Their jiu jitsu is legit. A great experience. Great teaching with very clear instructions. One of a kind place! Best martial arts gym experience in the area for sure.
Such an awesome place. Tons of fun and really good people. So many different instructors and high level guys offering help and rolling controlled and safely. The best place for longevity while also gaining super skill level. Everyone there treated me like family.
So much fun. Great place with even better people. Totally would recommend to anyone and everyone of all skill levels. I loved it!
Let’s go BJJ!
LJJ is absolutely incredible! The instructors are highly skilled and also incredibly supportive, making every class welcoming for beginners. The community here is amazing—everyone is friendly, encouraging, and genuinely invested in helping each other grow. The facility is clean and has everything you need to train effectively. I recommend this place to everyone!
Lexington jiujitsu has become my home away from home. I love it there. My classmates have become my friends. My teachers have become my friends. Jeb has something really special in Lexington jiu jitsu. Most BJJ academies these days are sport gyms focused on competing. That’s not what Jeb’s place is about. Some of us compete, and he is very supportive of that, but he doesn’t emphasize competition. He emphasizes learning the skills of jiu jitsu in order to be able to defend yourself in real life. He doesn’t teach in order to win points in a sport, he teaches to make you hard to kill. He also emphasizes safety in order to keep everybody healthy and able to stay on the mat. We don’t try to kill each other at Lexjj, which isn’t always true everywhere one might train. We are working to acquire skill. Jeb and the other instructors leave their egos out of jiu jitsu. This is another thing you can’t necessarily expect just anywhere. Jeb will tell you he wants to make you better than him-that’s his goal. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, and his blue bell ice cream reviews during warm-ups have become the stuff of legend. Jeb’s non jiu jitsu-related commentary in itself is entertaining and is something I find myself looking forward to. His jiu jitsu knowledge and philosophy towards it really resonates with me. I enjoy learning from all the other instructors as well. Ted, Aubrey, Craig, and now Chris as well are all not only super knowledgeable, but they’re fun too. You’re going to have fun while you’re learning. I look forward to seeing each of them for class. They’re going to make you laugh while they’re teaching you and helping you improve. Mike is another black belt that is always around helping everyone to get better. I Love all those guys. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoy being a part of the group at LexJJ. When I go there I’m going to work on jiu jitsu, but my feeling is also that I’m going to hang out with my friends. I feel as though what I get out of going to Lexjj makes me a better all around father and spouse to my family, too. It really kind of rounds out a quite full and satisfying world for me. Thanks Jeb for fostering an environment that has brought together such fun, good people that I get to call my friends. I look forward to training at Lexington jiu jitsu for years to come!
Got to go to a class with Coach Walker teaching. Learned so much that I had no clue existed! The details were amazing. Had a lot of fun and everyone was legit. They kept me safe while competing at a very high level. 10 out of 10 would recommend. The best around.
The positive gym culture and leadership at Lexington Juijitsu prioritizes excellence, safety and longevity while providing world class training to help students become deadly proficient in BJJ.
I've attended this academy for 8 months. When I first arrived, I was starting jiu jitsu for the first time but had received martial arts instruction in the past. A few observations and comments: 1) The staff is professional and knowledgeable in their instruction. The academy has numerous black belt instructors, in addition to lower belt instructors that provide a variety of perspectives while instructing. 2) The members/students of the academy are there to learn jiu jitsu, not to beat each other or injure others with sloppy technique. There is no ego among the students or staff, regardless of belt level. 3) The facility is clean, and each student is required to wear a clean gi to each class. Hygiene is not an issue here, unlike other martial art schools. 4) There's a structure to promotions, rather than merely leaving promotions to the instructor's discretion or basing promotions strictly on time. This allows for a tailored, individualized approach to learning and promoting. 5) The academy focuses on self defense. Unlike other martial art schools, the self defense focus provides a real-life approach to learning with the purpose of preparing each student for effectively defending in a physical altercation (see #6 for the why). 6) Do not misunderstand the self defense focus. A number of the students (all belt levels) compete in local competitions and have consistently outperformed students from other academies. Although I'm fairly new, I believe that the self defense approach to jiu jitsu creates a better, well-rounded jiu jitsu practitioner. It requires an answer to issues such as: protecting the head, neck, and face at all times; escaping disadvantageous positions; obtaining/maintaining control before attempting submissions; etc. Bottom line: this academy is a hidden gem. It's more than a jiu jitsu school, it's a community and vehicle to become a better, more capable person. If you're thinking of trying jiu jitsu, come try this academy for a few classes. The first class will be nothing more than overcoming your own ego/nervousness/uncertainty. Come to the second and third class to see what you missed from the first class when you were nervous and unsure. You will not regret starting jiu jitsu at this academy. It will change your life.
I started training here in 2021. Awesome place to train!
Great place. Visited a few other gyms and ended up and Lexington Jiu Jitsu due to the great instruction, and incorporation of Sparring into their instruction. Not crazy high energy Sparring like some places but simply trying techniques against a partner who is trying to resist. Invaluable in the learning process, imo. LJJ is great with visitors and new people, so come give it a shot!
I have been training at Lexington Jiu Jitsu for a little over a year; it has been the very best experience! The instructors are incredible. The classes are well organized and versatile for any situation. I highly recommend this academy for all levels of your Jiujitsu journey.
I wrote my original review in 2022. It's been about a year since I wrote the review and everything I wrote is still 100% true. Take advantage of the three free classes and check out the school. Original review: LJJ has the 4 things you need for a great jiu-jitsu school - a technical program, great instructors, great students, and regular sparring. They have a great set of lesson plans with a focus on attack and defense from specific positions. For example, one week will focus on attacking and defending in the mount. Focusing on one position for the week allows you to see and practice the a solid package for that position. The positional sparring at the end of class allows you to immediately put what you've learned into practice to really solidify the concepts in your mind. The instructors do a great job of teaching the technical aspects of each move and answering any questions you have. The demonstrations of the techniques are slow, smooth, and detailed to make sure you know what's required to make the move work. You truly couldn't ask for a better group of students. Everyone is there to be the best they can be and help the students around them be the best they can be. Everyone strives to be technical and the bigger guys never get lazy and just smash the snot out of their smaller opponents or just muscle their way through moves. Some of the guys in the class are literally more than twice my size but they never crush me. I have great sparring matches Every. Single. Time. Once you get your first stripe, you can participate in open sparring after class. Sparring is essential to becoming a great practitioner of the art. Drills alone will never give you the timing and critical thinking skills you need to truly master the art.
Clean and friendly environment. The school is well run and you can tell the instructors are all on the same page. The curriculum is well organized and versatile enough for any situation. I reccomend this place for all levels of Jiujitsu and self defense players whether you are trying to establish your game or trying to make your game better.
Great group of people with good training. If you want jujutsu for self defense this is the place.
This is a wonderful place to train in jiu jitsu with an added perspective on Street self defense. The instructors are phenomenal and classes are laid back while always maintaining safety. Everybody who trains here are welcoming and happily give tips. There is definitely a mentality of growing better together, desiring improvement for your partner as well as yourself. With 3 free classes there are no excuses not to give it a try.
Awesome family atmosphere.
Best Jiu jitsu academy I've ever been to. Clean, professional, very welcoming and helpful teachers and students, extremely effective teaching style.
I came from out of town on an extended work project, and I was wanting to find something healthy to do with my evenings. I had trained BJJ before for a short period of time, so I thought I'd look for a class close to my hotel and start training again. When you visit a new martial arts class for the first time, you never really know what you're going to find. I'll tell you what I found at Lexington Jiu-Jitsu: I found a great class full of great people to train with, led by great instructors who walk through class during drills and give individual instruction to help you learn technique properly. What I didn't find at Lexington Jiu-Jitsu: Egos. From advanced brown belts down to white belts, the attitude and mentality is to learn, not just to dominate. I am a 41 year old guy who always has to go to work the next day. The great attitude of everyone I've trained with so far makes me confident that I'm training in a safe learning environment, and I'm having a lot of fun doing it. -Ryan
Excellent teaching in a supportive environment! I've been going for two years and I love having the opportunity to train with such a great team of men and women. The focus is always on personal improvement, and solid technique. As a life-long couch potato, I didn't think martial arts was something I could ever learn, let alone enjoy, but Lexington Jiu Jitsu changed my mind! It has been a Le-Jit experience!
The learning atmosphere at Lexington Jiu Jitsu is phenomenal! I’ve tried other martial arts and even other jiu jitsu places and felt like the karate kid walking into the Cobra Kai dojo! But everyone here is so friendly and helpful, from day 1, I felt like Norm walking into Cheers! I train dogs for a living, so I do a lot of instruction and I’m super impressed with skills and training techniques of the instructors here! I’ve even picked up some great ideas to make me a better dog trainer! If you’re on the fence about jiu jitsu, come here and give it a try, but beware you’ll probably become addicted like me!
Update: I originally wrote this review sometime around 2017 or so. I still stand by everything I said. Going on almost a decade of training, I've been through career changes, pregnancy and postpartum, and other life changing events. Through it all, LJJ has offered a consistent outlet with great, supportive training partners and friends. I'm looking forward to continuing my jiu jitsu journey at LJJ. Hands down the best BJJ academy in the Columbia area. Well-trained instructors, solid teaching, comfortable & welcoming atmosphere. LJJ is one-of-a-kind, offering a complete self-defense curriculum that applies to both the street and the mat. Jeb has created something special and you really won't find better! Stop thinking about it and just go in and try a class!!
Love the atmosphere at this academy. Lineage is legit and curriculum is excellent. Comfortable for students of all ages and ability levels. I cant recommend Lexington Jiu Jitsu enough for anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or self defense. This is the absolute best academy in the midlands for Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
