together from White to Black Belt. I am so proud to share my journey with a great competitor. Primal Training Center is one of the elite experts on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in San Diego. I make sure to train there when I come to town.
If you are even thinking about beginning Jiu Jitsu, then you owe it to yourself to visit Primal in Mira Mesa. D Davis is not only a highly-decorated black belt competitor, he is a gifted teacher and mentor. The atmosphere at this academy is one with no egos, no "I have something to prove" types, and one that fosters respect, honor, and heart. The people that train here truly want the best for each other, which is why Primal students "get it" so quickly and develop a strong basic BJJ game in roughly a year. Those that choose to compete have performed admirably, and D leads from the front, always there for his students at the competitions, coaching, encouraging, and supporting them as they go to war on the mats. His students have won at the local level and taken home Pan Am gold medals. More importantly, each and every student has grown and become a better BJJ player AND a better person. The hardest step is that first step through the door. D Davis will make it easier for you, and the Primal academy students will help you realize that this is the place to train in San Diego. A nurturing, fun environment is key during those first couple months when it's all new and you are just starting down the path. The people at this academy will ultimately become your brothers and sisters on your journey. Again: If you are thinking about training, visit Primal Jiu Jitsu. There's no hard sell, there's no egos, there really is nothing to fear - you will be treated with respect. The people here are intelligent, friendly, and highly motivated. I've said my piece. Now it's up to you.
My friend has been training at Primal for a few years and suggested I give it a try. I have to admit I was hesitant at first. I am a shy person who has a hard time making friends. I was also worried as a twenty something girl with no martial arts experience that I would feel uncomfortable in a gym full of testosterone. This was definitely not the case! Everyone is really welcoming and I was not the only woman there. Everyone is respectful and I have never felt uncomfortable training with both the men and women. Professor Davis and all of the coaches are so knowledgeable and always make time for questions. I have been training at Primal for almost a year now and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Training with Primal has affected me both in and out of the gym. I have learned so much while training. The classes are based on technique and precision. I am much more confident as a person and I have Primal to thank. The Primal family is just that…Family. The people at Primal really care and I have made friendships that will last a lifetime. Please give Primal a try. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I've been at this school for five years now, and I am current assistant instructor at Primal BJJ. It's the best martial arts school I've ever attended. Students at Primal BJJ get personalized attention and everyone treats each other with respect. The competition team at Primal BJJ has done very well and encourages those who wish to compete to put it on the line. If you are interested in learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from an extremely knowledgeable blackbelt in a fun, respectful, and clean environment, then it's worth trying out the free trial. It's the safest fun you can have pushing the limits. We are located in the heart of Scripps ranch exit the 15 Fwy Mira Mesa Blvd head east.
I traveled to 5 different Jiu Jitsu gyms in the immediate area looking for a good place for my 4 year old (almost 5) to train. I was looking for a positive environment, with other young kids, that trained good, quality Jiu Jitsu. I didn't want a McDojo to babysit him, or just another activity, I wanted my son to learn a skill and appreciate the journey that Jiu Jitsu is. Within 20 minutes, I knew this was the place. I began my training there the next day. My son and I are hooked. Professor D Davis is a true Jiu Jitsu master. He has proven so in competition time and time again. Even better and more important for the newbie walking through the door is that he is a true teacher. He knows that everyone is different, and meets their learning needs accordingly. Monday and Wednesday night classes are for the fundamentals, Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the advanced classes. there is something for everyone. This gym has the true family atmosphere of a small gym. There are competition athletes, recreational practitioners, soccer moms, and kids that make up the community. All are extremely helpful. If you have an interest in BJJ, come take advantage of Prof. Davis' one month free trial. You won't regret it.
I started training at Primal about 2.5 years ago and I have had a great experience - D is a true professional that truly cares about giving every one of his students the tools that they need to succeed at jiu jitsu. You won't find over sized egos at this gym, as everyone that trains is willing to help out their fellow student and promotes a great team atmosphere. I have never left a class without learning something new, and that speaks volumes about the level of personal instruction that you receive at Primal.
After taking a long hiatus from Jiu Jitsu and moving to Los Angeles I returned to San Diego with an itch to start training. I looked at a couple of places around my community and even reached out and drove up to 20 miles to look for my next training facility. I did do a lot of searching I rolled with many people but never rolled with people like Primal people. It is a different atmosphere; egos are left at the door, and people are willing to help. I noticed the first day that this is the place that i wanted to train. Professor Davis is not only my professor but I am happy to say he is my friend and our leader. He gives myself and the students there, the knowledge and instruction to better our game. Hes always open to suggestions to improve our experience, he treats you like a friend and not a big money sign. I could not see myself train anywhere else.
Primal Training Center is one of the best places to train anywhere! Everyone who trains here is friendly and respectful. Professor D Davis is so knowledgeable and takes the time to help people individually. He knows that different people practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differently and with different goals in mind. Whether you are looking to compete in tournaments or are mostly interested in self-defense, Professor Davis tailors his answers to your body type and style, so that you get the most out of training. This gym is a must-try for anyone who is looking for the genuine article. I feel so lucky to train with these men and women.
Please move your huge truck out of the street that's parked right at the stop sign blocking right turns. I get advertising but is it really necessary to park that huge truck right in the way all the time?? Its a hinderance!!! And WOW WHAT A RESPONSE FROM THE OWNER!! SO PROFESSIONAL!! And probably still parking that truck in the way all the time!! LOL
Do send your kids here the owner was SO RUDE all I asked was how much the classes are because I am single mom working 2 jobs and just want to provide my son with a chance to do something after school and the owner said I am not a good fit for his school because I should have enough money to attend his school and refused to quote me a price
