Mr. Joe is a fantastic instructor for our kids. He has a great demeanor for teaching elementary-age boys and girls. He has a great school with lots of class time options to pick from. (Just fyi he has a variety of classes for adults as well.)
I bring my 6 year to Jiu-jitsu, he loves it! Everyone is professional and welcoming. I highly recommend the bullyproof classes for children.
As a beginner I was a bit nervous going to my first class for the Women Empowered program. But the instructors made me feel comfortable right away and were friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoy the course structure and focus on mastering the techniques. Eager to continue with the program.
Update: 6-19-21 I wanted to provide an update to my review 4 months ago. I can't emphasize enough how great this place has been to learn BJJ and to make friends with a new community. Joe and the rest of the members make you feel at home, helping you with each move, and there are no egos. People are always trying to help you improve and I'm sure the classes will continue to get bigger. To me, the best part about the CTC program is the Combatives. You are constantly learning new ways to improve your technique and build your confidence to defend yourself. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is a begginer and who is experienced with BJJ. Original I attended my first session this past weekend with Joe upon moving from another CTC. Joe is an awesome instructor. He's very calm and always there to help you learn the material. The environment is friendly and the course instruction is similar to my old CTC. I highly recommend this place to all potential students and other students with previous JJ experience.
This is a nice friendly and welcoming place, whether new to, or even if you have years of experience in either GJJ or BJJ. Everyone was very welcoming. Very egoless!
I had my first class with them this week. Rob is a great instructor and Joe runs a great facility. The formatting of the class provides a great environment for learning.
We are a few weeks in and absolutely love it! I am doing the class with my 5yo son. Its amazing what I'm picking up even with practicing on a 5yo. But the instruction, the message, the discipline it instills is amazing! 39 and 5 yo approved!
The instructor was awsome, will have a few more visits. They give you a good 10 days to try their training which is great!
Clean mats, great atmosphere to learn very practical Brazilian Jiujitsu. Joe is a great teacher and creates a very welcoming environment.
This is a wonderful jiu-jitsu school. It has solid curricula for its programs, and the instruction is great. One thing I like: students in the introductory (Combatives) program do not spar. It is entirely technique focused. This creates a healthy training environment in which people really focus on key details. I've been training here for roughly 4 months... learned a ton and met some very nice people. Berwyn Heights BJJ is great!
They offer a 10 day free trial which I took advantage of. However, after the first lesson I decided to sign up for a year membership. Got a legit Gracie Gi for free! The environment is very welcoming and peaceful, while the techniques are precise and deadly. I love this academy. The professionalism and camaraderie is next level. The curriculum is the result of decades of wisdom from the original line (Helio - Rorion - Ryron & Rener - Joe). Family friendly!
Joe Lilly: Is the best jiu-jitsu instructor, that I have met. I’m a military spouse and I have always wanted a real place to train and work hard and belong. I drive from Va to Md to train and it’s totally worth the drive. He is a people person, that comes with a big smile. I have been training with Joe, I thing about a year now he is rock solid. Joe has a very easy way with teaching that comes across at once as both an expert and a patient communicator. This gym is unlike any experience I have had with martial arts. Very welcoming and inviting environment for kids and all levels of adults. No ultra aggressive behavior to be seen. Plenty of knowledgeable and professional instruction here. 10 day free trial speaks to their belief in their process at the gym and their faith in their instructors. Count my family in as we will be attending regularly.

My experience training at Berwyn Heights BJJ/ Gracie Jiu-Jitsu College Park has been awesome. One of the things that I enjoy the most is how welcoming and friendly the school, trainers and students are. I recommend all the ladies out there to try it out. Do not feel intimidating by the Jiu Jitsu, it is awesome for everybody.
Joe is a great instructor. Our 11 and 8 year old boys are loving Jiu Jitsu lessons and my wife is signing up for the Women's Empowerment Class. The rates are reasonable and include access to the Gracie University resources as well. It's a great value and a lot of fun.

It was an awesome experience. My daughters and I learned a lot of great techniques and my daughters went home to practice the moves. They worked. I'd been looking to start back up in Martial Arts after moving to the East Coast, so happy to have found Joe & Berwyn Heights BJJ. Top notch instruction and great camaraderie among the students, make a great training environment.
Been going here since the beginning of summer. I really like Joe's style of teaching and like that there was multiple hours and days to feet needs of different people. The first 10 days free trial definitely helped me make my decision to sign up as I knew what I was getting. I'd recommend you go try too before you sign up so you know how good this school is.
Been training at this CTC since July, the presentation of the information is easy to understand and easy to follow. The other students in the class create a welcoming non intimidating environment. Definitely hooked on the program.
The Gracie program is great but when it's paired to a top notch instructor like Joseph Lilly, you know you've stumbled on something amazing. The structure of the program, the relaxed and cooperative atmosphere, the quality of the instruction, coupled to Joe's relentlessly friendly and positive attitude and his attention to detail, have made for a remarkable learning experience from day 1 and I'm hooked! I know I will be training under Joe for many years to come. As such, I would recommend this to any one, regardless of age or experience; not that it would be a gamble since the first few sessions are free!!
We are now hooked on Brazilian Jiu-jitsu! I was looking for a martial arts program for my two young kids, and found Berwyn Heights BJJ. Now all three of us have been taking classes for over a year. We love the sport, and my kid's confidences have grown exponentially. And, Joe is an amazing instructor, always positive and makes class fun, no matter what age.
