I’m an experienced higher belt, and I must say, the vibe, expertise, and flow of the class was amazing. If you’re looking for the psychotic over the top culture, probably not for you. If you want to learn, roll and feel good - this is your place.
The owner is patient, thorough and energetic. He is an amazing teacher.
Kevin is a spectacular instructor. I’ve been going for almost three months now, and every beginner combatives lesson covers instruction on a fundamental level with do’s and don’ts on move sets ensuring the safety of everyone.
Sensei Kevin is great. He has done so much to increase my son’s confidence through his knowledge and teaching of Jiu Jitsu. Just a fantastic teacher, person and motivator for young kids. I really appreciate how he holds them accountable, even at a young age, and all the kids respond to him. I was unsure what to expect at the start, but so far it has been one of my best decisions yet by signing my son up for Sensei Kevin’s class. Excited to get my daughter going too when she is old enough.
Sensai Kevin is great with the kids in the Little Ninja class! 5-7 year old kids can quickly build self-confidence and technical skills.
My son has been attending Kanjizai academy for over 2 years now and loves going there. As a father it is great to see his confidence and discipline grow from jiu jitsu. Sensei Kevin is great with the kids. He provides a fun and safe environment to learn Jiu jitsu. I know when my son is there he is in good hands with Sensei Kevin.
My son has been doing Jiu-Jitsu here for over a year. In that time I have watched his confident and technique improve. He loves going to Jiu-Jitsu every single week! A major reason we picked this academy is because of Sensei Kevin is a great teacher. He is funny, patient, and attentive. Not all instructors can work with kids, but Kevin is amazing!
The Instructor is great with the kids. Very nice, but disciplined. Its a challenge to keep a group of younger kids focused.
Great class! My 5 years old kid loved it
My 5-year-old absolutely loves this Jiu Jitsu place! The instructor is amazing with the kids, patient, and knows how to make learning both fun and effective. The atmosphere is positive and welcoming, and we’ve seen great progress in both skill and confidence. Highly recommend for any parent looking for a great martial arts experience for their child!
Fantastic experience for kids and reaching them in a way they understand
Kevin definitely knows his stuff. Everyone is super humble, laid back, very considerate and careful with beginners, and clean. Learning a ton! Grateful to have begun my BJJ journey at this dojo. The overall feeling is like “we’re here to learn and help each other”, so I find it welcoming to everyone. There’s usually someone to roll with gentle or someone who prefers to roll more enthusiastically which is nice to have the variety.
Very knowledgeable, great with kids...highly recommend!
I have been training jiu jitsu for 3+ years now at Kanjizai. Not only is it a great mental and physical workout, it is my preferred avenue for maintaining fitness. I look forward to the technical and physical work of learning jiu jitsu, and I enjoy my Kanjizai compatriots. I am disappointed when I miss a training day (something I tend not to feel when I don't make it to the gym).
My son has been attending for a year, he has improved in many ways, showed more confidence, Improved his grades at school and never gets in trouble . He’s is 14th going to 15 and is the best decision I made for an after school program. The teachers and the community are extremely supportive and talented.
Great place to train. Good vibe, great coaching and training partners.
I’ve been training at Kanjizai since November, and it has truly changed my life. The transformation I’ve experienced both physically and mentally is incredible. The atmosphere at Kanjizai is top-notch, with a welcoming and supportive vibe from both the instructors and fellow students. Kevin, the owner and instructor, does an outstanding job. His dedication, knowledge, and passion for jiujitsu make every class engaging and rewarding. Everyone here has a great attitude, making every session enjoyable and motivating. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced practitioner, this school is perfect for any skill level. I can’t recommend Kanjizai enough for anyone looking to improve their fitness, learn jiujitsu, and be part of a fantastic community.
Absolutely amazing coaches, great style of teaching, and i have learned so much in a short span of time. I seriously recommend coming here.
Have been doing a family lesson for months. Sensei Kevin is a phenomenal teacher- he’s skilled at teaching our young kids in a way they understand. He teaches in a practical way- for self defense against bullies and bad guys. I’m feeling confident with my ability to handle myself, and confident for my girls to defend themselves and not panic. 1000% recommend you come here!!
Awesome community, knowledgeable instructor. Highly recommend.
I was looking for a Jiu Jitsu academy in Towson and Kanjizai’s proximity to Towson Univ. made it quite appealing to me. As well as the reputation it has in the area. Since beginning my training there, the experience has been amazing. Kevin, who’s a professional in his art, is very informative without making training overwhelming for newcomers. The atmosphere is welcoming for anyone new to martial arts, like I was. Definitely would recommend for anyone wanting to try it out!
Kanjizai Academy of Jiu-Jitsu is amazing! Sensei Kevin is an awesome instructor. More importantly my children has learned alot!
Our family has been going to Kanjizai for a while now. We really enjoy it and our kids get a lot out of it. Sensei Kevin is so great with them. He is just firm enough to keep class on track but also exhibits a high degree of patience with them. I love to watch him teach a class and I really value the diversity that is offered here. I highly recommend checking it out!
My son and I started taking classes a few months ago. We both absolutely love it . The instruction is fantastic and the other students are very welcoming and helpful.
Kanjizai Academy is a great place to learn Jiu-Jitsu. My son felt welcomed and part of the class. Kevin is a really thorough teacher. Would recommend!
Our 10 year old and five year old have been working with Kevin for two years and it’s been an incredible experience for all of us. They’ve gained discipline and confidence, and become more respectful and helpful at home. Huge thanks to these guys!
I've been training at Kanjizai for 8 years now. It's a great place to learn. The staff there are friendly and open
Great school great sensee great atmosphere and the kids really learn my son joined 4 months ago and he love it. Keep up the good work
sensei kevin is really great with kids and is an excellent jiu jitsu instructor. my son is 7 and has been going for a little over a year. sensei kevin has helped him discover a lot of discipline, confidence, challenges, sportsmanship, and amazing things his own little body can do. kevin encourages positive behavior in and out of class to great effect. the class is diverse and welcoming to everyone. i have to say that kevin's politics can puzzle and freak me out sometimes if i look at his bulletin board, and i know they've turned some people off for good, but i'm really glad we've stuck with it- good for all of us to expand our comfort zones.
Great report with kids from K-gardeners to retirees. Thanks Sensei!
This academy is the most welcoming jiu jitsu gym I’ve ever been a part of. From day one I’ve loved the enthusiasm and genuineness of Coach Kevin’s (and all other coaches here) teaching style. Also, Coach Kevin continuously does his best to put in lots of time actually engaging with each student on a personal level. He breaks down difficult techniques in a way that anyone can master them.
I was looking for a place with a children's self-defense program and found Kanjizai. After starting my son in Little Ninjas, I read more about the Combatives philosophy and decided I liked the approach. As a result, I also signed up for classes at Kanjizai. My son and I now have more than a year of classes/training in jiu jitsu, and we both still very much enjoy the activity and the challenge of learning new techniques. My younger son wanted to participate, as well, so he is also now taking classes. It is quite personally rewarding to share this experience with them. I can't speak highly enough about the welcoming environment that Kevin and Jimmy create in the dojo. It is collegial and fun, yet they are both serious and professional about teaching jiu jitsu. As a result, I have made some good friends at Kanjizai, and I look forward to attending classes/training sessions on a weekly basis. An additional side benefit is that I no longer need to hit the gym, as the jiu jitsu is a great workout. Staying fit while learning a useful set of skills has eliminated the boredom from my exercise routine.
Highly recommend, I’ve seen a drastic change in my son’s confidence since he’s been attending. Kevin is an amazing instructor and my son adores him. Enrolling my son has been the best decision I’ve made.
I started Kanjizai approximately one year ago and I’ve had an incredible experience as an adult trying martial arts for the first time. As a woman I think it’s crucial to know self-defense. Kanjizai provides a holistic knowledge of this through various classes going through Jiu jitsu, muy thai, striking techniques, knife fighting skills, take downs, and more. Kevin is an excellent teacher, he is patient and thorough with his methods. Aside from his teaching, he is incredibly flexible and such a great guy, I’ve had two injuries and Kevin was more than willing to pause my account and give me all the time I needed to recuperate. The Kanjizai community is fantastic, I enjoy my peers and meeting great friends there. Everyone is made to feel welcome, people of all ages, sizes and abilities come and it’s fantastic.
Good energy
Excellent! My 10 year-old son has been attending for almost a year and I am continually impressed by the quality of instruction. My son loves it and has learned so much. So thankful for this studio; it makes me glad we’re in Baltimore.
I have been a student with Kanjizai for two years and couldn't say enough wonderful things about it. The training is incredibly well organized, and includes traditional fighting, as well as the modern applications, benefiting new and seasoned students alike. Those students looking for a high level of detail (specific terminology, comprehensive technique sequences, a clear curriculum and promotional expectations etc.) will also find it engaging and fulfilling as a result. The programs for children are also phenomenal, helping to instill good values and discipline while both teaching valuable self defense and a providing a fun and safe environment in which to do so.
I've been training with Sensei Kevin and Kanjizai Martial Arts for over 7 years. I've had 30 years of martial arts training and this is where I want to be. It doesn't matter if you're new to self-defense or a veteran, young or old, this school provides the material and intensity you need. I've found life-long friends here that I now call my family and I've never worked with a more accepting and understanding group of people anywhere before. All three of my children train here now and I'm thankful for the life-long skills, confidence, and discipline they will walk away with. If you haven't visited, now would be the best time. Edit: Many exciting things have happened over the past 2 years. Sensei Kevin now has a certified Gracie BJJ facility. And the curriculum for traditional martial arts has been revised and really works to build a strong foundation for the students. The new facility really is something to see as well. I was wrong about one thing though...if you still haven't visited...NOW would be the best time!!!
Sensei Kevin is patient with the students and he motivates them to excel. My son absolutely loves Kanjizai.
Sensai Kevin is a definition of a real Shinobi he goes out his way for those who are dedicated to learn Jiujutsu, Ninjutsu, and getting in shape as long as you put in the work and don't play around!!! currently this ninja is a mission to obtain a security certification and both a GED and a high school diploma then back to the dojo for more spiritual refinement and taijutsu training !
Awesome staff very polite and professional. They were willing to take the time out to explain everything to me in detail. Very nice studio! I will return!
This is a great place for my son to spend his after school time. I highly recommend it!
Our six year old son has been attending for over a year now. Sensei is great at keeping the kids focused, delegating duties to older kids and demonstrating skills. Our son has come to enjoy his days of training. We are pleased with his improved behavior, attention, and discipline.
My son attends the Little Ninjas class and the teacher is the most amazing person. My son is engaged, taught self defense and is more focused in all aspects of his life. Without hesitation I highly recommend trying this dojo out!!
My son (11 y/o) has been taking classes at Kanjizai for over a year. He loves it so much that he begged to become part of the Demo team, the Black Belt Club, and the Special Winning Attitudes Team (SWAT) (includes weekly assisting with teaching the Little Ninjas class). His physical fitness, confidence, and sense of responsibility have all improved since joining. I was initially opposed to the idea of "fighting" as a sport, particularly for young boys, but the focus is actually on self-defense, self-awareness, physical fitness, personal responsibility, and discipline. I now personally feel that any child can benefit from martial arts training, and I would certainly recommend taking classes at Kanjizai Martial Arts.
I have to say I have been looking for a new style to learn and I happened to see a sign for Kanjizai Martial Arts while driving. I looked them up and saw what they taught and couldn't be more thrilled. I haven't joined yet but I intend to once able. I emailed about prices and such and got a swift and very courteous response. 5 stars!!
One of the best schools on the east coast for ninjutsu training.
The establishment proudly promotes anti-vaccine misinformation and pseudo-science. Two non-sensical flyers downloaded from the internet were offered where every student checks in. I’m guessing the lead teacher isn’t vaccinated based on a conversation I had with him. Perhaps you want your kids rolling around on a mat with someone who is vulnerable to COVID infection. I sure don’t. Two stars because my son had fun the only hour I’ll ever let him be there.
