As Christian parents we strive to make sure our son is an a wholesome environment, and we can honestly say that about Academy. Our son was apprehensive about attending. He was worried he wouldn’t feel comfortable. During his first week of attending he came back home talking about how professors Hector and Mateo took the time to instruct him and he enjoyed the respect the students showed one another. He learned skills that lifted his self esteem and he continues to share with us every new move he learns. We are forever grateful to Academy and its wonderful professors!!
The Academy and all of their professors, coaches and staff are awesome! Aside from the physical strength training, kids learn a foundation for commitment and discipline. Their location is convenient near stores and coffee shops for parents while kids train.
My son has been going to the Academy for 5 years and he loves it! It's always been clean and well kept. The coaches do an amazing job with coaching my son and other kids, especially when they are new, and make it fun for them to learn and want to keep coming back. The always stay vigilant with them when they spar to make sure they are applying their techniques and making sure they stay safe. They always accompany the kids when they go participate at the tournaments so they never feel alone. Overall it's an amazing facility and the staff is fantastic!
My 3 kids attend Academy and have been for the past 4 years(respectively). The boost in confidence has been amazing, and their physical health has greatly improvement.
The coaches are amazing, they really have a passion for working with kids and the love for the art of Jiu-jitsu and the hard work it takes is so apparent my kids have also shown that passion in wanting to learn.
This is a great investment in my kids, they are benefitting now and I know it will be even better in the future.
My daughter started here about 3 months ago, and we absolutely love it. The staff are all great. They are strict with the students but also very caring and compassionate. They run a tight ship but also know how to have fun.
The staff has a perfect balance.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to put their kids in jiu jitsu.
Academy Jiu-Jitsu/Kickboxing is the perfect place for people of all ages and skill levels. The professors are not only knowledgeable but also make learning enjoyable. With multiple class options and locations, it's super convenient. Safety is a top priority, creating a worry-free environment to train. And the camaraderie among the members is unparalleled - it's like being part of a big, supportive family. I wouldn't train anywhere else!
I can't say enough good things about Academy Jiu-Jitsu/Kickboxing! It's a truly family-friendly place where both kids and adults can learn and grow together. The professors are not only skilled but also incredibly patient and encouraging. The multiple classes and locations make it easy to find a schedule that fits, and the safe environment they provide is top-notch. Plus, the sense of community here is amazing. Highly recommend!
My son has been coming here for almost 2 years. I was nervous about where to start my son being that he was very timid and really not into any aggressive sports or Marital arts. I’m glad I chose Academy because the beginner kids class is GREAT to introduce jiu jitsu for kids and teach them the fundamentals. Not too long after he made it to the advanced class and now he’s competing winning medals more and confident than ever. Coaches are all great. No complaints.
I would highly recommend this place if your starting your children or yourself off in Jiu-Jitsu. The Program, Professors, and the Facility are very top notch. I love how the Professors demonstrate pure professionalism and patience to both the children and adults. The environment is very positive, motivating, inspiring, friendly, and uplifting. The staff members are very professional and excellent as well. This is the place if you want to get started in Jiu-Jitsu.
Talk about a running a well oiled machine! From the many coaches and assistants who still compete MMA level 🏆 🏅 to the knowledgeable and always helpful front desk personnel, this academy puts the others to shame 💪🥋
I'm a US Marine Veteran and I am proud to have signed up my son here. Instilling discipline, accountability, and focus most importantly. Don't settle for less it is guaranteed worth your student's time.
I’ve been training since December last year. I never really did jiu jitsu before but always watched mixed martial arts like UFC and prize fight boxing. I’ve been coming one a week and I love the program. I train no-Gi and Gi in the same day. Day 1 they let you start sparing which I really liked. They also offer beginner classes at the downtown location if your interested. Come on in and give a trial class a try! Worse case you tried it and don’t like it.
Only downside to this school is having to leave. Instructors are very patient with beginners while still helping the students who don’t need as much attention.
Academy is the best! Awesome coaches that truly care about you and your progress. There is also a very welcoming atmosphere with great training partners who will help you get better every day.
Outstanding program, they have some thing for everyone. Jam packed schedule with morning, afternoon, and night classes for both Jiujitsu and striking. Facility is new, and I love the kids area where kids can play arcade games or with toys while adults can train. Feels like a unified team and a second home more than it does a jujitsu academy, definitely recommend for hobbyists, competitors, and families alike. Great family atmosphere but also you will get in shape and grow as a person coming here.
I’ve been training for a little more than a year. I joined with two of my best friends and we’ve made it a weekly excuse to go to practice as a reason to hangout with each other due to our busy schedules. Although it started off as an excuse I soon realized how lucky I was to find such a unique community.The front staff is extremely welcoming and encouraging of your journey! I predominantly train with Professor Hector Beltran and he teaches in a very clear manner. He along with the other Professors try their best to answer all the questions throughout the training period, but like anything else the best lesson learned is through trial and error. The adult class can look intimidating with so many different people in one room especially when you first start. However, everyone is there to help you grow. Although there is no way around feeling helpless the first couple of sessions due to inexperience, there also isn’t anyone who is trying to hurt you. There is high level of respect, trust, and companionship that is built over the time that you attend. So, if you need a sign to join…this is it!

The amount of detail, structure and energy Each professor from (Black belt to blue belt) brings to each class is impressive my daughters have been here for a few months now and their game has evolved, not only because of their coaching and mentorship but because of each student that receives the same level of attention, You are only as good as your hardest roll. We love our Academy Family!
My kids have been in Jiu-Jitsu off and on for 6 years now. The progress I have seen in the 3 months we have been here is amazing. The classes are challenging yet safe. My child's confidence has increased exponentially (to a fault) because of how secure he feels in learning the material here.
The staff is fantastic. They're friendly, helpful, professional individuals and I am excited for my kids to grow in this academy.

I’ve had my daughter enrolled in Academy for almost 3 years now and the staff is amazing! All the professors and coaches are very patient and encouraging, they bring out the best in these kids. I can’t even begin to explain how it feels to see how far along my daughters jiu jitsu skills have improved and the look of excitement on her little face when she’s at academy. Academy really does feel like a second family and I cannot imagine us going anywhere else.
ACADEMY…. The name should be changed to family (Dominic Toretto’s voice) because that is what this has become to me. I was very intimidated with bjj but excited to embark on this journey. I researched of few schools before making my decision to join Academy and I am happy to say it has been one of the best decision I have made for my personal growth. Everyone at this school is so encouraging and so friendly that it’s hard not to feel at home. It is a very difficult journey and I have taken some time off here and there but always feel so welcomed when I step foot inside. Professor mateo is amazing and very technical and I have learned a lot from him as well. Eduardo always has a smile on his face and helped me out alot my first few days with the technique. Professor Euler’s kickboxing is so exhausting but so much fun and talks we have are always a pleasure. Professor Hector…. That guy’s mustache is ridiculous….ly perfect! Hector has made this journey for me so much more than learning a sport….. It’s a way of life. Whether you are on the mats or at home etc. It’s taught me how to lose, how to have patience, and how to appreciate triumph. So from the bottom of my heart thank you all for all the hours and hard work you put in for us. If your thinking about learning martial arts don’t think just come to a free class at academy. Tell ‘em el tigre sent you.
My boys have been at Academy since the age of 5 and now have been training for over 2.5 years. The first thing that grabbed our attention was how patient the staff was with a bunch of 5 and 6 year olds. They took their time to teach each kid the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu. The staff made training fun and at our amazement, our kids would pay attention for the entire hour, a feat that is not easily done. :) The training has paid off in all aspects. The first week of their 2nd grade in school session, we were told by staff how well behaved and disciplined our kids were. I wish I could take all the credit, but this shows they are learning more than just jiu-jitsu. They are a professional staff who truly care about their students. There is not doubt in our mind that we have made the best choice of joining Academy.
We have made great friends during our time here and consider them and staff our second family. I could go on and on. Best 2.5 years and counting!!
I have had the pleasure of training at Academy the last two years. Jiu Jitsu can be an intimidating sport where egos inflate, causing students to leave before ever really giving it a chance. I’m happy to write that you will not find any of that at this gym. My experience has been one of warm welcome; where students and faculty are held to a standard of respect and lifting one another up. Professors Hector, Mateo, and Coach Eduardo are dedicated to their students’ learning and safety. I also can’t emphasize how clean this gym is. The staff is always ensuring that the mats and equipment are clean and held to a high standard.
Academy Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing has amazing instructors who care about you and your goals. Providing a safe but fun place to train you can learn new skills at any age or shape. At Academy we make sure to help each other get better.The facility is brand new, huge, and beautiful !!
I’ve attended other Brazilian jiujitsu schools in Downey, and the team at Academy is superior to the others. I’ve learned so much more, the instructors are great group of experts that teach the fundamentals, are patient, and have helped me grow as a BJJ student. I still have a long road, and I am happy to be a part of this family.
My time with Academy has been absolutely incredible. When I first joined it was definitely nerve wrecking, knowing absolutely nothing about grappling; but the the instructors and classmates were so inviting and helpful. The professors and coaches are extremely knowledgeable and willing to guide you through technique or offer helpful advice during a live sparring session. Speaking of sparring, I've had some incredible experiances from flow rolling with a fellow white belt to using every trick I have against a higher belt it's always a great learning experience. Plus if jiujitsu isn't an interest of yours they offer an excellent kickboxing program, whether you're experienced or not this class is a perfect fit for everyone. So if you're curious about Jiujitsu or kickboxing I highly recommend checking Academy out.
I got my start with BJJ at this school and cannot say enough good things about it. The staff are professional and skilled and the students are welcoming and friendly. It's got a family atmosphere but is still very focused on training. They train hard there and genuinely love and enjoy teaching the sport.
Best gym in Downey! Both my daughter and I take Jiu Jitsu classes at Academy. Everyone is very helpful and professional. You truly feel like they are invested in your health and success. You just get a very comfortable feeling as soon as you walk through the door. Professor Hector, Professor Gustavo, and Coach Eduardo are all top notch and best in class. I would highly recommend Academy for anyone interested in learning Jiu Jitsu.
My sons have the privilege of training at Academy. This gym is a gem and we are lucky to have it in the City of Downey. Professor Gustavo and Hector along with coach Eduardo are outstanding instructors and human beings. This gym is more than a business to them. My sons are not only learning bjj skills, but are learning life long skills of work ethic, respect and camaraderie. This is a clean, and welcoming gym for students and their families. My sons play a variety of sports but I plan on continuing to bring my sons to Academy for many years to come.
As a business owner and experienced bjj practitioner with 10 years of training under my belt, I know what qualities to look for in a business and bjj academy. The following reasons are why I recommend Academy BJJ:
1. When you step into Academy BJJ, you are greeted with a warm welcome.
2. The instruction from Professor Gustavo and Professor Hector is world class. Every time I visit, I learn something new. You will not find Professors like Gustavo at most bjj academies. The man is on another level.
3. Their kids program is the best one is the area. I say this from personal experience. I shopped around other local bjj schools and was quickly disappointed.
4. Their location is kept clean and organized. Additionally, every Saturday there’s a farmers market right in front, so that’s pretty cool too. The location is in the heart of Downey.
5. Although they are a very competitive school, the members are not trying to rip your head off or smash you every training session. This is especially important for those individuals who are looking to learn a new skill but don’t care to compete.
In short, Academy BJJ is hands down the best bjj academy in the local area because of their welcoming customer service and world class instruction. Give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Come try some ninja moves with us, to arm bars, triangle chokes, rear naked chokes and just in general for self defense.
This place is garbage they tried to make my brother bow down to a Mat,an object,we only bow to Jesus Christ. I drove an hour to get here and they waited till the end to tell me he had to bow to a mat and that he couldn't bow to Jesus Christ. waste of time.
I had my son going there for a year and they teach same stands over and over again. They also mix beginners with advanced students and they always have the advanced students teach the beginners
These people told me one thing on the phone last night.then when I take my 6 yr old son they tell me he is not qualified..smh.. how.??!!ITS HIS FIRST DAY!!!..PLACE IS FULL OF IT.... TO COCKY!!!!th
