While looking for a gym to take my children, I decided to participate in Journey's 42 day challenge to experience the gym culture and instruction first hand, and now that I've completed the challenge, not only am I signing my children up I've begun the journey of becoming a blue belt. This gym has been welcoming, encouraging, and fun. Looking forward to learning Jiu-Jitsu with my kids at Journey Jiu-Jitsu, and our new extended family.
Best decision I've made in a while. Great environment for learning and incredible community.
Great place to learn BJJ! Awesome coaches, friendly practitioners, lots of mat space to comfortably sparring and roll. Everything is clean, new and the music is great too ;)
First session went great my son had never done anything like this before today...
I started training here two years ago with no grappling or combat sports experience, and I love it. Great facility and great coaches. You'll find welcoming and fun training partners at all skill/experience levels. I can't recommend it highly enough!
I've been at Journey for a little over two years and it's been great!
If you’re reading this review, then you’re considering training with Journey Academy; Do It! When I joined, I was simply looking for a form of exercise that introduced a social aspect, since activities like swimming or jogging are isolating at times. I never expected Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to have such a positive impact on my confidence and overall stress management in such short time. I’m not deep into the sport yet, just 2 months in as of writing this (completed the Warrior challenge recently), but I wanted to give a review and let people know that this Journey is worth embarking on. I personally feel that everyone should feel the impact that BJJ can have on one’s mind as well as their body, and Journey Academy is a great place to train it!
I came to Madison short notice for work. It was easy to organize a quick drop-in. Alex was even generous enough to let me borrow a gi. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming, and I had a great training session. Thank you everyone at Journey BJJ!
I dropped into a Journey BJJ class while on a work trip to Madison. The owner, Alex, was knowledgeable and gave excellent instruction. Everyone there was very welcoming. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in town.
I was brand new to BJJ when I started at Journey, and I can't recommend it enough. Classes are extremely approachable, the environment is top notch, and the instructors are patient and knowledgeable. Has been a fantastic place to learn, where I've felt welcome from day one and have become fast friends with everyone I've interacted with. The energy and drive of everyone involved is palpable.
A welcoming environment in a very well planned and professionally executed approach to instruction for both beginners and more experienced martial artists.
The coaches are patient and knowledgeable. The other participants in class are also so helpful. Being new to jiu jitsu, it's nice to be surrounded by people of different levels and ages, and to find a place that is so welcoming.
I was looking for a fitness plan that offered more than the standard lift, pull and push approach seen in most gyms. I found so much more at Journey! The instructions are clear, the staff is world class and the sense of community is second to none! With a variety of class schedules and the offering of traditional or No Gi styles I would be hard pressed to not find time to attend. It’s more than that though, with a nutrition plan and folks that hold you accountable, it feels like a family. I would recommend Journey anyone looking to improve themselves through hard work and dedication.
I have only been at Journey for a little over a month. It has been a great experience. Instructors are very knowledgeable and friendly and all other students I have worked with are super friendly and fun. It is a total body workout while having fun!
Can’t recommend this gym enough. Great instructors, amazing schedule, and straightforward honest memberships.
Spotless facility, focused program, and a supportive staff, I feel like I’ve hit the goldmine for my grappling education.
Great gym, especially for starting out. Very knowledgeable and friendly instructors. Same goes for the experienced members. Everyone is friendly and takes an interest in helping you improve. Highly recommend.
Love this place. Everyone is friendly, and it's a great place to learn bjj. Best decision I made in a long time.
Looking for a small friendly with a dash of comparativeness, look no further.
I started training here last summer and it was a great decision. We train, we laugh and we do some winning too. If you want to learn great submission wrestling skills this is the place
Journey is a great place to build community and a better version of yourself. I recommend their facility for anyone, regardless of age. The environment is family-friendly and is great for whichever stage of life you and your family is in.
(edit) They're the best Jiu Jitsu gym I've seen
Excellent kids program - the coaches are great at encouraging discipline and commitment along with teaching fun and thorough jiu jitsu techniques through demonstration, games, and lots of supervised one-on-one sparring. My 8-year-old son has gained so much self control, confidence, maturity, and most of all enjoyment from his classes and competitions at Journey over the last year.
Really strong onboarding program to be sure everyone new to BJJ is up to the challenge. All coaches and members are helpful and patient in assisting newer people to improve their own form & technique, which is imperative for new people to stay encouraged. Glad I started my BJJ "journey" here and looking forward to continuing with the team!
Trying Jiu jitsu was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. Excellent environment, clean facility, and incredible coaches who are passionate about the art of Jiu Jitsu. Alex, Bill, and Coleman are warm and welcoming providing tons of knowledge, engaging classes and are patient helping you learn necessary techniques that will grow you mentally and physically. Happy to be apart of the journey family. Would highly recommend.
I've been coming here, along with my kids, for 7 months now. We all love it. The kids classes are fun for the kids, yet structured and disciplined enough to be a quality learning environment. Both of my kids are learning at an incredible rate and love playing/rolling with their friends. There is a good mix of experienced/older kids, and new/younger students of all sizes. The adult classes are also great. I started from almost zero BJJ experience as an older guy and enjoyed it from the first class. The pace is a perfect fit: I feel challenged every day, but I can still keep up and progress. The coaches have developed a solid curriculum and great culture of cool people. I look forward to practice days!
Love this gym. Lunch crew is a great group of guys and Coleman is a hell of a coach. All shapes and sizes are welcome.
Excellent staff, my 13 year old is new to this and has been warmly welcomed by the other members and staff. Would definitely recommend!
So good I became a life time member. Great community great coaches.
Dropped into class this week (visiting from up north) Alex and Coleman were both great! Met a lot of other cool people too!
Overall, a great gym for new or experienced people. The gym offers classes 3-4 times a day, each class taught by a different coach. I had the opportunity and availability to attend classes taught by each coach throughout my time at the gym. All the coaches are very competent and engaging, and each has unique methods, preferences, and styles when approaching jiu jitsu and teaching. This gives you the opportunity to choose which coach’s style is best suited for you, even though each coach is more than happy to show you, individually, alternative approaches to movements when confusion and struggles arise. The coaches were also eager to show and teach alternatives to movements to best suit your innate skills, strengths, and anatomy. There are also open mat times after some classes to allow more time to roll; this is especially useful when it’s nearing competition time. The fellow members of the gyms are also amazing and helpful people! As a new member and someone new to jiu jitsu the tips given by experienced members while rolling we’re just as helpful as the coaches!
The coaches at Journey are very knowledgeable and patient. It is an inviting and supportive atmosphere were questions are encouraged. Great people!
I can't recommend Journey enough for giving me an opportunity to try something totally out of my comfort zone. I've always been interested in fitness, but wanted to mix up my stale exercise routine. I'm a 5'2" woman, and had never pursued a high contact sport. I initially joined Journey for their six week introductory course because of the gym’s philosophy. They obviously put a lot of thought and care into how they structure their new students’ experiences in the gym. The introductory program requires new students to come for six weeks, three days a week. I believe the philosophy behind that approach is to a) help newcomers looking to get into or back into fitness develop some level of accountability and help them form a habit around fitness, and b) enable them to actually understand what Jiu Jitsu is all about. I myself quickly realized that I couldn’t have possibly judged Jiu Jitsu after a class or two. The regularity of my attendance also created a community of friends (something I’m trying to cultivate as a remote worker), since I saw the same people every week. My first day at the gym was amazing. Alex, my coach and also the owner of the studio, was very welcoming and immediately paired me with another student my size. At the end of class, he publicly congratulated me and the whole class cheered. What a supportive environment right off the bat. Over the course of the next few weeks, I started to appreciate Alex’s teaching style. Of course he taught us a variety of specific moves, but more importantly he tried to help us see patterns of movement. This quickly helped me transition away from trying to remember specific choreography (something I tend to do as a former ballet dancer), into being able to respond smoothly to opponents. By the end of my six weeks, I felt somewhat decent at defense and holding my guard. I also can’t emphasize how kind the rest of the students were. As I’m sure many people could imagine, Jiu Jitsu tends to be male-dominated. Any men I was paired with, despite size, height, or age differences, were always very kind and respectful. Whenever I asked a male student to roll with me, they never hesitated to say yes, something I’m not sure is always common. Finally, I was never the only woman in the room! NEVER! I attended 18-20 classes and there were always at least one or two other women there. So ladies, if you are interested in BJJ, you’ll have a female community immediately at Journey. For personal reasons, I decided to end my time at Journey after the six week introductory course, although I very seriously considered moving forward with the blue belt program. For anyone considering trying something totally new, I’d recommend Journey in a heartbeat.
I trained here for 3 weeks when i was visiting Madison. I have to give this place 5 stars even though the training area is to small in my opinion. Very friendly, very welcoming and hygienic place. And coach Bill is a fantastic instructor. Thanks guys 👍
I dropped in from out of town on a Friday morning fundamentals class. There was a great mix of people there between ages sizes strengths and gender. Alex ran a great class, it was a very progressive sequence on breaking guard. If you're in the Madison area and looking for some time on the mat this is a great place to stop.
Extremely clean facilities and well-organized training. The instructors are top-notch. I learned a lot within just a couple of months and can't wait to return for more.
I joined Journey at the beginning of 2020 as a means of staying in shape with the side benefit of learning some self defense. I did not expect at the time BJJ was going to be so MUCH FUN. It taps into the same reward center that gets you addicted to video games and that's what keeps you coming back every week. On top of that, you meet new people every day. Some of these people become life-long friends, and it's very easy to make friends because you know there's at least one common interest you can talk about. All my friends are now people I've met through Jiu Jitsu and I would regularly hang out outside of class, whereas before Jiu Jitsu I had no social life. I watched them grow from a new gym with mostly white belts to a growing army of blue belts and purple belts. They are also likely the most female friendly BBJ gym in the area. Since there are already so many women attending, it's easy for them to find other female training partners. I earned my blue belt in September 2021. Sadly, I couldn't stay in Madison and had to say goodbye, but I will never forget them. Go Journey!
Journey is a fantastic gym, I would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for self defense, a fun place to work out or just as a place to learn and practice jiu-jitsu
Coach Alex and his team have helped our children gain skills they will use the rest of their lives. I appreciate the fun and discipline these coaches bring to the mat.
I have been training at Journey for just under a year. For someone who hates cardio, running, biking, etc, I find jujitsu to be a great alternative. I would recommend Journey BJJ to anyone. Their coaches are knowledgeable and experienced. They create a fun learning atmosphere. I really like their flexibility of classes and variety. Their classes are at all times of the day that can fit anybody's schedule. The facility is clean and practices are well structured. Come check it out!
Highly recommend! Coaches are great teachers of the BJJ sport and self defense. Coaches created a positive and healthy environment for all levels of fitness, athleticism, and experience.
Journey is an amazing Jiu Jitsu gym that is stock full of wonderful people and coaches! Only downside is they don’t have a shower/water fountain(make sure to bring water!) on location, but do they have changing rooms and bathrooms. Overall, I can’t recommend this academy enough!
I’ve been attending Journey for 4 months. Immediately I was impressed with the quality instruction provided by all of the coaches. Also, the safe and inclusive environment that’s fostered has enhanced my learning experience. So happy with my choice to include Journey as part of my life’s journey.
Two of my children started training here in December 2021. They both really enjoy the coaches and especially the other kids training. They're learning many life lessons in a challenging environment while having fun.
The Journey community is what makes this a fantastic place to learn. It can be intimidating stepping into a new place to learn a totally new skill, but everybody here is incredibly welcoming. No egos, just everyone working with each other to improve. I recommend the 6 week challenge to all my friends and, really, anybody who has even just a passing curiosity in the sport.
Great gym, great coaches. Highly recommended. Been at Journey for over 6 months and I love it. Definitely seeing the result.
Great place to learn, Coach Alex and Coach Bill are great instructors, highly recommend this place for people that want to learn self defense and something to be committed.
Signing for the modern defense and fundamentals class made me fall in love with the sport, it has been the best use of my money. Alex helped me on my journey towards peak physical health and knowledge I’ll use over my lifetime to working towards mastering any sport.
Went here to watch Royler Gracie put on a seminar while passing through town. Top notch jujitsu gym and a great place to learn the art.
Journey BJJ Academy has been a fantastic place to learn jui jitsu. Both my 11yr old son and I have been taking classes for the last month and have found it to be a very welcoming community to grow and learn in this new skill for us. 10/10 would recommend.
Phenomenal gym with great instructors. The gym has a friendly atmosphere which makes you want to keep going back.
Everybody is very welcoming and helpful they make you feel like a part of the team! Jiu jitsu is also so much fun, it helps you become stronger and more confident!
best place ever
I've been attending Journey BJJ for about 3 months and am very glad I made the decision to give it a try. The coaches do a great job teaching someone with no experience and the members are friendly and helpful. I'd recommend it if you have ever wanted to try BJJ.
I have been training at Journey for approximately 5 months, best investment I’ve made in a long time. At 37 years old I weighed 205 lbs in January and I now weigh 170 lbs. This gym has an amazing and diverse group of people: younger, older, men, women, college athletes, middle aged parents (like me), and everything in between. DO NOT be intimidated if you do not have grappling experience, everyone there is focused on making each other better. If you were a wrestler and want to push yourself there are some great training partners that can assist you with that at Journey. It is an amazing little community, and I have made several new friends. Coach Alex & Bill are incredibly welcoming. Just stepping foot in the door is the hardest part, once you’re there it’s addicting. If health and confidence is a priority, you should consider it.
Great gym! Super great coaches and friendly atmosphere and community! Safe and judgement free zone.
I've been going to Journey BJJ for about 4 months now. I typically attend morning classes. The gym has a positive and safe atmosphere. I love the coaches - they genuinely care and offer great instruction, often staying after class to answer questions students may have, or to demonstrate some technical detail someone is asking about.
I joined Journey in February 2021. It was one of the best decisions I've made. Coaches are dedicated to their craft and are enthusiastic to teach their years of accumulated BJJ knowledge.
Friendly atmosphere and people are kind and do not try to hurt the new people. Do not be afraid of trying out a class because you think people will try to hurt you. New people are helped and not abused. Malicious people are not tolerated.
Love training with the other students and the excellent coaches at Journey. This is a very welcoming gym and incredibly inclusive to people new to the sport. There are some great upper belts that’s can really roll smooth and tough and also are willing to talk through situations or show additional skills after practice .
Very clean, beginner-friendly atmosphere, solid coaching, focused curriculum… a great option for anyone near Madison looking to train BJJ… Start your journey today!
Nice and safe educational environment. My kid has fun in every class. The coaches are nice and fun to work with. They focused well on the kids and the areas they need to improve into. Highly recommended.
I started taking Jiu-Jitsu classes to work on my cardio, lose some weight and build some natural strength, while hopefully doing something fun. I have a hard time with the monotonous routines of running and lifting weights. Let me tell you folks, this has ended up being one of the best choices I've ever made. Not only has Journey Academy helped me take my fitness to the level I want, my overall strength has never been better. Even those pesky ab muscles have started to show! Not only that, but I've met a lot of awesome people from all walks of life. I was very nervous my first day coming in but Coach Alex eased me into the process and I'll never look back.
I've been going here for about 9 months and the owner / coaches have all been amazing. They are always pushing us to better ourselves but to do so safely. The environment has always been fun and friendly which was great especially as someone with zero wrestling or martial arts background before attending this gym. If you are interested in learning jiu jitsu I highly recommend coming here.
It's been a great experience for my 5 year old son. The place is clean, professional and the instructors are awesome with kids. Plus they're learning invaluable strength, balance and self-defense moves. I wish my Dad signed me up for this when I was a kid.
Journeys has been such a great experience for us and especially Emilee. Such a positive and great place for her we can’t thank you guys enough. Jujitsu is such a great sport in so many ways especially for young kids🤙🤙
I popped into journey BJJ at the start of the pandemic - classes were online and despite the fact it was virtual, there was still a supportive encouraging environment. Coach Alex was frequently checking in with us to gauge our satisfaction with the classes. As time went on, he made sure to inform us by email and in person about the COVID precautions they were taking as they transitioned to in person classes. They are checking temperatures at the door and thoroughly sanitizing the gym before each class.
Great gym! Coaches are top notch. Other members are respectful and approachable. Facility is clean and we'll maintained. Can't wait to get back in.
Amazing place to learn Jiu Jitsu, extremely clean and well maintained by the owner Alex. Coaching is fantastic and lots of time and energy is invested in you to get better. Good mix of students that are there to compete and excel fast as well as for self defense, to get in shape, etc. Would highly recommend this gym if you’ve never taken a Jiu jitsu class or want to compete at a high level.
A fantastic gym! I’ve been to 2 classes so far, but everyone I’ve interacted with have been extremely welcoming and friendly. The coaches/instructors do a great job explaining new moves and ensure the students understand them. I recommend this gym to anyone that is considering trying BJJ - great culture, clean gym, and an amazing workout 💪🏼
My very shy niece was being bullied at school. She has been going to Journey for 8 months now and she is so confident that she is not getting bullied anymore. She loves the classes and it keeps her mind focused. I can't say enough about the staff and how great they are with not only kids but with nervous parents as well!
Alex is a great coach. His classes are structured and fun and he handles large groups of children of different ages well. He is supportive when you are just learning about Jiu Jitsu. (How many times has he tied my daughter's belt? Who knows, I've lost count even though the very useful app supporting classes here has a video on how to do it.) The place is joyful and well-taken care of as well.
The instructors are knowledgeable, friendly, and able to change their teaching style to do what is best for you. The patrons are friendly and relaxed. I looked at 4 different places before this one when I moved and this was by far the best I have seen in Madison.
So great with kids and respectful. It's a powerful workout for my young daughter and I love how the more experienced students help the others with tips, even when the experienced student is on their back being mounted - they just talk - amazing. Exceptional is another word I'd use. Also, the coaches are phenomenal (one being a 3rd degree black belt that trained with the Gracies [look it up]) and fantastic with their class. I recommend this Academy 100%. Thanks Coaches Alex, and Cristiano!
My son has been a student for several months. The study of BJJ has improved his physical health, his discipline, and his focus. He loves the classes. The leadership is kind, patient, and has high standards for the kids. I appreciate their calm style and their focus on personal integrity with the kids.
Awesome experience at Journey BJJ! Cristiano, Alex and the nogi class made me feel right at home. The instruction was superb and the facilities were clean and pristine! Check them out! #5stars
I've had children attend the Brazilian jujitsu classes. My kids, 6, 10, and 12, absolutely loved the classes, and they also learned so much. They progressed quickly and learned things I didn't expect like self confidence and discipline. My 6 year old would never speak in front of anyone outside the family but a few months into her classes and she would raise her hand to speak in front of the whole class with all the parents present. I really can't say enough about Journey, just a great experience over all.
I started the 3 class trial and I’ve already signed up after my second class. Everyone here has been great so far and I’m excited to learn more from the coaches!
Great place to learn BJJ. Everyone if very friendly and helpful.
I started here with a free workshop they had and instantly fell in love with Jiu-Jitsu and this place. The art is so dynamic and the teachers are world class in their knowledge and ability. The atmosphere is so welcoming and supportive you can’t help but make a few friends. Everyday I go to class I leave feeling better in my mind, body and spirit 🙂
Great place to check out BJJ if you're interested. Instructors are a good mix of helpful to newbies and experienced for veterans. Everyone there is friendly and helpful.
Very experienced instruction, helpful students, great variety of classes and times. Also high quality mats in a clean well kept training Hall
My 12 year old son and I joined Journey BJJ at the end of October, 2018 with the intent to help my son become physically active, learn to protect himself and teach him to be a more respectful and disciplined person. We were introduced to the art with the support of the superior instruction and friendship from both Prof. Cristiano and Coach Alex. Our learning adventure quickly became an addiction that my entire family is now a part of. Prof. Cristiano and Coach Alex have helped us all exceed even the greatest expectations we initially had set for ourselves and continue to push us to new levels of accomplishment and self confidence. Our little academy has quickly grown into a brother/sister hood and family where everyone is accepted and supported. This is a world class opportunity no one should miss! Come for the rolls and stay for the friends!
Journey BJJ Academy has the expertise of two phenomenal instructors that take pride in not only their knowledge of the art of Jiu Jitsu, but take pride in knowing that they get to teach their knowledge and demonstrate their love of the sport to students ranging from 4 year old white belts to second and third degree black belts. If you want to join a gym that challenges you in a fun and welcoming environment, Journey BJJ Academy is for you.
I had been looking for a place to learn BJJ and get a good workout, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. Cristiano and Alex are great teachers, and other members are friendly and supportive.
I've been training at Journey for about a month and have felt completely welcomed the whole time. I'm new to BJJ, so the welcoming atmosphere has made training fun and challenging.
Amazing place! Super friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Nice facility and location. World class instruction!
When it comes to BJJ, this is the best the Madison Area has to offer. Really great atmosphere and the owner and instructor are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the art.
Journey is a fantastic BJJ academy. Cristiano is the best instructor around. He teaches moves that use great control and not just force. His nuance is what makes his teaching especially effective. He explains the motivations and potential counters behind everything he does. The owner, Alex, is also incredibly friendly and super devoted to the study of BJJ. The facility itself is clean, welcoming, and just the right size. Pricing is competitive and you can get very good discounts for committing to a half year or more. I would (and do) recommend it to everyone
I've trained at multiple gyms and joining this gym has been so welcoming. Cristiano is a world class instructor and very helpful. Becoming a member at this gym was a great decision.
High pressure sales tactics and they want a very large commitment. I don't know how good their classes are, but they have false advertising on their windows and want a 4 day a week commitment at $39 / week for an 7-10 year old. That's a lot to expect. Pass.
