Checkmat Brentwood is amazing. My children started a little over a year ago and are in love with the sport thanks to the amazing coaching of the Checkmat Brentwood coaches and proffesor. I even ended up starting my jiu-jitsu journey not long after. Even though I have a spinal cord injury, Professor Thiago, Coach Steve, Coach Car and Coach Gabi help me adapt and fight to the best of my abilities. My kids, 4 and 7, have become even more confident, kind and strong. On top of all of that their prices are amazing and they don't mandate a Checkmat gi, even though most buy them unlike most gyms were your required to buy their overpriced gis. Checkmat Brentwood is waiting for you and your kids to join the family. You won't be disappointed!

My son has been attending Checkmat for a little over a year now. The staff there are amazing. They are very welcoming, encouraging and positive role models for their students. My sons confidence and ability to focus have improved greatly since starting at Checkmat. When I pick him up he has a big smile on his face and I know he has had fun. It’s great to have a positive place where my son can learn skills, make new friends, and get in some physical activity all at the same time. I appreciate Checkmat and all they do for the kids 😀

My five year old son started training at Checkmat earlier this year and we are have been very happy with them. We wanted him to enter martial arts for the training in focus, discipline, and confidence. Coach Tiago, Coach Steve, Coach Gabi, and Coach Maricar have all been wonderful during the learning process. We would definitely recommend it to any family considering joining the Checkmat team.

This is my sons first time in an activity. The instructors are wonderful and they really take the time to talk to the younger kids when they get upset about loosing a match. Not everyone is suitable to teach all age groups but I definitely believe my son can continue with the program as he gets older because they have amazing staff members.

Prior to moving to the area, I would train here during the holidays while on military leave. I received a warm welcome from the coaches and the other students. The gym had a very positive "family-like" aura and I always enjoyed my time training there. After leaving the military I continued to train here and I've never been happier with that decision. Oftentimes, it can be intimidating for new practitioners to try BJJ. Checkmat Brentwood provides a safe, welcoming, and fun environment. Whether your goal is to lose weight, learn BJJ, or compete at a high level... this is the spot for you. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience throughout the ranks. The members are extremely kind and make the practices highly enjoyable! Professor Thiago provides world-class instruction and does so in a patient, and concise manner. He truly invests his time to develop each individual student according to their goals. This is also an excellent choice for parents. Checkmat Brentwood has an amazing after-school program, and kids jiujitsu! If you are looking to change your life, or get your child involved in a sport then look no further.

100% recommend this place to anyone looking for a new addition to their workout, law enforcement, or anyone wanting to learn self defense. The coaches Thiago and Steve are super attentive, the class sizes are not overwhelming, and you get to learn from one of the best black belts in the world. There’s no egos at this gym and everyone gets along both inside and out of the gym, absolutely check this place out.

Great place to learn Jiu jitzu.! No mater what age or condition your in, you won’t be disappointed with Checkmat. Coach Thiago brings years of experience to this academy. His knowledge is 2nd to none. My two sons (ages 6 and 8) began jiu jitzu over the summer. They both love it. So much so they have private lessons each week in addition to their regular classes. Coach Thiago and the staff provide an amazing experience for both children and adults. Highly recommend Checkmat.

From day one, Checkmat Brentwood has been a welcoming environment. There’s a good mix of people - all respectful and willing to turn up or down the intensity as needed. Super safe and clean. Professor Thiago is one of best Jiu Jitsu coaches I have trained with. He will give you just the right amount of push and motivation to meet your goals.

From the training mats to the competition mats, Checkmat Brentwood has given my boys confidence, strength and determination. The structure and positivity Coach Thiago provides are not only lessons learned on the mats, but in their daily life. I can’t say enough about the entire Checkmat Family and would highly recommend them.

This a great place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. My daughter has been going there for 2 months and it’s been a great experience for her. She’s learning how to defend herself, discipline while having a great time. She’s getting great social interactions with kids her age. Most of all she’s having fun. Would definitely recommend.

Both of my kids trains here 3x a week. The place is clean, neat, and a family oriented. They’ve learned so much from their coach Thiago. They enjoy training with other kids as well. I noticed that the kids that are here are very respectful.

I suggest you sign your child up for this class. My 4 year old has enjoye his time so far and they really care about the children, they have really good communication and they take the time to send little videos which is great because of the COVID restrictions!

Awesome school to learn jiu jitsu! I joined Checkmat Brentwood a few months ago with zero experience in jiu jitsu, but was welcomed and supported greatly by all members and coaches. In the past few months I've noticed my skill, fitness and confidence improve greatly! I highly recommend Checkmat Brentwood for anyone interested in BJJ!

Highly recommend Checkmat! My daughter adores them, and she learned so much in few months. Gaby and Thiago are caring, professional and follows the covid protocol as well. We visited 2 other Jiu-Jitsu facilities before Checkmat and I am very glad we found them. It's a great place for kids to build confidence and feel safe, have fun and release some energy! Also, the kickboxing on Fridays is a plus :)

Whether you’re looking to learn practical self-defense tactics, or someone looking to hone their skills for competition – Checkmat in Brentwood is where you want to be. Steve/Thiago are top-notch instructors and create a very welcoming environment for all levels from beginner to advanced students. I have been training here for approximately 12 months and have improved tremendously. In my opinion, this is the best location in the East Bay to learn BJJ or advance your pre-existing game. I have trained in other gyms in the area, and I have yet to experience this level of personalized instruction anywhere else. If you are interested in learning BJJ I suggest starting here! Classes available for adults and children, not to mention the pricing is great. Check out their website for more information.

In looking for a martial art for our 7 & 8 year olds, can't go far without hearing of BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Not far from our house, we decided to check out Checkmat. Conveniently located with good class hours, on the average price range, BUT we ultimately could not choose it as there was a lack of discipline. The kids were allowed to run all over, sometimes allowed and sometimes when the teacher was asking the kids to be quiet. If there was respect demanded as good with a martial art, we would've considered staying. As such, could only give 3 stars.
