This is a great dojo with excellent, attentive instructors. You can tell they absolutely love what they're doing. Their joy sets the tone that students play along to. I genuinely love going to class. Even on days I'm exhausted, I know when I leave I'll feel like a million bucks.
Our son loves his dojo and says, "It's the best place ever!" We've seen him thrive over the years working with this group. Sensei Anne has been so incredibly supportive over the years. A big thank you to Senseis Anne, Eric, Jack & Brian and Mr. Christian!
I can’t say enough great things about Championship Martial Arts Oviedo! From the moment you walk in, the staff is welcoming and incredibly knowledgeable. The instructors are fantastic with students of all ages and skill levels, creating an environment that’s both fun and focused on personal growth. My children have gained so much confidence, discipline, and respect through their programs. The curriculum is well-structured, and they truly care about each student’s progress. Highly recommend this school for anyone looking to improve their martial arts skills or just build a strong foundation in discipline and fitness!
This place rocks. Our family of 6 have been attending classes, tournaments and celebrations for about 3 years. Instructors and senseis have been doing an amazing job in training and encouraging us in every aspect. Make no mistake though, this is NOT A BELT FACTORY, meaning we all have to constantly improve and challenge ourselves to progress to new belt. Some competitors will give you new belt every 3 months and you'll never really learn anything.
Nothing but respect and gratitude for Senseis Ann, Matt and David and young senseis Olivia and Tyler.
We have been part of CMA for nearly 5 years. Even after we moved 40 miles away, we chose to stick with the dojo because of their integrity, compassion, and genuine caring for each and every student. Anything we've brought to their attention has been met with the utmost respect and desire to help my kids. The students definitely come first at CMA Oviedo.
Definitely a worthy investment in my daughter. The instructors (sensei Anne and sensei olivia and Adam especially!!) have gone above and beyond, staging various creative courses every week with homework to reinforce learnings like cleaning up, listening, organization etc. every month there are events like a bounce house, beach day, popsicles. Everyone is so invested in the kids even though the kids may be difficult. A big thank you to cma-Oviedo for making this a fun and enriching experience for my daughter.
We can't say enough positives about CMA. We are so happy our son started as not only is he learning the physical aspects of martial arts, but he's learning such important life skills that are part of martial arts. It's such a fun, encouraging, and positive atmosphere, he loves it!
We have been taking our son here for the last 4-5 months. We have noticed a significant difference in him over those months in his attitude, confidence, and focus at school. As kids, all they care about is getting the next belt or another stripe; but as parents, all we care about is helping them learn respect, focus, confidence, and teamwork(to name a few). I can say with much certainty that his repeat attendance has allowed him to improve upon these aspects. The staff is very helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable. Can the cost be trying at times? Of course it can but I'm willing to make the sacrifice if it helps him at school and at home.
My son has been a student at CMA Oviedo for 18 months and this experience has transformed him in many ways. He has become more confident, athletic & respectful just to name a few. The Sensei’s truly care about the students and are excellent instructors, coaches & mentors. Thank you CMA Oviedo!
We have enjoyed our experience here. The senseis are patient and engaging. They keep the kids moving and get down on their level to talk to them if there is a problem. I needed to hold one of my kids back at belt testing time due to some behavioral issues and the sensi was 100% on board with waiting until things improved and spoke with my child about his behavior.
I can't thank Championship Martial Arts Oviedo enough for what they have done for my daughter. Other than give her stellar karate instruction, they have had a lasting positive impact on my child. My child was very timid and under confident. CMA instilled confidence, perseverance and physical strength. She is now a black belt and is a changed individual. The instructors at the Oviedo location are highly skilled, supportive and engaging. I highly reccomend CMA Oviedo. The best decision I ever made for my child!!!
We really enjoy CMA Oviedo. My kids have been going there for almost 2 years and they have not only learned about self defense and the art of martial arts. They have grown so much in perseverance, self confidence and humility. The senseis are amazing and I totally recommend this dojo.
So pleased with Oviedo CMA! The instructors are wonderful with kids and the positive, growth-oriented lessons they promote have been wonderful for building my shy 10yo's confidence. Added bonus: The adorable kids + joyful atmosphere feel like therapy. I always leave my son's lessons feeling lighter.
I have been nothing but impressed with CMA Oviedo. All the Sensei’s are incredible and care and know the kids by name. Like any other extra activity, it takes commitment and $$$. I sometimes question how much I have to spend and on what but it’s been worth every penny seeing my girls learn these skills! We LOVE CMA Oviedo!!
We have been taking our son for the last 5 months. He absolutely loves it. All of the instructors are wonderful. They are all great teachers and help us lead our children in a positive way. We have been very happy with our experience at CMA Oviedo.
Went to Championship Martial Arts since it was called Central Florida Championship Karate (CFCK) and the teachers here were amazing. I really enjoyed myself and it taught me very valuable lessons.
My 10 year old son just started at Championship Martial Arts and he loves it. The positive energy in this place is palpable and, so far, I am very impressed!
I went to this school for 10 years and loved every minute of it! I took a break and came back because I missed it so much. The instructors are incredibly helpful and caring. It is rare to find people who care as much about their students as individuals as this school does. I spent the majority of my childhood here and learned a lot about patience, self-discipline, and respect. I would recommend this to all children and adults :)
After going around the area to find a good place for my son to continue his Karate development we landed at Championship do to there price and instructors. The instructors have been very helpful not only to my son but also to my wife and I. My son loves Championship and talks about it all the time to us and his friends. All his teachers know all about his Karate and what belts he earns. Overall we have only had good experiences with Championship Martial Arts in Oviedo. They also provide a lot of other after school as well as parent date night activities.
EDIT: Originally a 1 star review. After a bad 2024 experience, I feel like my feedback was listened to, and there has been course correction. They have had better experiences.
My children have attended CMA Oviedo for 2.5 years. We started in early 2022. Karate was the first sport my son showed any interest in. It was fun and something they both looked forward to. There use to be clear and expected skills prior to each belt test. I saw growth and joy. Starting in the spring of 2024, things changed. My son has left upset and sometimes crying for the past 3 weeks. Karate is a big investment and with that, there should be a good return. When your students aren't meeting arbitrary expectations, it's a reflection of the school just as much as it is of the student.
The only thing that hasn't changed is the push to get kids to bring in their friends and promote joining CMA (such as leaving a Google review). 🎟🎟🎟🎟🎟
There are some really great teachers at this location (some that have already gone) and my kids only kept going because of you. Literally, you're why they've kept going.
I'll start off by saying that I have a child that has been going here for most of his life and he loves it and continues to be dedicated and spends a lot of time here. This has been a great experience for him, even though it has been very expensive for us to pay for. However this review is not based on his experience but based on mine as an adult student attending the adult classes. This may not be relevant for the earlier classes that are geared towards younger students. Specifically, this is a review of the Tuesday and Thursday night adult classes.
I have been going here for over a year and a half. I have enjoyed all of the staff members and it shows that they care about their job as well as their students. However, there are some problems with the curriculum. First, the curriculum seems to be changing constantly. When I first started, there was a set of kata (forms) that was being taught but then that started to change to wrist-grab escapes, then to XMA (eXtreme Martial Arts focuses more on style and showmanship rather than effectiveness and strength). Also, once you learn one form, you'll never go over it again and it's quite easy to forget it. Same with kihon (basic techniques), there isn't much focus on going over the basics like doing various drills to develop proper stances, punches, kicks, etc.
I also find that CMA has a bit of an identity problem. The sign on the front of the building says "KARATE" in big red letters. They call it a dojo and the students wear the karate gis, however there isn't much focus on traditional karate. There were times when they touched upon some techniques from the Chito-Ryu style but that hasn't been the case lately. The curriculum also includes some boxing techniques. When I first started, I would hear a few Japanese terms being used (and sometimes being misused) such as the names of stances, but I don't think I've heard a Japanese term being used for quite some time now.
Currently, the classes are a bit overcrowded with one sensei overseeing a group of 30+ students, and the class is only 40 minutes long so it's difficult for one sense to give much attention to an individual student in a short period of time.
Also, they will aggressively push you into signing up for a 3 year contract. In addition, they will try to encourage you to upgrade to their "Master's Club" or "Black Belt Club". You will be excluded from joining in some activities in the class if you don't join these clubs. For example, if you want to spar, you'll need to be in one of these clubs otherwise you're limited to shadow-boxing. Master's Club adds some lessons on XMA techniques with weapons, such as twirling and tossing a bo, spinning kamas, etc. You will not learn how to use these weapons for self-defense.
If you're serious about learning traditional karate, I would consider finding a nearby Shotokan Karate dojo that constantly keeps up with the three K's; kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). The various martial arts schools in the area will allow you to give them a try before signing up and I would encourage you to try out a few of them to see what works best for you.
The sensei is great there and my son enjoy it. The reduction of the 2 stars is because the pushy sales tactics. Its simply tacky and frustrating. She literally pulls parents into the office in the middle class to discuss pay options. Its low rent and takes away from the experience. Paying around $1600 is pricey and parents should be forced into a hard sell. Given the options and let them decide. If this were changed, I'd rate it higher.
McDojo alert. Enjoyed this Dojo early on but then enrollment shot up. The Dojo was packed wall to wall with students and parents and our child did not get any real one on one time with the sensei’s. Also, did not care for the black belt club sales pitch. They announced my child had been invited to join in public without speaking to us 1st. This created added pressure on us to sign a three year contract instead of us riding out our one year contract (for more money of course). The high pressure sales pitch just ruined it all for us along with the packed Dojo.
If you are looking for Karate with a hard sell, then this is the place for you. Your child will learn some Karate, but you will be push to make a financial decision as if you were at a car dealership. I was told I had to sign up that day to keep the incentivized price. No thanks, I'll take my business elsewhere.
We have been members of this gym for over two years. My son was 5 minutes late because of a dentist appointment and we had to help my father during a heart procedure today. Brian yelled at him without even letting him explain himself. We are never late and have been dedicated members of this gym, I understand having standards but the students should be able to give a reasonable explanation as to their tardiness without being yelled at until in tears. This place is completely downhill without sensei Adam.
My husband requested to cancel his karate contract for his child due to familial hardship and inability to make it to classes any longer. He requested a cancellation form and the contract itself that he signed, numerous times. He was told a week ago that both would be sent “as soon as possible” (after they kept him on the phone half an hour asking extremely personal and inappropriate questions about WHY he was attempting to cancel) and also told him they weren’t “sure” if they even had the contract itself. Meanwhile, obviously intentionally, his next payment is coming due while they ignore his requests. His child also stated the dojo gives a speech every class on how to get others to join. So part of what you’re paying for for your child is a sales pitch. This place is a scummy business. Would not recommend you enroll your kid here when there are other real dojos. Funny enough, I speak from experience because I hold a black belt in Shotokan - so I grew up in karate dojos and can attest to the fact that none of this is normal or common.
Bait & switch sales tactics. Talk to them on the phone and work out a deal then once there totally different package and not even close. Extremely disappointed.
This place is place is all about taking your money, my son stop going there February they charge my account the next in March my husband called them they said they would fix the problem nothing happen now two months later they charge my account again for nothing I took my son out of karate two months ago now I have to go there in person to get my money back 😡😡😡 never again I'll go somewhere else they just lost themselves a good customer
