First time joining a class and I loved it! I had zero Tai Chi experience and Will was patient and went over things so people could learn and keep pace. The entire experience was very releasing. My body holds tension and I found this class easy to help myself release said tension.
As we get older our balance starts to get awry. It was awesome to learn many of the basic moves and how it will help the mind and body. Will knows his stuff and is very personable. I definitely recommend his Tai Chi class
My kids and I are here respectively 5 nights per week now. As an older mom with a sedentary lifestyle I already see improvement in my stamina and perspective on life and I am so grateful for Instructor Will’s gentle teaching style. The adult class is a wonderfully accepting place to learn!!!
33 years ago I survived death twice. I'm cognitively disabled and partially blind. In shock hardly able to function or care for myself. After 2yrs of sitting in a dark room I realized I had to save myself. I joined a euchi-ryu dojo. Became a dojo rat for 5 yrs... earned my 1st. Degree blackbelt then a 2nd and was prepared to test for the third. Then I blew out my knee, got it replaced. Blew out my back, got it fused. Then i shoulder surgery. Karate was out so I studied tia chi Chang for five yrs. Then on to aikido and another blackbelt. More surgeries no martial arts for 5 years. Then I found will at 8 martial arts. I was struggling mentally and physically. My ptsd raged, I was in trouble. I had to get back to what saved my life and will is doing that for me with bagua chi, tia chi, meditation and inner peace. Check it out it can save your life mentally physically and spiritually.
I think the Oriental perspective on mind body wellness has helped me both physically and mentally. The western emphasis on health tends to be largely physical. Treating your body like a machine and ignoring the yin yang of the mind -body connection that is crucial for real well being . So, while Oom Yung Doe has improved my physical body; I definitely have gained spiritual health at the same time.
I went for the free tai-chi lesson in April 2022. That was 18 months ago. I now have skills in 8 martial arts. What you will find here is a complete system, that at its heart, encourages the marriage of mind and body to reach a level of mastery that will provide you with a lifetime of health and wellness. These are practices that are not readily available around here, so to have this close by is very appreciated, and I travel an hour 3 times a week to learn. Our instructor Will, a 4th degree black belt, is as passionate and dedicated a teacher as you could hope to find. What is most appealing is that the school takes people of all ages and abilities. What is clear is that you are able to benefit from these teachings whatever you think your physical or mental ability currently is. This is a highly recommended undertaking that will serve you for years to come.
Have been going to 8 Martial Arts for almost a year! Absolutely love coming! Lost the extra 10 lbs and love the classes - people that come are of all ages ! So everyone would feel welcome! It's great for mind and body- Can't recommend it enough- a truly way to improve your life and health ❤️
I cannot recommend 8 Martial Arts highly enough. I joined the studio as a complete novice to martial arts and was encouraged by Instructor Will and my classmates to dive in. I found the experience to be deeply rewarding and beneficial to my overall health and well being (in no time at all). The practice helped de-clutter my mind and build strength and flexibility in my body. Instructor Will is extremely knowledgeable of how the body is engineered and has deep expertise of the traditions, history and lore of the practice. He is dedicated to sharing this passion with students of all levels and backgrounds and takes the time to work with all his students, regardless of their ability level. He is among the most caring, communicative instructors I have yet to practice with, often reaching out just to check in when you might miss a few classes in a row.
The 8 Martial Arts facility itself is top-notch with plenty of space, bags, and equipment. Everything is kept very clean and orderly. What really sets 8 Martial Arts apart is the community. All the students are supportive of one another and it feels like a familial environment. There's no ego or competitiveness in the class, just a shared love for learning about the history and ceremony of the practice.
Whether you're a beginner looking to get in shape and learn self-defense, or a seasoned martial artist deepening your training, 8 Martial Arts is the perfect place for any and all. I looked forward to every class and continued to improve under the guidance of Instructor Will. The only reason I'm stopping is because we are moving away.
This school has my highest recommendation - a must visit if you're ever curious about martial arts in the area!
I just want to say a special thank you to Instructor Will. Instructor Will asked me what my biggest take away from the 6 week challenge has been. Even more than the 35 pounds I have lost, it has to be HOPE.
I feel so much better than I did 6 weeks ago, and I am resolved to do another six. And then hopefully another 6 and keep going.
With all the money that I am no longer spending on junk food and alcohol, the class pays for itself.
Thank You.
The 6-week challenge program had inspired me at a time where I was looking for results from my exercise regimen, but I gained much more. I became mindful about the food I consumed and learned what foods actually feel good to eat. It encouraged me to meal plan and prep. I found discipline through being accountable for being present for classes. Learning in classes was beginner friendly. I enjoyed the experience being introduced to different forms of martial arts. It was very engaging and became a lifestyle shift that really shaped my internal strength as much as my physical strength.
I have been a student for about 8 weeks now and I love every class! I enjoy learning multiple martial arts and becoming more confident in my abilities to defend myself and challenge my body and mind! It's fun to learn different practices. I feel the benefits both mentally and physically and leave class each time feeling better than when I walked in. Instructor Will is an excellent teacher and provides an awesome experience each class! It's a wonderful experience and a positive atmosphere!
Instructor Will has a real gift for bring all levels of students along fully engaged in their martial arts practice despite varying skill levels. A truly gifted man sharing his love for the art in an incredible way. This has allowed me to develop my beginner skills faster than I would have thought possible.
8 martial arts has taught me the skills to overcome challenges, increase strength and grow my confidence. I have found a sense of community here and can't wait to see my growth over time!
My sons have been coming for the past year and experienced a great family environment. Not only is Master Will a phenomenal instructor with the kids but also teaches self-defense and provides a great workout. The kids learn life lessons such as: discipline, self-confidence, and respect for others. I highly recommend 8 Martial Arts for anyone interested in learning all the different arts they offer.
My girls love this class and have learned and improved so much in just a few months. Instructor Will is so patient and great with kids. Definitely a great class.
I’m so glad I signed up for the school! It’s a great way to be active without the stress or pressure of being in a gym. Everyone shows up to class with the simple intention of trying their best. Instructor Will is very helpful, encouraging, and supportive of all his students. Since joining 9 weeks ago, I’ve noticed an overall improvement in my mental and physical health. I leave each class feeling refreshed, energized, and clear headed!
Instructor Will is an awesome instructor to have! I have been in his class for about 8 weeks now and I have learned so much about martial arts. I enjoy every second of class knowing I am there to better my self and push my self out of my comfort zone. I feel safe and respected during every class.
Instructor Will teaches the class in great detail and makes sure you understand what your doing. I 100% recommend getting outside of your comfort zone and practice martial arts here!!!
I joined 8 Martial Arts Plymouth in search of both physical and mental health improvements. The classes have exceeded my expectations on both, namely due to the leadership of instructor Will Hanna. You get the post-workout burn as if you hit free weights hard for an hour, yet it all comes form internal focus and movement. Like Yoga meets Calisthenic Training. I'm not especially fond of exercise and yet almost crave these workouts, feels like an "awakening" of muscles and joints. I truly can't recommend it enough, whether your goal is weight loss, muscle gain, mental health or martial arts as a sport I urge you to at least try 8 Martial Arts Plymouth.

Student since July 2022
My husband and I were very excited to see something like 8 Martial Arts come to our area. We jumped at the opportunity and enrolled our son. We have seen a tremendous improvement in our sons focus and confidence. Will Hanna is a fantastic instructor who connects with his students, teaching them new skills they can apply in their lives. Will brings structure and discipline while having fun. There are classes for all ages. The best decision we made!
Instructor Will is a excellent teacher, mentor and person. He breaks down the movements so that I can process them at my own level. I have gained confidence, flexibility and focus since joining.
The youth class is GREAT! Combined fun and focus keeps my son engaged and eager to learn and follow instructions. Instructor Will interacts and instructs on a level my son understands. Excited to see my son's body and mind develop through martial arts.
I am 52 years old
and became a student here three months ago. I would like to take this opportunity to express how beneficial this experience has been for me. I’ve been introduced to multiple martial art forms( super fun!) I feel more confident about physically defending myself. My flexibility and muscle tone have noticeably improved. The breathing/meditation and energy exercises are a lasting respite from the chaos of today. Best of all, Instructor Will is an incredible teacher, encouraging and challenging to everyone in the very diverse group of students (all ages, body types and fitness levels).
What we all do have in common is a desire to better ourselves physically and mentally. I just love this bunch! Thanks for all you do instructor Will! I look forward to each class!
A wonderful studio with an awesome environment made it so easy for a newcomer like myself to start and stay! Working instructor Wills regiment into my life has been so great for my overall health and the other students in class help bring such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere!
This has been an amazing journey for me. I participated in the 6 week challenge and not only did I loose weight but I gained more flexibility, strength and agility. I have energy and was never deprived or felt like I was starving! Learning is knowledge, power and freedom to feel great!
This class has worked wonders for me since I’ve joined. I am feeling much more flexible stronger and I definitely do not have the lower back pain problem as before! I highly recommend this class for all ages shapes and sizes working on breathing , stretching, meditation and endurance at your pace!!!
A positive atmosphere for learning. Instructor Will Hanna is very welcoming and pleasant to all that enter his establishment. My daughter is seeing her own improvements as well as I see them. I like being able to watch the class so that I can help my daughter in practicing her Martial Arts at home. I firmly believe the classes are building confidence in my daughter and pride in her efforts. Responsibility and respect are a benefit from this program as well. I am thankful for this business moving to our area to offer the learning opportunities to locals. The business is close enough to home and prices are quite reasonable. I would recommend these classes to anyone interested in learning about Martial Arts for themselves or their children/grandchildren.
Classes are challenging, fun, and rewarding making one not to want to miss a class. Instructor Will is excellent and embodies the practice. Without a doubt he enjoys teaching others and is supportive and accommodating to various abilities and needs while encouraging students to challenge themselves. Overall a very supportive atmosphere. These disciplines are a complete package synchronizing body and mind. Couldn’t recommend this practice enough!

8 martial arts united
My son Xzavier age 7 has been working with Will for a month now. He is learning so much including following instructions and respect for others an marital arts. He loves the class he doesn’t ever want to leave. I personally am great full that he has found something to focus his energy on something he enjoys. Will is great with the kids and I hope my son continue to enjoy his class.I enjoy watching him grow and learn the techniques of martial arts.
Very supportive and positive environment for both my son and daughter. It is both challenging and fun for them to learn various martial arts styles. It has given them both confidence to gain discipline and strength.
I had wanted to try martial arts for many years but only recently took the plunge, googling my way to a highly rated school nearby, Oom Yung Doe in West Cambridge. OYD, developed over centuries, integrates 8 martial arts. It’s designed to help each student gain broad exposure but also eventually specialize in a way that’s tailored to an individual’s needs and body. Think of OYD as cross training. “Balance” is a word you hear often. Mind vs. body. Hard strikes vs. soft fluid movements. Upper vs. lower body. Improving joint and tendon as well as muscle strength.
While each lesson tends to focus on a single martial art, it usually has the same progression: deep breathing, warmup/conditioning, movement, and self-defense, the latter two interrelated. At the end of each class, the instructor gives the technique du jour more context with a brief anecdote or history lesson. Head Instructor Will and Assistant Head Instructor Danielle are awesome. Even in the context of group classes, there’s a lot of individual instruction and tailoring of activities to students at different levels of development. To help you along, they regularly invite regional and national experts to observe classes and offer advice.
OYD in West Cambridge is challenging but surprisingly low-key. Will and Danielle are like most good teachers: they challenge you but are also quite encouraging. Students, men and women, range in age and are quite supportive and collaborative. More advanced students guide beginners. There are both youth and adult programs. At first, I wondered if the atmosphere would be hard-core, emphasizing a lot of sparring. That’s not the deal here. The emphasis is on developing more physical and mental strength, balance, fluidity, coordination and resilience. All these things – coupled with practiced technique - are essential to defending yourself, but they continually remind you that these are building blocks for the more commonplace goal of living a healthy, fulfilling life.
My 12-year-old daughter has been training with Oom Yung Doe for almost two years now. She informed us recently that her focus on academics and her energy for extracurricular activities are all due to her training with Oom Yung Doe. My husband and I are grateful to Will and Danielle and also to the other instructors from other locations and regional instructors who have given their time to help and share their lessons with our daughter.
When I was looking for a martial arts school for her two years ago, my goal was to find a school that can help give her confidence after experiencing some challenges in middle school. I checked other schools in the area and noticed that most schools were focusing much on strength, self-defense, self-discipline, perseverance, and confidence but not so much to train the body and mind to learn about self-worth, kindness, and respect not only for one's self but to her peers. From the moment she had her first visit the focused has never been about achieving a black belt but achieving a life based on values. Our family feels fortunate to have found a safe and supportive school for her to grow and be part of a community where she is accepted no matter where she is.
I love it here. Every lesson is better than the previous one. The instructors, Will and Danielle are respectful to us. And I have noticed how much I have grown in the last year.
Very good instructors! They develop children not only physically, but mentally. My children are getting more disciplined and well-behaved. Great tanks for your work and patience!
I learned self defense at Oom Yung Doe Watertown and it was great! The instructors (as well as the students) are all patient, thorough and super friendly. Highly recommend!
It has "top notch " instructors. They work to develop the students physically, mentally and spiritually. Within a month you can feel the difference. I would highly recommend this school for martial arts. I'm sure you will love it.
As an acupuncturist, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a high quality movement practice, something that is rare to find and that Oom Yung Doe truly provides. The instructors are able to offer individualized recommendations to support every body type, including those suffering from various illnesses or injuries. I strongly recommend trying out their classes to not only benefit your fitness but your health and longevity as well.
Excellent school. Great people and an authentic community. Head Instructor Will and Assistant Head Instructor Danielle are very knowledgeable and are great teachers. I’d highly recommend giving it a try.
The best workout you could ever treat yourself to! It's amazing how quickly you can transform yourself (and how fast I broke a sweat just holding the positions). Mindfulness and stress management, breathing exercises, building strength.. if you enjoy yoga, or maybe want to learn great self defense tactics, or just want to switch up your routine- this may be a great change of pace. For myself, running was not as engaging with my mind as I had required. I'm glad I ended up here.
Come visit a local school and see if it's right for you!
I have been training in Oom Yung Doe for many years, and I highly recommend it for everyone. The instructors are good and motivating and I have gained more from this training than I thought possible.
I started out looking into Oom yung doe to find a way to work out and learn something new but, I found so much more than I expected. It is challenging but also so much fun! You do everything based on your own ability.
There are so many different people from all walks of life and at different ages and stages of their lives involved in it. They are really why I enjoy it so much. It is an amazing experience to be surrounded by passionate people all trying to improve, not only their bodies but also their minds. We all have only one body and mind so why not take the time to try and improve both. You will learn to strengthen every single little part of yourself both physically and mentally.
The instructors are also amazing! They are extremely patient and flexible with teaching you. They are constantly helping you improve and teaching new things so that everyone can learn. Even if you need them to repeat the same thing over and over, they will gladly do it.
Ultimately, it is an amazing group of people and, you will have a lot of fun while improving yourself. If you are reading this review, you are at least somewhat interested in it so why not take the next step and talk to someone about it! You could keep saying one day or this could be your day one! You can decide that for yourself!
I'm almost 70 years old, and, as my lessons progress, I'm getting stronger and feeling younger. If you're getting to the age when you're concerned about falling, Oom Yung Doe will strengthen your body and your confidence. It's fun too.
The first thing I want to say is Oom Yung Doe is a blast to do! It's fun, incredibly challenging and the conditioning benefits are off the charts. Oom Yung Doe is 8 different martial arts taught in a seamless and cumulative manner. Class is offered 6 times a week with two different times a day to choose from.
This is an intact, chi (energetic) martial arts system based on a tradition of principles that help develop, rebalance and heal what ails you.
I’m in my early 60’s. I've been attending Oom Yung Doe for 6 and a half months. I’m in awe that decades old injuries which have limited any kind of deep conditioning activities are resolving.
Head Instructor Will and Assistant Head Instructor Danielle are awesome! They are impeccably well trained and passionate. It's inspiring to watch them work to improve and evolve their own practices. They are patient and effective teachers and their efforts are reflected in the progress of all of their students.
My fellow students make this program very special. We are all kinds of people, from all different walks of life and ages. We work and train together with respect and great fellowship. My fellow students, most simple said, are wonderful people to be around!
Doesn’t matter if you’re an elder, a young lion, lioness or little cub- you will get challenged and rewarded in ways you can’t even begin to imagine.
Seriously worth checking out and taking advantage of!
Great instructors: patients, flexible and calm. Life changing experience. Strengthened body, improved breathing and acquired self defense skills in first month. Very supportive atmosphere / helpful fellow students. Hidden gem in West Cambridge.
The training has done wonders for my flexibility and strength in my lower, middle, and upper body. I used to wake up with lower back pain, which is now gone. In just one year I can see a difference in how my body moves, which still doesn't compare to how my instructors can move. One thing that resonates with me is something that an instructor said recently, "No matter how impressive or strong a higher belt is, you can achieve that too. Remember that even they started out where you did, as a white belt." There is a community feel to the school, and everyone is trying to improve themselves together, in a motivating environment. Highly recommend this school if you are looking to gain strength, flexibility, or self defense skills.
I have been doing the Pal-ge movements that I learned at Oom Yung Doe Cambridge/Watertown for about a year. I had been suffering from lower back pain for the previous couple of years due to a bike accident. The movements, which I have done pretty consistently, have reduced my pain by at least 50 %. I was able to ride in the Pan Mass Challenge bike fundraiser this summer, something that I never thouht I would do again. Aside from the pain reduction, I feel stronger in my body, more grounded and more centered in my life. This martial arts discipline has proved a powerful way for me to gain health, strength and well being.
We are so grateful for in the instructor's thoughtful, careful, and disciplined approach to teaching our kids. He is really bringing out the best in them and they are growing leaps and bounds in this program. We recommend it highly.
Instructor Danielle and Will are very flexible and willing to work with your changing schedule. The lessons are professional and you get a lot out of them. I hadn't done any serious exercise in a while and found the lessons challenging but not overly grueling. I've already seen improvements in my physical health. I definitely suggest anyone coming in to try a lesson!
