This is not really a review, but a love letter to what was the single best gym experience of my life. Over the past 4 years I trained at N1, ultimately starting muay thai as a complete beginner, barely flexible enough to kick at hip height, to trying out BJJ classes, and taking regular boxing classes. What I found in my time training at N1 was an incredibly kind, positive, and supportive community who encouraged you to challenge yourself and stay consistent, no matter your goals. What makes N1 an incredible gym to train at is the people. Kru Naaron, Kru Grant, Kru Naj, PJ, Paulo, coach Chris, and more are amazing trainers who teach well and meet you where you're at. Want to try out a few sessions or use martial arts training as a fitness class! You're supported with that. See yourself getting competitive and want to break into the amateur fight scene? You'll be welcomed with open arms. N1 has slowly built up a group of awesome amateur fighters in boxing, muay thai, and bjj over the years. As stated, N1 was a great community. Everyone I trained with there was great. There was very little ego and everyone treated each other well, whether during training or sparring. While I sparred very little the impression I got was that sparring is done the Thai way - light, playful, and with learning in mind. And on another note, a very large part of the N1 community were women, which is something awesome to see in the martial arts space. Lots of women's only classes offered alongside coed classes! The gym itself is a smaller space, but that made for much more personal classes. You will never got lost in a big class, and you will always get feedback from your trainers. In summary, whether you're new to martial arts and want to try one out (boxing, muay thai, or BJJ), or a seasoned practitioner, N1 is by far the best gym in Ottawa to look into. You will find classes of all abilities, a growing amateur scene, and amazing trainers. To Naaron, Grant, Chris, Naj, PJ, Paulo, and Curtis - thank you for everything! You made training one of the best experiences ever! Till next time :)
Posted 1 year ago10/10 gym -- as a beginner, I feel super welcomed here, and I'm learning fast. The all-access membership is really the sweet spot since I can join any style of class I want. It has been a great way for me to get fit as well. I lost maybe 20 pounds in 2 months, and I feel great. Looking forward to being able to join the more advanced classes!
Posted 1 year agoMy two kids recently joined N1 after 7 years of Jiu Jitsu at another dojo in town. Since the first day, everyone at N1 has been extremely welcoming and supportive. The kids could not be happier and love the new environment as they feel they are learning a lot. Very thankful to all at the gym.
Posted 1 year agoI have been training here since 2017. I have also been doing martial arts since the age of 5, also taught martial arts for 5 years. This place is by far, the most friendly gym I have trained at, the instructors put you first and the owner isn't there to just have you pay for your progression. They teach very well and will treat you like family.
Posted 3 years agoGood coaches but way too crowded. No space to warm up either. No clear communication about the date of test. Overcrowding is great for business but it feels so congested.
