As a brazilian jiu jitsu white belt who started training at a gym in Florida, moving back home to Davis and joining Nova Geracao (NG), was honestly mind-blowing. At my previous gym, techniques were taught more like a cookie-cutter system where you would learn step by step for one exact situation that doesn't really work in the real world but Professor Michael completely changed how I understand jiu jitsu. Instead of memorizing isolated bjj moves, Michael teaches concepts and explains how a submission or transition can exist across all positions and brazilian jiu jitsu guards, whether you’re in top pressure, open guard, or closed brazilian jiu jitsu guard. A great example where Michael teaches this, is when he breaks down why basic techniques, like the brazilian jiu jitsu arm bar work using real physics, philosophy, and body science...yes, including the exact scientific names of muscles and bones (get ready to learn and remember the names too) which makes everything click at a deeper level. Sometimes it feels like you are drinking out of a fire hose but trust me, having a wealth of information like that will help advance your bjj way quicker. While this approach could feel more intense for whitebelts, it’s exactly what separates simply knowing the levels of brazilian jiu jitsu to truly understanding the art as you progress in your bjj career. Even early on, this mindset has already transformed how I roll and think during live training. Whether your goal is to eventually earn your bjj black belt, join the best martial art for self defense (imo), or get in better shape, NG Davis offers an advanced foundation that will fast-track your growth and set you apart from other jiu jitsu players.
Posted 7 months agoGreat place to train. I have only been to the AM classes. I'm a brown belt who has trained at several academies due to traveling for work. Pros: -Good variety of training partners. AM classes have a couple white belts, couple blue belts, couple purple belts and a couple brown belts. There are a couple of us big guys too, which is nice -Good training atmosphere, no hot heads -AM classes every day of the week -Clean mats -Michael (main instructor) and Gigi are great. Both are very technical and give hands-on instruction. I've been really impressed with the attention to the basics. The instruction is what sold me on staying at NG. Cons: -I don't think there is a shower. Not a problem for most of us that live close by, but might be difficult for someone from out of town who wants to train before work (AM class) -I wish I could get NG patches for my old gis instead of getting new gis I was really apprehensive about leaving my old team but have really been welcomed at NG. I tried a couple of the nearby academies and don't have anything bad to say. I would recommend NG to a newcomer or an upper belt looking for a variety of training partners.
Posted 1 year agoIn August of 2022, I left the following review of Nova Geracao Davis: I was interested in BJJ for my children and I emailed Michael at Nova Geracao to inquire. He replied within a few minutes and offered me and my kids the opportunity to come observe a class. Not only did he spend significant time educating us but he invited the kids to participate and was most welcoming. He was also great with the other kids in the class. You could tell they loved him. So long as the kids are on board, this is for sure our new BJJ gym. Can't wait to start! Here in February of 2025, I am still training ... and so are my 3 kids. Professor Michael Quigley and Nova Geracao Davis are my family now. We're at the gym almost every day. Its such a fun, positive, and challenging environment, and I've learned that jiu jitsu has been and will continue to be an awesome, life-long hobby. To push things further, we're now training Muay Thai in the Striking Class twice per week in addition to regular BJJ classes. Come get on the mats with me!
NG and Michael Quigley teach very fundamentally sound Jiu Jitsu. This is demonstrated in the ability of his students, the blue belts and especially the upper belts have a solid foundation and precise technique garnered from the attention to detail that is given in training. Furthermore, Michael himself is a seasoned competitor who still competes at a high level and comes from an esteemed lineage of BJJ. Personally, training here has definitely improved my BJJ and I look forward to continuing this growth.
In the time that I've spent at Nova Geracao, I can confidently say that the quality of teaching at this academy is one-of-a-kind amongst other schools/gyms that I've practiced at. The environment that Michael provides for his students is incredibly open for beginners, but also vastly more detail-oriented than most for those looking to hone their jiu jitsu game. I would highly recommend Nova Geracao for any level of practitioner that's looking for high-quality jiu jitsu training in the Davis area.
Profesional skills Family orientated environmentall A real Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Master Toco supervision
Nova Geração is undoubtedly the best jiujitsu academy where I've dedicated several years of training. Head instructor Michael Quigley exemplifies an exceptional commitment to detail in every aspect of our practice. His meticulous approach not only refines our techniques but also instills a profound understanding of the art. Michael places a strong emphasis on safety, ensuring that we navigate through jiujitsu scenarios with awareness. The academy feels like a community that fosters growth, not just physically but also mentally. The atmosphere encourages problem-solving on the mat, treating complex situations in jiujitsu as challenges to be methodically addressed. Training at Nova Geração has not only honed my skills but has also created a supportive environment where I feel like I have a second home.
I like their attention to the parents, how they take the time to explain to the children. In my opinion, they have a nice way of working. It's my second day but I recommend it.
The people, the place, and the sensei: all are the best... They helped me way more than just with only Jiu Jitsu. You will train with them not just because you want to learn this amazing technique, but because of them, and that is the best motivation to train.
Very supportive and inclusive community. The owner, Michael, is very knowledgeable and places a strong emphasis on teamwork, safety, and raising all members of the gym up together. From the first day I have felt welcomed and I would recommend to anyone willing to invest the time to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thui.
I have been training under Professor Michael Quigley for 7 months and could not be more thrilled with my experience. Every week I can train as much as I like and always have unrestricted access to ranked belts, including at least 2 black belts. This is a family and every member of that family treats each other with warmness, kindness and respect. Michael provides personal, one-on-one level attention to each member during classes and we focus on the subtleties and micro adjustments needed for success on the mats. I’ve lost weight, put on muscle, gained confidence and skill, and joined a new family I know will be there for my entire BJJ journey. Come train with me!
It's as Jiu-Jitsu as Jiu-Jitsu gets. humbling cultural and exhilarating was my experience with the teacher and classmates
Hands down the best bjj gym you’ll find in Davis, CA
Nova Geração has a great instructor and students who all care about each other’s growth and safety, and they accommodate students of any skill level. I highly recommend NG for quality BJJ instructions and team.
I have 17 years of experience practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Nova Geracao Davis is where I have chosen to continue my training. I came up the belt ranks and received my black belt in a different BJJ lineage. I have also trained at a few different academies over the years. Nova Geracao stands out for being inclusive of students from all walks of life. It is LGBTQ friendly, and welcoming to students of differing athletic ability. Michael (Davis Owner / Head Instructor) is aware that each student will develop their own game based on body type, level of athleticism and personal preference. There is a collaborative atmosphere between students and very little ego on display. The quality of BJJ instruction is world class, with technique refinements and details that I have never seen anywhere. Classes often feel more like seminars rather than an explanation of one or two moves. I can't recommend this academy highly enough.
I started BJJ at Nova Geraçao under Michael Quigley right before the Pandemic hit in 2020. My husband has been training here for about 3 years and this gym has quickly become a place we call family. The community and support here are what keeps us coming back every day. I came from a CrossFit and soccer background and BJJ has provided a new challenge for me mentally and physically as an athlete. I would highly recommend giving Nova Geraçao a try if you are looking for a martial arts gym and a great workout!
My son feels very comfortable and loved... Master Tocco, Luciana and the coaches do an excellent job at teaching guiding and mentoring.
An absolutely excellent gym. The community is caring, respectful, and positive. A few of us went to see a comedy show together in Sacramento, highlighting the coolness of the wonderful people in the community. The gym takes its style directly from Brazil, and I cannot speak highly enough of Michael's passion and obsession for the sport. He has been constantly upgrading the gym, which made it well worth the time and money. Lots of life lessons were, and will be, learned in this gym.
i dont usually leave reviews but this place deserves 5 stars great service i called to get informed about the place and had the most professional and helpful person ever i totally recommend this place for anyone interested in Jiu jitsu
Best BJJ school in town! Great family environment, help my son in every way (mind and body). Master Toco is a legend.
Nova Geracao is not a business in the traditional sense, this is a home for those that choose to make it a home. There is love, compassion, and a genuine concern for one another within those walls. Men and women are able to let go of the outside world and practice Jiu Jitsu in its purest form with Master Toco, whom is arguably one of the greatest men to ever teach this martial art. Lucianna is his right hand, she loves the children and adults as if they are her own family, and puts her heart and soul into every person that enters those doors. You enter Nova Geracao as a student and leave as a family member. Respect, integrity, honor, and discipline are just a few words to describe the atmosphere within the four walls of Nova Geracao. The most amazing result, is that those that leave this school carry a sense of pride and love outside of the school wherever they go, you take this live with you. Nova Geracao is a second home, and it's always calling you back. The competition team fights under the Fight Sports flag and are currently 6 TIME BACK TO BACK champions in the Miami open, with many medals coming from within the Nova Geracao school. Come join us and discover a new you.
Nova Geração is home. My second family! Professor Michael creates an atmosphere where it's easy to learn and grow as a martial artist.
Nova Geração Davis is a special place. I started training here as a white belt with my two sons and 6 years later we're still going strong and the best part is that my wife joined too a few months ago! Professor Michael Quigley is a unique person that really cares about each and every member. The whole atmosphere is family-like. You will get the highest level of instruction from an official IBJJF black belt! Your overall fitness will improve along multiple dimensions: strength, cardio, flexibility, balance. You'll gain confidence and learn to defend yourself against real resistance. If you're the competitive type you'll be challenged every day and you can even test yourself at tournaments and competitions against competitors from other academies. Don't take my word for it, come by and check it out for yourself.
I started training at Nova Geração Davis shortly after enrolling my two kids (8 & 10) over a year ago. The training has been a real positive for both myself and my kids. Their conditioning and general ability in sports have improved quite a bit since starting. BJJ is one of the most physically challenging things I have done; however, it has been rewarding. I enjoy the gym and the fellow students that I train with. Nova Geração Davis been welcoming to all new comers no matter their experience level or age and I highly recommend giving it shot if you are interested.
Felt welcomed by all for a drop in training session. Great rolling partners, good instruction. No egos. Thank you
I've been training at Nova Geração for just over a year and I love it here. The gym is like a second home and family. It has a fun and supportive atmosphere. The instructor Michael is a great coach and teacher. He is able to push people to fulfill their potential as well as explain the details of jiu-jitsu simply, with easy-to-understand metaphors. This gym is great for competitors - the wall of medals demonstrates the program's effectiveness - and those motivated for different reasons: self-defense, self-improvement, or fitness. Training here teaches discipline, respect, confidence, and humility. I know it isn't for everyone, but for someone serious about learning jiu-jitsu, this is the place to train. Plus the music is great. Good for dancing.
I have trained at Nova Geração for nearly two years and it has been one of the most positive experiences of my life. The gym quickly became a second home and the people a second family. Everyone is incredibly respectful and works to see that the team, as a whole, improves. The curriculum is challenging, setting a high standard for all students, and will push you to do your best. On the mats, you will find everyone from world champions to occasional hobbyists, all ready to welcome you to the Nova Geração family.
I had no martial arts background before coming here and quickly fell in love with BJJ. Classes are challenging and you will learn to push yourself. There's a great community of people at this gym, and they all support one another. This place has become a second home to me, and the people here are my family.
Great, serious, and fun BJJ.
This is the worst place to train in whole California. Avoid as much as possible. The coach michael is very arrogant, narcissistic and rude whenever a question is asked in the most humble way, he just wants to flaunt his 17 years of training to boost his big ego. He is not around most of the times and goes for weeks somewhere else. I enrolled for three months after which on the 20th day i got badly injured due to his negligence in warming up everyone, on that day we learnt chokes, there were no warmup drills and then we were asked to roll and i slipped my disc completely. I told him after the class that i need rest and dont want to train but he told me to go to a chiropractor who is connected with him. But i avoided it because that would make my injury even bad as my doctor told me to rest but he kept stressing the chiro. I asked him refund for the 2 complete months left but he completely refused everything. Me being an international student had literally no option but to leave my money and have a broken back. Anyone who wants to train bjj please find another place, as this place is neither the value for money and you might get hurt bad like me because of his negligence in proper drill schedule and warmups, plus noone is watching you roll as he his himself rolling. Noone is there to correct you and you will definitely get injured here because of mere negligence and no one correcting you. Also, i really respected him as a coach but that man doesn't deserve an ounce of respect i gave him as it just boosts his ego and arrogance. If you still want to train here make sure you are warmed up even if he is not making you warm up, take time to warm up by urself if he is not making you do it, then start your rolling sessions and dont trust anyone in a foreign land. My experience is extremely worst from this place and i would recommend noone to train here. There are much better places in davis and even in California.
I've trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for ten years and I've never had a worse experience than I had with Mikey and Nova Geracao in Davis, California. From the moment I walked in the door he was rude, pompous, pushy and condescending. Without permission, he grabbed em from behind by the shoulders and forcibly walked me to the various areas of his academy. He pushed me in front of the sign with the rules and flatly said "read that", he pushed me to the foot washing station and as if he were speaking to a dog said "use that". During training, he constantly complained about arbitrary things like belt tying and constantly interrupted the black belt instructor to insert his own ideas despite being only a purple belt at the time. I've never met a more rude or narcissistic person in the context of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Also, he constantly rants about politics to anyone in his presence and has a long history of disparaging remarks about police officers and military veterans. Also, the price is $300/ a month to train with an out-of-shape, low skilled, non-accomplished bully. The Art of Jiu Jitsu in Santa Barbara is run by two of the most accomplished world champions in the history of the sport and it's $250. The MOST anyone in Sacramento charges for monthly BJJ dues is $150. Please don't train here. This man is a bad person and a poor representative of the art.
