His instruction is world-class, and he brings that same high level of training to every class he teaches—including the kids’ classes. I have been going here for almost 2 months. Instructors are all great and do a good job conducting class for the group and giving extra 1 on 1 help when they see you need a little extra help with something. The atmosphere is very welcoming and supportive among the members. Everyone is always helping each other get better. They also give a good military discount which is always awesome.

I chose this academy mainly because of the 6:00 am offering and also many other reviews talked about how friendly everyone was. I had very little martial arts experience prior to joining and I’ve found the community to be incredibly encouraging, friendly, while also challenging me to push myself. The Academy is definitely my family's home away from home. I've visited and checked out other academies before officially signing up my kids. When I walked in the academy's door it was definitely a wonderful family based vibe. My kids have grown so much in confidence and resilience. They have improved quickly in school. We love this academy. We have been apart of this academy for over 5 years and at one point every member of the family was taking lessons. Professor Daniel nurtures a great, safe, welcoming, and clean environment. Professor Daniel is one of the best in this field (still actively competing and holding the highest titles) and has an innate skill in sharing this art form to the youngest of his students. If I could give them 10 stars I would. The academy is professional and family oriented. Marina makes you feel welcomed the moment you talk to her. Not only has my son learned Ju Jitsu but Professor teaches the kids important lessons about respect, kindness, hard work & dedication. When I brought my son here years ago, I was frustrated with his impulsiveness. I knew he needed something outside of our home to teach him self discipline. Professor does that for him. I don’t have a single bad thing to say about this academy. Professor Tavares expertise, experience and accomplishments are obvious. He runs a fantastic academy where belts are earned on skill and accomplishment and not given out freely. This is a real BJJ Academy. The students and instructors regularly compete in local, national and international tournaments and the wall of championship medals speaks for the academy’s legitimacy.

I have trained martial arts all my life! I started boxing at four years old. I just finished my third week at Daniel Travares Academy. I’ve trained almost every major martial art and I have done Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 16 years. I should mention I am 66 years old, a lifetime of study. I’ve never been treated so good! I am already a part of the family. The level of skill and the helpfulness of every student is tremendous. They are definitely a Team!!! There are many medals and many trophies. My son, wife and I competed in the march 7 tournament. The first thing i’d say as a father is the level of attention and care for the safety of the younger children competing was amazing. sometimes at other matches i wonder if the referees care. In this gym my wife and i were incredibly impressed at the attention the referees (which was the professor himself and i’m assuming another high level associate) had paid to the way their little bodies fall and made sure no small competitors would fall awkwardly or in a dangerous way or get an arm ripped off.
As a competitor from another gym i felt welcomed and respected not just because i was competing but simply for being a human. At no time whatsoever did i even witness any mocking or sneering or disrespect to anyone at all. it was a great experience for me as a white belt and reassured me that jiu jitsu is the sport i’ve been missing all along. i’m 37 and have competed in many other sports where there can sometimes be verbal abuse from the other side. after competing in this sport and in this gym i get a sense that the jiu jitsu community is exactly that, a community. I could liken it to the gym i attend where all are welcome and all people are properly treated and that’s how you end up having a blast even for me who took a hard loss but still had fun.
If I could leave 10 stars I would. This a perfect BJJ school if you are new or someone that has been training for a while and wants to get to the next level. Everyone is friendly, competitive, and respectful. Daniel Tavares truly cares about his students and their success in learning Jiu Jitsu at the highest level. I had the pleasure of stopping in to train while in town for business and had a great experience. Very welcoming environment with great people and instructors! I wish I'd had time to make a second class but was not able due to changing travel arrangements. I would definitely recommend this school and hope to be back one day.

I've done my homework on most of the BJJ gyms in the area, and Daniel Tavares' gym is the most decorated by far. He's the only REAL Brazilian teaching in the area, and he comes from a very well-respected jiu-jitsu lineage in Brazil. He's the most accomplished among all instructors, and the way he introduces technique to his students is well presented. The negative comment mentioned that he yelled at his students for training in other gyms?! First, I train every once in a while at Marcelo Garcia's Alliance BJJ Academy in Manhattan, and not once has Daniel ever scolded me. We have a few students that train and teach at other gyms, so I don't understand what this person's trying to say. Second, I've watched videos of Daniel coaching some of my teammates, and I don't think he raises his voice other than that.
About the scheduling, sometimes the gym is closed when I would like it to be opened. However, what gym DOESN't do that. If you get a chance to know Daniel and this jiu-jitsu team, all it takes is a phone call or text for him or one of the teammates to open the gym.
The guy even had the nerve to call Daniel a pothead? Rude. Daniel is a father and a respectable person.
