I've been attending mount maunganui jiu jitsu for 10 years and only have good things to say about it, as a child it was a hobby that kept me happy and now as a teenager it has given me a place to work and earn money and an amazing environment to sharpen my skills for competition. Felipe has been my coach for my entire time here and is genuinely one of the most kind and generous people I have met, this is reflected in how he deals with his customers, whether they are good or bad customers I always see him giving them all the attention and information that they need. If you are looking for a friendly environment with amazing guidance then I would highly recommend this gym.

when I went into Mount Maunganui BJJ I felt welcomed, the level of respect and maturity at the gym is like no other I've tried previous gyms like Te Maru but they do not compare to Mount maunganui BJJ I would really in courage you to give it a go thank you

This is a updated review (on 12 May 2026) - Still 5 Stars all the way. My son had brilliant rugby games since the start of his club rugby season this year. Being at Mount Maunganui JiuJitsu has helped him a ton for him to get all his tackles and ground work in rugby. Since he started Bjj we have seen a massive improvement with his rugby and just his confidence in general. If parents and coaches come to me and complements me on how my son plays rugby, I tell them straight it's because of Bjj. Bjj all the way!! 💪 Special thanks to all the coaches at Mount Maunganui JiuJitsu for helping him. 🙌

Been coming to this gym for several months now, with my wife also. Love Felipe's teaching, he's always happy to help out with anything and is a very talented and passionate coach. Feels like a family here - people are friendly and helpful, great atmosphere and great sparring. Great team of women attending too, and my wife is comfortable even when there's no girls in the gym. She attends morning classes too with Vinni or Snowdon coaching and enjoys their teaching styles! Highly recommend this gym with great coaches and awesome team atmosphere.

Recently, whilst on holidays, I dropped into this gym for a training session, welcomed by coach Felipe and the young star and absolute gentleman Finn. The training was great, students and grapplers respectful and the gym space is sensational, making for all the right things that create the perfect bjj environment. 100% recommend, and I'll be back if I'm ever in the area. 10/10 team.

Very bad vibes, unprofessional and arrogant behavior from coach Felipe. I was made to feel like a bother and not welcomed at all. He was very nice at first, then he completely flipped for no apparent reason at all. And if there was a reason, it was never communicated. Non existent customer service, I approached him to ask to keep communication open and professional, I explained that I didn't appreciate being mistreated like that as a customer. He was arrogant, never apologized and palmed me off like it was all my fault and he couldn't care less. Very bizarre and unpleasant experience for us.

Do not come here if you are a beginner. Came here for a few sessions to try and get into Jiu Jitsu as an adult. This place is not catered at all for beginners. I tried the basics class several times and it was far too advanced and not safe. I wasn’t even told how to land on my back properly or how to my gi and when I asked the instructor Snowden how to I was made to feel like I was bothering him. The instructors and classes are not designed for beginners. The instructor is more interested in grappling with the more advanced students then teaching any fundamentals. Every student there would give contradictory advice and wouldn’t know what we were doing. The classes were far too large for the instructor to teach or critique anything. As a complete beginner I felt like and was made to feel like a burden. There seems to be no place in Tauranga for adults to get into martial arts.
