My 7 year old son has been attending AKF for almost 3 years. We enjoy our time there. He has learned a lot and it has helped with many other aspects of his life. Our prekyuki-do teacher was amazing and we are now enjoying basic class and working on moving up in his martial arts journey! Recommend
My daughter currently attends the 3 & 4 year old classes on Wednesday nights. Joining AKF was probably the best thing I have done, not only for my daughters safety BUT she also has improved in schooling. She focuses more, better team player, and she is filled with so much kindness and confidence!. I recommend 100%.
My kiddo has been a part of AKF for almost 2 years now and he loves it! When he started I shared with the instructors that my kiddo has ADHD which can make it difficult for him to focus at times. When I asked if that would be a problem, they assured me right away that it was no problem at all and said that AKF would be good for him. They were right, over the next couple of months, I saw my child grow right before my eyes. He was not only learning martial arts, he was learning how to be a leader and have more confidence in himself. He started making friends and stepping out of his comfort zone to try new things. I am glad he is striving to be a black belt, but what I am most proud of is he is also striving to be the best version of himself that he can be. Yes, it can get a little expensive but when I look at the man he is becoming, I know it is completely worth it.
Great place for kiddos and adults to learn a specific style of Martial Arts, get in some exercise, and inspire growth! Chester and all the coaches are great with all age groups. Check them out, and let your journey begin.
Chester and his staff are very professional and great role models for your kids. They offer classes for all ages. Great family run business that is connected with the local community. The facility is great!
My son has been a member for over a year now and he loves it! He started in the 4 year old class and has since moved to the 5-6 year old class.
I went with kids to one session. I was very impressed by the way every kid was treated with respect and encouraged to participate in healthy activity. This is indeed a family. They teach kids very good skills as part of their training. Well done!
AKF Martial Arts of Eau Claire is a class act!
The instructors at AKF are truly first class! They are passionate about their practice and teaching the students! Our daughter has grown exponentially in leadership, discipline, and self confidence. Grateful to be a part of the kyuki-do family!
As a person with a disability (amputation of a leg), I can only say the instructors go out of their way to help and modify any techniques to allow myself to achieve my goals. The instructors are amazing and patient as well as very knowledgeable. Both my daughter and myself have found a wonderful home here at AKF.
My son has been training with AKF Martial Arts Academy of Eau Claire for the past 2.5 years and it continues to be a life altering experience for him. The family-style focus of the classes allows for a naturally supportive and inclusive environment while providing my son role models to look up to as well as opportunities for him to mentor newer students. Master Gustavson utilizes a three-fold approach to rank advancement that measures effort & behavior at home, school and the academy. My son understands that his success is not solely measured by his efforts on the mat but instead it’s measured by his actions in all facets of his life. Master Gustavson and the staff are teaching the students how to be exceptional humans and active members of society. That's a priceless lesson! I’d recommend AKF Martial Arts of Eau Claire to anyone. Give it a try - you won’t be disappointed!
Not only teaches martial arts, but this group of people works hard to make our community better by volunteering in the community , teaching basic self defense, and strengthening leaders. Highly recommend
I enrolled my (then) 4 year old son after meeting Mr. Gustavson at the Kids Expo at the Sports Center this past Winter. In the 6 months he has attended, my son has learned so much more than just kicking and punching (which he loves) but he also is learning patience, respect, teamwork and even using the breathing techniques he learned when he gets upset. His attitude is changing for the better and I am grateful to the wonderful instructors Mr. Gustavson and Ms. Lee for being great role models for him also.
I've been so impressed by the way Chester really cares about his students: not only their increasing skill as athletes, but also making sure they grow into mature, responsible leaders. I appreciate the fact that he allows students to spar in tournaments but doesn't require it. My boys were always reluctant to "hurt someone." They would have benefitted from his approach. I'm just sorry Chester wasn't around during my days as a karate mom.
My family has been attending this Academy for over 3 years, we have grown alot together. Watching each other struggle and succeed in learning martial arts have been eye opening for all of us. We each have our own ways to deal with difficulties, and that includes other students. I have come to love many of the other students as family. I care about many of them, I am proud of them also when they conquer challenges and fears. This place have given me more than an understanding of martial arts, it has shown me more of what kind of person I can choose to be. What kind of people my kids will be. I love the Instructors both Mrs. Lee and Mr. Gustavson, they care about our personal goals as well as helping us to obtain our belt levels. Many of my favorite family memories are in this school, I am glad I signed up with my children. I love to see how proud I make them as much as I am of them.
So far my Son is loving the classes, I have some concerns with how they are running the business. I never received any contract even after asking, the equipment is on back order and a couple more problems I’d rather not explain. I am hopeful and open minded as we are new but also am keeping an eye on everything now. Edit; expect to be an expensive hobby. (equipment and package pricing) but my son is overall doing great with things we struggled with before. Cannot say it was ALL the class but the discipline does help.
Our experience with AKF was not one we would repeat. Our son was initially very excited to participate but quickly lost interest as he lacked the focus needed for many of the exercises. This was an issue we discussed at the initial consult and we were assured they worked with children with similar issues all the time and it wouldn't be a problem. Well, it became a problem so when we asked for private lessons to help build his confidence and strengthen his skills, the instructor dropped the ball and never set anything up with us despite an email stating she would be happy to do so. Other issues I found concerning were: (1) We were never given a copy of the contracts we signed with all the fine print, (2) The use of Korean terms would have been fine if they had given parents a handout for us to reference when practicing at home, and (3) Slow email responses on important items, compounded by short hours at the academy. For $117 a month, we expected more.
Sadly, I'm now moving. But I work with kids and women of domestic violence training in the martial arts. I met A few coming from heading train at this facility. The things I saw and was told by them. We're very underwhelming their forms were sloppy. The things they were told and taught. We're not things a value. Martial arts shouldn't be strictly about fighting and that kind of thing. What about building confidence pride? Resilience self-respect respect for others. Teaching Ethics and morals.... The one lady had been going there for a while. Some of the things she showed me. She had been taught were terrible in a real fight. Trying to protect herself, she would have done more harm than good. I'm not impressed... I Myself understand kyuki do, I've trained in Hapkido, Jiu Jitsu, Taekwondo and Judo respectively... the blending of each is great, but only if done well. Each has its own use, but it's important to know how and when to use each. Hapkido for instance...joint locks, grappling, throwing..blends well to the throwing techniques and ground work of Judo and jiu jitsu... but each differs in its usefulness in a given situation.. and the transition of standard upright defense and ground work needs to be a focus. They can train you all they want, but first..train your mind. Without a clear and focused mind your training becomes useless
With the amount of money that was paid for the class and the gear, we still have not received anything but a shirt, pants and white belt. After asking about the gear that was paid for we were told it was on “back order” but are now out “half off” the gear that you have to purchase to begin the class. No reimbursement for the gear that was paid for in full a week earlier. There is also no space for anyone to sit down if they wanted to watch their son, grandson, or family member. Very frustrating when you have to sit out in your vehicle and wait for a child when you want to be in there watching and observing what was paid for.
