Great place with really excellent teaching level and also very welcoming
I was in town for a night and messaged over to take a class. Really glad I did. The instruction was excellent and I felt very welcomed. The flow was great, and I was super impressed at the technical skill of the lower belts. Everyone did great and you can see this gym is filled with connections. The coach knew every students story, not just their name and you can just smell when you stumble on someplace that’s just a cut above the rest.
Great place, made some new friends and looking forward to a longer visit in the future!

Great group of students and great instruction. I dropped in for 2 days and learned a different style but extremely effective. The name of the school is unique and symbolic of their efforts. The students are extremely humble as well as the professor. He is a master of his craft and provides meticulous detail in his instructions. Ooos. Semper Fi.

My 10-yr-old son did two drop-in no-gi classes while we were visiting Myrtle Beach. He was welcomed by Professor Leo and the other students, learned some new techniques, including a new sweep, and had a LOT of fun. He wants to return to Myrtle Beach just to do more classes here. Now that says a lot. GREAT instruction and environment. Highly, highly recommend.

Great teacher, great training partners, great atmosphere.
Its like fight club..... Minus the blood and anarchistic/nihilistic overtones. of course, lol.
Just remember the 8 rules of checkmat myrtle beach....
the first rule of checkmat is to tell your friends about checkmat, the second rule of checkmat is to tell your friends about checkmat.
I can't tell you the other rules you'll just have to come check out the gym to find out.

I had been looking to try BJJ for a while. I looked at the websites of some of the gyms in the area and was immediately drawn to Checkmat. Seeing videos of Master Leo competing at the highest levels showed me he was the real deal. Since my first class he has made me feel welcome. The training partners there are great and always willing to help out where they can. It has become a second home for me and I love going to class and open mat. I have recently signed up my son for lessons and he loves it. Master Leo and Christy are fantastic with the kids and the kids love them. I would never have imagined competing in BJJ but with all of the support and encouragement I have received, I gave it a shot. It was the second best BJJ decision I made after joining this gym! Thank you Master Leo for all of your work and knowledge.

If you’re looking for something to help your kids learn self defense, discipline and teamwork then this is the best place to come. My child has been coming here for a year and we haven’t regretted one day we’ve taken him there. Master Leo and Mrs Christy has helped my child improve mentality and physically. I would like to say thank this place and the amazing trainers for doing a great job.

The Instructor is top notch! He is an excellent teacher! Sensei Leo is very technical and pays attention to every detail. BJJ is a game of inches, and he teaches every inch. Leo is also an ACTIVE competitor, hence spilling the sweat alongside his class. He genuinely cares about every individual's jiu-jitsu journey. Nice to be at a place where everyone matters, from white belt to the black belt. Last but not least, the academy is modern and super clean. Highly recommend!

Great gym! I dropped in for classes again on another vacation. The new owners were just as knowledgeable and welcoming. I learned some very nice sweeps, had some challenging rolls, and left smiling each day. I'd love to train here regularly. Definitely check out Checkmat Myrtle Beach, you won't be disappointed.

This is a review coming from an experienced BJJ practitioner who has been to numerous BJJ schools around the world and the country, and who takes it seriously.
Hoshihara Tom and his school is a legit school. I dropped into a class because my work brought me to the area, and immediately I knew this was a really good school. In the area there may be some other MMA schools with a BJJ program that have fancy equipment, polished mats, a smoothie bar, etc etc that draw in a newbie, but they lack what this instructor brings to the table. REAL AND TECHNICALLY DRIVEN JIU JITSU.
Please note that I am not a student there as I live in Arizona and train here, but I felt that this school and my experience there warranted a review.
If you want to not just do jiujitsu, but get REALLY GOOD at jiujitsu, I would recommend this place. The instructor and the students are very very welcoming, but they will make sure you do work while you're there.

Sensei Ton is an amazing instructor. He has been training my son for about 8 months now. He treats everyone like family and has a huge heart. I've never seen anyone connect with kids so well. He is a very detailed teacher and is always willing to help those who are struggling. If you are looking for self-defense, jiu jitsu, or just something to pass the time, this is an awesome place to do it! My son has made so many friends and his confidence has sky rocketed. Easily one of the best decisions I've ever made! I came to the academy with the intention of helping my son make some new friend, and ended up signing myself up for classes and making some friends of my own. The beginner/ adult class is such a fun and relaxing environment. I would give ten stars if I could!

They have great after school program, the kids love it. Tom is a pro with kids and his knowledge of the sport is impeccable. The older guys are also really cool to watch when they have their practices. Such a fun place!!
