A great place with both an atmosphere for competitors that want to train hard, or those who just want to improve their Bjj game. Very welcoming environment for individuals or families. Can’t recommend it enough. Go experience it for yourself!
This is a place where you can be challenged and molded in the best way possible. If you have limits, they will be tested and broken in such a way that you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner! This space has allowed our family to train, sweat and GROW!

This past summer I went to Brownsville to visit some family and while on my trip I decided to try out jiujitsu at Checkmat BTX and I was hooked from the beginning! Professor Jose is amazing and taught me so many things when I took his classes. He persuaded me to keep going once I got back home, so I found the nearest Checkmat near me and started taking classes there. Thank you so much to the staff at Checkmat BTX for making me feel welcomed and setting me on the right path to go forward with my jiujitsu journey. I will be coming back when I see my family again.

Professor Jose is an incredible coach with a deep knowledge and understanding of the game. He is super patient and his instructions/teachings are well explained. He keeps a super clean sanctuary and it’s obvious he takes pride in helping students become the best version of themselves that they can be, whatever stage in the game they are. I’ve been in many schools where the name of the game is to smash newcomers, but professor Jose let me express my abilities, let me work from my tool bag, explained how I could be better in certain areas and carefully led me through an hour of rolling and I didn’t leave injured at all. What an amazing experience!!! So much respect for Checkmate Jiujitsu and professor Jose. I will be back to continue becoming the best/strongest version of myself that I can be.
