Best academy I’ve ever trained at in 21 years of jiu jitsu. Technical level, environment, vibe, facility (both Costa Mesa and Mission Viejo), schedule, adults program, kids program, gi, no gi, training with the best of the best, being taught by high level world champions all under the age of 30. All of this is a cut above the rest. There’s no comparison. If you want to train jiu jitsu and you live in Orange County this is where you have to go. I promise you won’t regret it. Just Google “Gui and Rafa Mendes”. Oh yeah and no money grab cancel policy because they are completely secure in what they are offering, unlike other places. A+++++++++

For those interested to know Your daily pass includes a full day Acess to all classes. 6-7am fundamentals 7-8am comp class 8-9am fundamentals 9-10 nogi 5-6 nogi 6-7 fundamentals Just note classes get super packed and don’t get shocked when people are rolling into you. It’s the norm.

Friday 18th we took the Fundamental Class, from the moment we stepped in everyone was very welcoming and super cool, Hiago (if I didn’t get the name wrong) is so welcoming and professional took the time to answer our questions and got us geared up for the class. Prof. Johnatha thought an amazing class and took the time to answer my questions. Finally I had the chance of meeting my Italian brother Alessandro, a true gentleman. Excellent experience for my first class. Everyone was welcoming and focused. You can tell the guests are here to train and develop their skills. The basics class had great instruction, with the profe breaking down the drills step by step, and changing angles so everyone can see. My son showed interest in martial arts, wrestling and sports of this nature. I was in town for the holidays and the RVCA store said I should check out this gym if I’m looking into a gym for my son. We went and my son is hooked. Their teachers are very patient and very skilled. The kids are disciplined and also focused. My son learned so much in the 3-4 classes he went to. We live pretty far but we are gonna make the drive every weekend for the remainder of the year just because the joy my son has by being there. The pricing is fair and honestly to see the smile my son has and seeing the confidence he exudes now, I’ll pay almost whatever to continue going here as long as he continues to learn.

I had the opportunity to spend a half day at Art of Jiujitsu. What a stunningly beautiful place to train. Everyone was super welcoming and I really enjoyed the high level instruction and. I am a Master 5 female and have trained at quite a few places and it was amazing how the default here is was high level, technical flow rolling. I got to work and roll with world level females which was an extra bonus for me. It was just wonderful and worth every penny spend. I even got to partner with Jessa Khan during nogi. Such an inspiration. Make sure to pack a white gi.

I almost never write reviews of any sort unless it’s something I feel is extremely exceptional. I’ve been here for a few months, and guarantee if you train seriously (focus 100% on instructors) you’r game will accelerate at a rate you wouldn’t have imagined. Literally all the instructors are brilliant and helpful if you just ask. I saw a complaint from someone regarding instructors attention being hard to get because of large class size. Perhaps its his experience, but while the class sizes are large I’ve personally never had any issue w/ getting an instructor to help weather before, during or after class. Cant say enough good things about AOJ personally, just highly recommend, exceptional, A+.

Went here for a month when I was down for business its the best of the best honestly and you will pay a premium for it. But if your looking for the best one the west coast this is it. The Mendes brothers are legendary in the BJJ community they take training very seriously so if you do to this is the place for you not much of a casual vibe though so maybe no the best place for you if your not serious.

I did a 1 on 1 private with Rafa. Due to scheduling conflicts he had to cancel our i final date but he ended up fitting me in on a Friday morning and i cannot thank him and the school enough for being so accommodating. He gave me the option of teaching me random techniques or the option of having 4 min rounds so he could critique my game (top & bottom) he taught me very minute details that have advanced my game tremendously in such a short time. Once i separate from the military i plan on training at his facility full time and receiving my black belt from him. His staff & facility and is world class to none. I highly recommend if you’re serious about Jiu Jitsu seeming him out.

Super facility, great instructors, helpful training partners. I attended a fundamentals class on a Friday morning and there were about 30 students in attendance of all ability levels. Surprising for a weekday morning. It was an excellent class followed by a fun sparring session. I am an airline pilot and often train at bjj gyms all over the country. AOJ is most definitely among the finest I've had the pleasure to train at.

I began training at Art of Jiu Jitsu in April of 2013, at the time I had just began to get serious about losing weight and getting healthy. While in the beginners classes Coach Ryan and Coach Gu pushed me into overdrive! Before receiving my first stripe and moving over to the fundamentals class I had dropped an incredible amount of weight and down from an A3 to an A2 sized gi. Besides the benefits of exercise and weight loss I also began to acquire something much more valuable, I began to acquire self confidence, self esteem, humility and compassion among many other attributes. Upon entering the fundamentals phase of my development, Professor Giu, Professor Rafa, and Coach Rick took me and my exercise and weight loss to the next level. Since I began training there I have lost a total of 80 pounds, with my total weight loss at 110 pounds. Last weekend I competed in my first tournament, and what is really special about this is when my friend Lou originally invited me to train at AOJ I was so nervous that I had a panic attack when I pulled into the parking lot. Not only were the reasons for my nervousness completely absurd but what I found inside of AOJ was the complete opposite of my fears. I found a family inside, a camaraderie, a joyous and friendly community of men and woman of all ages, all working together to become better people. There is far more to Jiu Jitsu than what I saw on the surface and I am forever grateful to my Professors, Coaches and the entire AOJ Family.

This studio is beyond excellent. My daughter enrolled Oct '12 when she was 4. She is quiet and still is afraid of fighting. The professors and especially the coaches, have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome, and help my girl learn courage, fitness, manners, and morals... more like an expert nanny or kindergarten teacher. The coaches are very strong yet so gentle and inspiring to the children. I've been in several studios; always a bit ratty. This one is spotless, constantly cleaned.

I have been to 8 different bjj gyms!! Yes 8! This place, AOJ, is quite a bit above the rest. Rafa and Gui will take the time and answer any question you have. Seriously...I ask incredible amounts of questions and they have answered them all. They always have time for you. They respect you as a paying customer and as a student of the art in which they guide you. The atmosphere is inviting yet intense. They will work you out mind and body. People ask me if I know any good bjj gyms around and I say move to costa mesa and train at AOJ. Most everything else is...almost comical.

Professors Gui and Rafa revolutionized Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. IMO, when you learn a physical skill, you need the BEST basic foundation. Otherwise when mistakes become a part of muscle memory, it takes more time to "unlearn" and change it. That being said, training with professor Gui and Rafa makes complete sense. Not only they teach EVERY class, they also walk around and correct each person. The instructions are clear as crystal, every minute detail demonstrated slowly, clearly, and until everyone understands. They don't keep any secrets! They answer every question that you have regardless the level of your jiu jitsu. I've been training for a month, and love every second of it! Main points: 1. Professors Gui and Rafa teach every class. 2. Instructions are precise and attention to detail is second to none. 3. They are never tired of any question. They even demonstrate techniques or answer questions after class. 4. The learning environment is great! No egos, bad attitudes or jerks. Everyone is friendly and helping each other out. No one is trying to hurt others. 5. Mats are clean and made of high quality. 6. Great ventilation Great cardio work out, while you learn something that might save your life one day, what are you waiting for?

As I walk up the steps through the doors into the academy I am washed over by this sense of what I can only describe as tranquility and crispness. Everything is a calming shade of white, and helps convey the sophistication in simplicity in the academy design. It reflects the accomplishment, talent, coaching ability and evolution of BJJ that Professors Guilherme and Rafael Mendes provide. There is an excellent structure to the classes, clear cut and detailed. What I enjoyed the most is the environment, created by the highly knowledgeable and charismatic siblings, not to mention the ego-less students that reflect the skill level and quality of coaching. These guys are good. Really really good. The best thing about it is that everyone is there to learn and develop, and it shows. Is there a heaven? Yes there is, it's called the Art of Jiu Jitsu academy on 411 East 17th Street, Costa Mesa, and I can't wait to go back there.

The coolest thing is that the bros teach every single class from kids classes to fundamentals to advanced. This place is beautiful! This BJJ dojo really has it all. Clean mats, good people, and world class instruction. Let me start with the dojo/gym first. They have two mat areas with quality mats for plenty of space to learn BJJ. The mats and walls are all clean white to create a nice atmosphere to train in. There are plenty of spots and lockers to place your equipment if needed. A men and women's restroom also contain multiple showers in them. This is the only gym that i've been to that has a cleaning service with it. Drop off your gi (the uniform of BJJ) after use and you'll have a clean gi next time you stop by. The facilities are awesome. They have two iMacs to browse the web if you're waiting for class, and some vending machines if you get thirsty. (coconut water and other healthy juices.) The gym is close to the beach also so the air quality is pretty good. The 1st day I trained here, they had 2 of the walls opened up to allow for a fresh ocean breeze to come in while training. The people I met here are all nice and genuinely (don't know if that is a word) friendly. The higher belts are all willing to teach techniques or go over something if asked. Rafa and Gui are always available to ask questions to also if needed. They always make themselves available and accessible for all their students. So far I have met people who have been training for years, many people just starting out, and some people who dabble in bjj from time to time. If you want to be a world champion or are interested in a good workout, this is the place to be. They don't merely just teach a few techniques and tell you to kill each other. They actually go through the fundamentals in detail and with structured teaching. Everyone i've met here are interested in learning properly and not trying to hurt one another. No big egos here basically.World class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction from multiple time champs Rafael and Guilherme Mendes. You don't get instruction from just one world class instructor, but two. They really know what they are talking about. They know their basics and fundamentals extremely well, but also have their additional take and style on jiu jitsu. Not only do they show the basic pure form of jiu jitsu, but they also show the newest cutting edge techniques from around the world. They keep up to date on the newest and most effective techniques. Rafa and Gui are a part of Team Atos. The fastest growing, and most elite group of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors in the world. They have champions and celebrities stopping by all the time to roll, hang out, or show some techniques. A few who have stopped by are Andre Galvao, Kid Peligro, Sky Blu (from LMFAO), Vitor Belfort, Comprido, and BJ Penn. I can't forget to mention on their excellent kids program. Rafa and Gui are investing time on teaching their world class jiu jitsu to the champions of tomorrow. I wish I had quality instructors like them when I first started martial arts a long time ago. Traditional martial arts like karate and tae kwon do are good, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu actually is truly effective in any situation outside on the street. I know because I have a 1st dan black belt in both karate and tae kwon do. It gives you a false confidence. I'm not knocking the other martial arts, but I wish my parents put me in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since I was young. Come stop by and check it out. Everyone here is real friendly. Do a search on google for the Mendes bros and check them out. Real good guys with extensive knowledge in BJJ. They also offer free trial classes for anyone interested in trying it out. I will try and highlight key points from parent and kids perspectives for parents out there who are looking for the best overall experience for their kids regarding jiujitsu. I am speaking from experience having 2 kids enrolled at AOJ (ages 9 and 6). Parent perspective - Instructors are amazing with kids of all ages. They are engaging, empathetic, compassionate, good listeners, excellent role models. - They are focused on the kids developing good habits in the gym as well as outside. - Each class ends with a life lesson and something the kids can apply outside the gym - Kids are training in a safe environment and they are having fun while learning. - Facilities are extremely clean with easy access to bathrooms, showers and lockers. - Kids are learning to be respectful and developing a strong work ethic - The Mendes Bros (Rafael and Guilherme) facilitate and train ALL the advanced children's classes as well as attend tournaments to coach when possible. They are constantly at the gym and are aware of how all the kids are performing and where they are in their development. Kids perspective - They look forward to training everyday and so far have not complained about having to go to class. - My son will go early to help his sisters class along with the other advanced kids. - It has helped with their self confidence and self-esteem. - They truly feel like they have become apart of an extended family. - Not to mention the Halloween pot luck party was a blast. Overall - I know there are many choices when it comes to training in martial arts in Orange County but in my opinion this is the Best choice we could have made for our kids.

Training at Art of Jiu Jitsu is an amazing experience. Not only is the building more like a museum than a training facility, the Mendes brothers have created a family dedicated to improving themselves and their fellow students, and the family grows larger every day. Rafael and Guilherme facilitate and train ALL adult classes as well as the advanced children's classes. The instruction is top notch and is broken down, detail by painstaking detail, to ensure that nothing goes unnoticed or overlooked. The kids classes, run by Ryan Osborn, have had a huge impact on my children's lives, so much so that my 7 year old son told me after 3 weeks of training "Dad, pull me out of soccer. I just want to do Jiu Jitsu and compete!" I am honored to be part of such a great family and highly recommend this facility to everyone.

Several students have relocated to Orange County from thousands of miles away (e.g. Hawaii, North Carolina, Japan) for the sole purpose of training at this academy. I think that says it all, but I’ll elaborate anyway. Instructors Gui and Rafael are welcoming to all comers and teach every class. They are patient and excellent with beginner & advanced students alike. They will offer you their personal attention and encouragement regardless of whether you're a high level competitor or a new student struggling with the basics. The curriculum is organized and well planned. There are separate men's and women's change rooms with individual showers. Cleanliness is clearly a priority-- the mats and restrooms are cleaned regularly. Lastly, there are plenty of class times to choose from for those of us with busy schedules. In fact, one of the reasons I joined was because of the later 7:30 p.m. classes, but I've found that the convenient lesson times are only a very small part of the many things I appreciate about AOJ. I've been training at the Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy for four months now and it has been a life changing experience. The Mendes Brothers are not only world class Jiu Jitsu champions but also excellent Professors. They bring an energy and positivity to the training that you cannot help but be caught up in. In just a short time I feel I have developed a Jiu JItsu Family and feel so fortunate that I've been introduced to the Jiu JItsu lifestyle. The kids program is excellent and the Academy promotes an environment where entire family's can com together to train and improve their lives. If you've been considering taking Jiu Jitsu but have been hesitating I highly recommend the Art of Jiu JItsu Academy!

The best decision I ever made ! would you take surfing lessons from Kelly Slater? well that is the same thing in the Jiu jitsu world . the Mendes Bros are world class and they teach every single class. It's pretty awesome how much weight i have lost in the process too (15 pounds in 2 months ) My wife loves the new body and my kids love the extra energy i have with them . I can not honestly say enough good things about the Mendes Bros ! OBRIGADO!!!!!!

Great academy! World class professors and helpful, friendly staff, excellent facilities. I was new to Jiu Jitsu and martial arts when I joined AOJ and I learned so much already. I definitely recommend AOJ to everyone!

This academy is far and away the best academy that I have ever been to. First of all, the space is beautiful, it honestly feels/looks like jiu jitsu heaven. It is always clean, there is an abundance of mat space, the locker room set-up is great, there is a nice lounging area to hang out in before or after class, there is a laundry service...I could go on and on and on, it truly is a wonderful place. But even though the academy is state of the art, what makes AOJ special is the people. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the instructors, Rafa and Gui, are amazing. Rafa and Gui are fantastic teachers; they are extremely technical, they explain moves with incredible detail, they are patient and very accessible, they are just all-around genuinely great guys. You just really feel like a part of the family at this place, it is a great environment for everyone, men, women, children, (the kid's program is amazing!), competitors, families, hobbyists. It honestly doesn't matter who you are or what your goal is because there truly is a place for everyone here. I urge you to come check it out, you won't regret it!

The Mendes brothers are not just world champions at BJJ, they are amazing people! They're technique is second to none and they're instruction is also world class. Not to mention the facility itself is probably one of the nicest Jiu Jitsu gyms in the world. From the clean white decor/mats, to the locker room, no detail has been left unexamined. In the few months I've been there, we've had visitors travel from Australia, Israel, Costa Rica and other countries make the long trip to Costa Mesa just to train at AOJ. This is an added bonus bringing top notch Jiu Jitsu practitioners from around the world to share their own techniques. It doesn't hurt that BJ Penn has also been in to share some of his world championship experience. Don't be intimidated if you are new to the sport. Their fundamental classes are amazing for those brand new to Jiu Jitsu. If you have kids that want to try out BJJ, this is the place for them. They focus on anti-bullying and self defense. And they make it fun for the kids at the same time as teaching them such important lessons about when to go for help and when to use their Jiu Jitsu. This studio is a very family friendly environment. From the moment you walk in you will be welcomed and know that you made the right choice in gyms. I can't say enough good things about AOJ, it's simply amazing!!!

This places is amazing! AOJ is by far the best gym I have ever been to. The kids program is second to none. The techniques taught there are the newest and most effective in the world. Academia diferenciada do ponto de vista estrutural,decoração e funcionalidade.porem do ponto de vista assistencial ao aluno deixa a desejar .nao tem como um Único instrutor orientar adequadamente uma turma De 50-60 alunos ainda mais se o próprio instrutor treina durante as aulas.preocupacao exagerada com a lucratividade , marketing e com os lutadores de campeonato.fiz minha primeira aula teste e o instrutor sequer dirigiu uma palavra a mim .do ponto de vista de disponibilidade de horários para treino ,,excelente!!treino de manhã à tarde e a noite.cuidado! não há estacionamento para carros o suficiente para todos os alunos e a taxa inicial é puxada 225 dólares.

I dropped In to pay a visit since I was in town I want to see world class jiu jitsu and the art as well. I just experienced the art of disrespect. No one acknowledges new comers . Not one word. I was there for 25 -30 mins watching them train. Nothing but blank faces.

Great athletes but disgustingly horrible business/salesmen. Ordered two mats from their website over a month ago. To this day, over a month later, did not receive the item or any follow up info. I emailed, called, and left voicemails and still no response. Front desk employee picked up the phone and said he'll tell his supervisor and wait for a callback in an hour or so. Its been a day later and still no response. Like I said, great athletes and I'm sure it's a good place to train, but staff are clearly completely clueless in terms of selling merchandise and business. UPDATE: When I finally received a call back, they just told me that they don't make them anymore and aren't partnered with dollarmur. What?? Then why is it still on their website and why is it still available to be charged and ordered? My card was charged and everything. Horrible management.

I am extremely saddened to leave this review. We left our previous gym after 3 years to AOJ, even though they were 3Xs the price we were paying previously. To say we are unhappy is an understatement . First jiu jitsu tournament we had, the owner said they are opening a new location and no coach won’t be attending the tournament. Even though they have 20+ coaches. We were understanding and let it go. Today, we show up to jiu jitsu world and no coach is here and my son fought all his fights without a coach and still earned this gym a silver medal. They charge more than any other gym, and charge 2-3Xs more for cheap white gis with no support for the kids. I do not recommend this gym.

Don’t bother dropping in. Won’t let you train without buying one of their gis. I travel for work so I visit lots of schools. This place is doing to jiu jitsu what all the McDojos did to karate in the 2000s

Not so friendly and professional place for kids. My son wanted to attend this establishment because of his friends, but when my husband and son when to paid for the uniform they were told no. The employee refuse to sell to them, while continuing to ask them about my son friends. Can you imagine your son being so excited to start a new adventure with his friends, only to be told no by the employee about getting his uniform. I call the next morning to speak to a manger to explain the unpleasant situation. Spoke with a gentleman who stated that he deals with customer service only for him not to solve or make any suggestions on how my son was treated on the night before. Also he just keep preceding that there wasn’t a manger to speak too….He just keep suggesting to come back on Saturday to get a uniform, but why would I want to spend my money on establishment like this?

Do not buy the online service. Amazing content WHEN/ if it works. But I’m constantly locked out. I ended up paying for it twice. My computer saves my passwords but it will keep telling you the info you enter is wrong! To much headache.

First let me start off by saying that the academy is really nice and instruction is phenomenal. The only down sides are there is no freaking parking anywhere, you actually have to park like 5-10 min away from academy. It looks like they have their own little gang going on, weird atmosphere, people wont even look at you, they give you a weird look like " what the hell are you doing here?" Not that I wanted to feel special but I was excited to train with the best The Mendes Bros and I never was even acknoledge like I was invisible. Just weird armosphere adm weird looks.
