I dropped in tonight while traveling for work and it was a fantastic experience. The atmosphere was incredibly welcoming, and I felt at home, honestly. There was a wide range of skill levels on the mats, and one thing I noticed was the strong foundation displayed by the lower belts, which clearly points to top-notch instruction. 👏👏💪🏼💪🏼The teaching was clear, thorough, and engaging. Overall, Checkmat is a great place to train, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good workout, solid rolls and a nice variety of looks on the mat. Will be back, for sure.
Awesome establishment. The trainers are very knowledgeable and it’s in a great location. Friendly people to spar with and the classes are long enough to get a great workout in. I would highly recommend this place for your children or for anyone in that matter that is looking to improvement their skills, or even just to pick up a new hobby.
Dropped in twice during vacation. Windson, the owner, was very welcoming, as were all of the regulars. Very knowledgeable instruction, great use of time, and plenty of fun rolls. They’ve got a great schedule of different times, gi/no gi, wrestling, fundamentals, etc. I’ll train here next time I’m in town, for sure!
I was fortunate enough to visit town and dropped in for a class. They were awesome to work with. They were all welcoming and friendly and it’s an incredible workout.
I visited with a friend and Winston was professional and very welcoming. I unfortunately could not do most things due to physical limitations nor could I join however the people were nice & even for a one-time drop in definitely recommend going here if you’re in the area.

Competition to self defense this is the best gym around. Downside I’ve lost over 50 lbs and gained abs and muscle and none of my old clothes fit. Never felt better or liked a group of people more.
Great people that will help you along and push you as far as you want to go mentally and physically. World championship skill set that will roll with beginners.
My family loves this gym! Everyone at the gym, from the TWO World Champion Professors to the higher belts through white belts have something to teach you about the sport or life. Checkmat Charleston is a fantastic jiu jitsu school with caring and loving instructors and training partners. Honeslty I have a closer relationship with my jiu jitsu family than my Parents or siblings. Its more than a jiu jitsu school to me its my second home. I highly recommend joining our family.

Checkmat Charleston is a great place to train. The coaches are top notch and the new facility is amazing. If you want to get in shape and learn a skill come give it a try. Everyone from the higher belts down are respectful and want everyone to have fun and learn.

This is by far the best Jui jitsu school in Charleston. Thiago Silva World Competor is the head coach has a wonderful presents on the mat , techniques are great. My game has completely changed. Professor Bill is a no nonsense kind of guy but wants the best school and he has done that. If you want to train at the best Checkmat Charleston is the place. We also have had Michelle Nicolini and Chico Mendas as guess coaches and semniars with Leo Vievira.

Bill Dillard (owner) and his staff are welcoming, friendly, and highly knowledgeable about BJJ - on top of that they are excellent teachers. Walking into my first BJJ class was intimidating. Intimidating may be a understatement. I was terrified, petrified and filled with self doubt. This isn’t coming from someone who doesn’t believe in hard work. I was in good shape and had a good sense of confidence. Reaching the point where I was actually walking through the front door of a school took 6 long months of talking without action. One of those people I spoke to was Professor Bill at Checkmat. His calm and yet excited demeanor immediately put me at rest. A few days later I was out front of his school, Checkmat Charleston. Flash forward several months and I could never imagine the friendships created over the hard yet gratifying experience of Jiu Jitsu. Checkmat Charleston is the perfect environment for creating friendships, learning some killer BJJ, crushing fear and self doubt. This a wonderful place to train or just get in shape. Professor Bill is an extraordinary teacher. His knowledge of BJJ seems endless. He explains and demonstrates in a easily understood way. Bill is one of the few teachers in the area who actually gets to know his students. I can write an entire blog post about my positive experience with Checkmat. Take that first step and come check them out.
This guy is not stable at all. At first he seems calm and reasonable, but then he can explode into a rage. Specially if in a training you happen to beat him in front of others. Best avoid this place.
