I could not recommend Jacksonville Gracie Jiu Jitsu enough for anyone who wants to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! I started their beginner class in January and I can honestly say, this class is the best part of my morning! Everyone here are patient and genuinely want you to grow in your knowledge of this sport. Began training again (13-year layoff) in Feb 2023. It has been nothing less of spectacular. Of course I was nervous starting out, but Master Luiz and Professor Pedro (& entire coaching staff) have been welcoming and always encouraging during my journey. When I looked for bjj instruction, I had no idea how supportive, detailed, and top-notch the entire atmosphere was. I leave exhausted, but fulfilled, satisfied, and always with a smile on my face. I would not choose anywhere else to train bjj. My recommendation, start NOW! You will NOT regret it.

I've been training here for a year after a 10-11 year lay off from jiu-jitsu. I was very nervous about starting to train again, but the professors and students welcomed me with open arms. The quality of instruction is top-notch, but the general feel and attitude in the gym is even better, and that all flows from the top down. The training partners are great, from the hobbyists like me to the active competitors. I highly recommend this gym for anyone looking to better their jiu-jitsu.

Been training here on and off for years. Best jiu-jitsu spot in North Florida by a long shot. Great variety of class times and the instructors are great with teaching all kinds of backgrounds. They are especially amazing with kids. If you want to compete in BJJ this is the place to be but if you just want a great workout, this is also an amazing place.

I did a lot of research on the various schools in Jax before signing up at Luiz Palhares Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I drive about 30 minutes to the class from Ponte Vedra and I can tell you it's well worth the commute. You can never place enough value on a great school, with great people and high quality instructors like this one. The community and camaraderie amongst the members is absolutely amazing. Everyone has been very welcoming, patient and extremely helpful with me on my Jiu Jitsu journey. (4 classes in) I was personally looking for a more traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school and what better place to start with none other than one with an 8th degree Coral belt under Rolls, Rickson and Grandmaster Helio Gracie. Luiz Palhares was one of my biggest draws initially because of his credentials. I must say his son Pedro is also an amazing instructor who actively competes and is ranked 23 in the world. Would you expect anything less with the household he grew up in? He has been great with me and keeps the beginner classes practical and progressive. I am looking forward to learning more and evolving my game under the guidance of the Luiz Palhares Academy. I highly recommend them. Side note: The school is also super clean. I know hygiene is always a concern after “C”, they keep it pristine. I am 230 lbs, 38 years old, retired competitive bodybuilder just to give you a feel for who’s writing this review. When I read reviews I always wonder, "is this person like me", you never know. So hopefully this gives you a better feel. There you have it, go check them out!

The environment at this professional athlete facility is very family orientated. I’ve known several students of Master Luiz Palhares and his son, Pedro, for a number of years. Each spoke about them with admiration and the utmost respect. When my family and I relocated near Jacksonville earlier this year, there was no question as to where I would continue my Jiu Jitsu journey. I have not been disappointed in my decision. The school’s atmosphere has been welcoming and friendly from day one. The classes are organized and expertly taught with a curriculum that is broad in scope to include both the self defense and sportive aspects of the art. With a little research you will find that the instructors here are the closest to the roots and origins of Gracie Jiu Jitsu as you can get. It has my highest recommendation if you are looking to join the team or just stop in and visit while traveling.

As another owner of a local Martial Arts Academy, I can say this is best Jiu-Jitsu school in the area. It is hard to find high ranking Jiu-Jitsu instructors, and a place that is welcoming to everyone. This instructors provide for those looking for self-defense, competition, or just personal growth through martial arts. Classes have clear instruction, and it is not a survival of the fittest environment. There is a great focus on white belts separately from the higher belts, and a methodical transition into safe sparring.

Jacksonville Gracie Jiu Jitsu is one of the, if not the best, Jiu Jitsu Academy’s in the southeastern United States. Master Luiz Palhares is a Red/White belt under Jiu Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie and has been teaching high level Jiu Jitsu for over 40 years. He and his son, Pedro (ranked 21st in the world as a black belt competitor by IBJJF), teach the majority of the classes daily, and train (roll) with their students. They have a great kids program and welcome all ages (over 4) and all levels of experience. The adult ages and experience vary from 14 years thru 60+ and white belt to black belt. All students are friendly, helpful and eager to learn. Additionally, there are no egos while training. This Academy’s location is only several years old and very clean. The training mats are cleaned after each class, which averages 3-4 times a day. The Academy is easy to get to, with ample parking. Come check it out. You won’t be disappointed! Osss

The best BJJ school in Jacksonville! Prof. Luiz Palhares and his son Pedro cover all aspects off BJJ i.e. self defense, and judo, as well as wrestling and muay thai. I cannot speak highly enough on the kids class! My daughters have been training here since they were 5 and are now 9. The kids class is very safe for children to learn in and the coaches' teaching style creates a fun atmosphere. There are always coaches walking around ensuring safety throughout the class. I'd highly recommend both curious adults and kids come see what this school can offer.

Top notch instruction from Master Luiz Palhares and his son, Professor Pedro Palhares. My 10 year old daughter has been going here for a year and a half and I just started a few months ago. This gym has a great family environment and a strong crew of skilled Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners to help you get your game where it needs to be. I wouldn't want to learn from anyone but the best, and these guys are it!

Great experience training here. You'll be greeted with fist bumps and handshakes. Great sportsmanship amongst the students. Friendly environment but come motivated because you're going to get what you pay for in exhaustive training. Master Luiz and Professor Pedro will definitely help you get better one session at a time and you'll see results quickly in both technical skill and physical stamina.

I came into their classes with zero martial arts experience and they were immediately welcoming and friendly. Everyone at the school is also very encouraging and helpful with us newbies. In a very short time period they've taken me from knowing nothing at all to comfortably rolling and having a blast.

Quality instruction from some of the most respected and respectful jiu jitsu instructors out there. I would recommend to anyone looking to improve their BJJ, self-defense, physical health, mental health, and essential characteristics of a human being such as respect, discipline, courage, mental/physical toughness, and perseverance. The dojo creates an awesome atmosphere to be a part of and has served as a home away from home for myself.

Checked out the No Gi class: loved it. Mr. Palhares's son is an excellent and knowledgeable instructor. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere for newbies as well as advanced practitioners. In my opinion, this is as good as it gets in north Florida when it comes to learning Gracie jiu-jitsu.

Unfortunately our experience was not so good. Too much money for the experience both Grandkids experienced. Teenager pulled out! With Good reason The! The younger is on the spectrum, Twice the child was either bullied or not included. I tries to ask why the child could not be included, was told "up to the coach" Livid!
