ATA Nightmare - Barrett's ATA is one of the worst experiences of our lives. We were with them for two painful years. Some of the instructors like Roche, Gray, and Kelly are good, but there are other instructors there that should be avoided because they tend to have their favorites and ignore the rest of the students. Our main problem is with Senior Master Barrett. We had poor communication from the start, enigmatic standards, and flagrant favoritism. For example, she once told me son didn't shine, but couldn't tell me what that meant, but she had literally spend a total of 5 minutes with him over the course of two years. Testing clearly shows that they do a poor job preparing students, as they simply mirror the instructors moves. Total McDojo! Also, it becomes obvious that some instructors aren't in sync with the rest of the program. When it comes to testing some of the students know the moves, and others have no idea what is going on. It's painful to watch. They rely on the Spark ap, which is constantly down, and you have to check in at the front desk anyway to make sure they make the class requirements. We would go week after week, thinking we were checked in, only to find out the ap was not logging our classes. My daughter was nominated for best student of the cycle, but then they never hung up her award. We wound up buying a frame and hanging it up ourselves. There are lots of incidents of bullying that go unreported and shrugged off as tattling when you report it, or you know its just kids being kids, but then they have a bully prevention class that clearly admonishes the behavior. The final straw came when they accused my son of pushing another student, but the fact of the matter is he wasn't even there when the incident occurred. The incident was misreported,, but when I complained they needed to check their roster before accusing their students, magically they held back my son from testing...after an entire cycle. They tried dialing it back saying he didn't have a "black belt attitude," even though he was going for his green belt, but it was the first time we had heard of it. Again, you'd think if there was a problem, they would have said something. It's their loophole, for if they don't like you attitude, or stick up for yourself, they will punish you. That's not ATA lesson I am familiar with. I hope they read this and adopt a positive attitude of growth, because we honestly love Taekwondo and sadly they do not know how to create an environment of growth that caters to that.
