Being brand new to martial arts,I was very hesitant, among other things, to learn Silat. Kevin is a very knowledgeable instructor who is deeply passionate about what he does. He communicates effectively and is patient, which I really appreciate due to my lack of experience. Everyone has been welcoming and helpful in class as well.
Posted 9 years agoI have been studying various martial arts on and off since 1989. I've had the fortune to study under a lot of great teachers and Kevin is certainly among the elite tier. Silat, by its very nature, is a secretive art. To study under an instructor in a Silat system that can trace its lineage to at least 5 separate Silat traditions is a rare opportunity indeed. Silat provides the ability to defend yourself regardless of age, illness, or past injuries. Can't do a spinning jump side kick to the head? I can't, not anymore. Silat has a breadth and depth of techniques to address and overcome a lot of physical shortcomings. A truly mixed martial art, to be used to protect your loved ones.
Posted 10 years agoI have studied the Art of Pentjak Silat under Guru Pelatih Kevin Schmitt since February of 2011. Throughout my martial arts training career I haven't met anyone who combined the incredible amount of knowledge, ability to teach another and simply to be a great person at the same time. Guru Kevin Schmitt is equally good while teaching adults, teens or younger children. He is passionate about the martial arts in general and most importantly about preserving the Art of Pentjak Silat, specifically in the form that is taught by our Oom Guru Besar Jim Ingram - Amerindo Self Defense. Guru Kevin Schmitt's dedication to his students, to his teacher and to the art of Silat earned him a great deal of respect and recognition in the Martial Arts community long time ago. Sometimes I wished I was a little younger to start over with Kevin, as I was looking for a great martial arts teacher my entire life and I am 52 years old. Thank you Guru Pelatih Kevin Schmitt for sharing your knowledge of Silat with us and for your dedication to the Art of Amerindo Pentjak Silat Hormat - means respect! Serge D.
Posted 10 years agoHands down the best hand to hand, self defense instruction I've ever had. Being a bouncer requires me to physically and tactfully deal with undesirables, and using these techniques quickly gets the job done. Practical self defense for the real world. You won't regret it!
Posted 10 years agoBeen here for about a year, and its honestly been a great help! Its the real thing
Posted 10 years agoTerrific school. Very practical. Learning and practicing useful applications in every class.
Posted 10 years agoNext to worthless. Teacher knows Silat but cannot teach effectively. You will never even break a sweat. Moves are given too fast and after 3 or so repetitions move on to another move. In 3 months hardly any moves were repeated making it almost impossible to remember anything, much less be effective in any real fight. His students will be wiped out in any street fight almost certainly. It is a shame as the style is very good. Wasted my time and money.
