Gracie Barra Chicago West Loop – The Best Jiu Jitsu Gym in Downtown Chicago. I had a great experience trainning with High top level Black Belt Marcelo Dourado and the Legend Carlos Lemos. Amazing Jiu Jitsu school. We have joined as a family and it has changed our lives. The instructors are very respectful and experienced in welcoming new beginners like ourselves. My 3.5 year old is making new friends and even though he trains together with kids of much older age like 10, he is having a blast and I always feel it is a safe space for him. There are options for classes at different times of the day, which allows for some flexibility. A month in, we are already feeling the difference mentally and physically. Strongly recommended!

I visited the West Loop gym while in the city and I was very impressed with the professors and how welcoming the whole team was! When I went in two professors and another student stayed back to give me a fantastic lesson and gave me really great advice to improve. I am still very new to the sport and something that constantly impresses me about Gracie Barra is the willingness for very experienced people to take the time to help me improve and make it clear I am welcome. I would definitely recommend going!

I have been training with Gracie Barra at west loop for almost one year and I LOVE it!!! I am a small girl with no previous experience in martial but I found it safe and fun to train here. Highly recommend going to GB West Loop. It is perfect for anyone looking to start their jui jitsu journey, from having any level of grappling experience or just want to learn self defense. All the instructors are very welcoming & they want to pass on their knowledge onto all their students. The community has great camaraderie and there are no big egos here. Gracie Barra Chicago is awesome. I am based out of GBChandler in AZ, and i travel for work. Being a visitor from out of town dropping in on a new gym can sometimes seem like a challenge. NOT HERE!! Professor Carlos and his staff actually knew my Professor and immediately welcomed me in with warmth and grace. And.. excellent training. We worked on the basic curriculum and he had some nice cues and teaching points that instantly added to my game. The format was the same Gracie Barra format i have grown to Love and Trust! Overall it was the type of place that you really want to be “from”. It was great and I will come by every time i am in Chicago !!!! Thank you Professor!

I've trained BJJ since 2017 and I've been training at West Loop since 2022. In fact, one of the first things I did when I moved to Chicago was Google "Gracie Barra Chicago" and I found West Loop. The professors and coaches here are amazing and the community at West Loop is strong. Carlos Lemos is an engaging professor who knows his stuff! I love Coach Alex's teaching style and how he lets us roll after drilling and Professor Carlones is great too. All the teachers have their own styles and you can learn from each of them.

I attended a couple of sessions at Gracie Barra West Loop while visiting Chicago with my family. I am a hobbyist and I was looking for a place with great jiu jitsu and culture. I have been training at GB Chicago-West Loop for about 6 months now and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. The professors, Evandro Campelo Jr. and Carlos Lemos Jr. are extremely high level black belts. They break down complicated moves/skills in an easily digestible way for everyone to understand. Additionally, they are able to uphold the integrity of the learning experience all while maintaining a fun and joyful environment. If you need a catalyst to better build your discipline, confidence, BJJ skillset, and sense of community, then this is the place for you.

Love this place for my son. He is 4yrs old and since day one he fell in love with Jiu Jitsu. He goes in excited to start because Prof Campelo is so good at what he does. My boy feels comfortable, confident, and has tons of fun. My boy is learning valuable skills that he can apply if ever needed. If you have a young one bring them here so they too can defend themselves if needed. Everyone there is professional and respectful. Highly recommend this place.

Loved the 1.5 years spent at Gracie Barra. I came in knowing nothing about martial arts and immediately got hooked. The classes are great for either beginners or advanced participants. The coaches have a strong depth of expertise and bring in guest professors for a variety of teachings. The location is easy to get to and well maintained. Highly recommend!

Cannot emphasize the amazing impact of processor Carlones and Professor Rick instructions. Learned so much in a short time. I went to GB Chicago west loop as a new white belt. Trained here for only 6 months as I had to move out of the city. Been to couple of other top schools after that. But I would say what i learned here, especially the details in the most basic techniques, are the ones I still use effectively even after 2 years of jiu jitsu(not long I know). All schools basically teach the same techniques. But what makes the difference is the way its taught. And I am grateful to both professors for being so amazing at what they do best and for teaching us in a way that is engraved into the brain. Even if I am injured and return after a couple of months, the techniques kick in subconsciously. That's how deep their teachings are nailed into the brain. Again this might be different for different individuals. But to know that you must give it a try. So don't hesitate to try this location out. They're warm and welcome. Including the students.

I typically don't write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience considering joining this school. I was considering enrollment, but the overly aggressive sales tactics were off-putting. Specifically, the phrase "don't waste my time and vice versa" was used, which I found inappropriate, especially after communicating that the week of the 29th would be the earliest I could engage due to prior commitments. My lack of immediate response was not out of disregard; I was simply occupied with a close friend's wedding. While I understand the importance of maintaining active student enrollments and its economic impact, I would appreciate a less aggressive approach. Receiving multiple communications via email, text, and phone calls felt overwhelming/unnecessary.
