Best Jiu Jitsu in Santa Fe - I’m a black belt and recent transplant from Los Angeles where top notch gyms are everywhere. While I’ve always trained both gi and no gi, the instruction and level of training here far out weighs my desire for gi classes. Ruben is an amazing coach, and 10th Planet Santa Fe is a great place to train. Ruben sticks with the same series of techniques for each class and ensures that students can use those techniques in increasingly realistic situations. This method of teaching allowed me to better understand how to implement the moves Ruben went over, rather than simply being taught a move and being left to figure it out. On top of that, Ruben curates an extremely friendly atmosphere but knows how to add a touch of competitiveness to get everyone to excel. All and all, the instruction at 10th Planet Santa Fe was among the best I've received—and I've trained for almost 10 years, off and on, in many different gyms across the U.S.

I was down in Santa Fe and trained at three different schools. I have experience traveling to schools and dropping in everywhere I go. Right off the gate, the greeting I received from head Coach Ruben made me realize this school felt different. Ruben's teaching is in-depth, not rushed, piece by piece, step by step. I gained knowledge each time I walked into his classes. It’s not all teaching, as Ruben is clearly an advocate for letting students work on their skills in live rounds. The school is real, legitimately run by an actual black belt coach. No gimmicks. I would highly recommend this school. I would love to train full-time under Ruben as I know he would improve my game.

Stopping by for a weekend? An extended stay? Permanently in town? If you train Jiu Jitsu and don’t stop by 10th Planet Santa Fe you’re missing out! I had the pleasure of calling 10p home while staying in Santa Fe for the winter. It’s nerve racking to walk into a new gym, but Ruben, Jennifer, and all their awesome students made me immediately feel like part of the family! My game significantly improved over my 5 months, and the friendships made there will last long after I leave. Their classes - beginner, intermediate, and advanced - provide value to a practitioner of any skill level. Open mat always offers technical, high level rolls, and on Thursdays, competitors, sport-focused hobbyists, or anyone else looking to polish their game can dial in the details during positional sparring. 10th Planet Santa Fe is a treasure I recommend to all who love Jiu Jitsu!

I can’t say enough good things about Ruben. I first met Ruben when he was coaching out of 10th Planet Orange County, and even though it has been 3 years since he and his family relocated to Sante Fe, his name still comes up regularly in class. Both from the other coaches, and students, that he positively impacted. His classes and method of instructions is concise, and very meaningful. The most improvement in my jiujitsu over the shortest amount of time occurred during my time with Ruben, and my only regret is that I didn’t have more time with him. The best no gi training you will get in the state! The coaching trifecta… a good human being, a skilled practitioner and an able teacher. Frequently you’ll get 2 of these 3 things but in a lifetime you get all 3 from one instructor a handful of times, at best. Ruben is a wonderful person, an expert in jiu jitsu and an amazing teacher. Omg where do I begin. I use to train with Ruben out in Costa Mesa CA. I knew from the first class he was something special. Really good teachers do not just teach you about martial arts they pair those lessons with life. Ruben is one of the best black belts I have ever had the privilege of Learning under. My only complaint is that he moved away. He has a special way of empowering his students while still making you feel like family. I traveled to Santa Fe to visit family, I also found a great place to Train 😊10 planet Jiujitsu Santa Fe has a great environment, Ruben has very high level instruction and also gives the students context an the why ? We use this technique an how it’s relative in many positions, I feel this is extremely helpful for beginners an also rusty practitioners. Hands down the best place to train in town, If not the state! Coach Ruben is a Top tear instructor and practitioner of the art. Ruben is an understanding instructor who takes time with each student. I would recommend this gym to anyone wanting to start training Jiu Jitsu.

Sensei Ruben and his team of coaches have created an incredible atmosphere at 10th planet Santa Fe that is at the same time both nourishing to newcomers (like me) and elite for higher ranking belts. The community of athletes have been extremely welcoming and open since I joined a few months ago, which has been a great social tool since we moved to the area less than a year ago. Overall, joining the gym has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in recent memory.

I dropped in on a Thursday evening. Participated in the wrestling class, the instructor Ruben was very clear with his instruction and very technical. He taught a series, which gave you multiple options to take someone down without wasting energy, it was a good class. I stayed for the competition class and it was excellently ran. We went through various competition scenarios, hard training but in a good way. Everyone was very welcoming and nice. If you are on the fence, definitely go check them out to see what’s up.

Where can I start, my kiddo was getting bullied at school and by some weird reason I posted about it on Facebook. That’s when Ruben Rivera talked to me about the classes and got me in contact with Vin Barreda. I took my child in for her first lesson. A timid, shy quiet child turned into a confident, outspoken, and strong human being. All thanks to her coach. He was patient, understanding and just wanted the best for my child. This was the best thing we did. She loved going to her classes and learn something new. I am forever grateful! Can’t wait to get her back on the mat!

I went to 10th planet before Covid and the coaches were awesome and the atmosphere and culture was amazing. I ended up working down in Albuquerque and just couldn’t make it work with my schedule after that. Looking forward to getting back to jiu jitsu some day.

10th Planet Santa Fe is the best place in the whole state to train jujitsu. The coaches are so deliberate with technique and concepts of jujitsu. Amazing fundamentals class to advanced competitive classes. In addition to an amazing community of people who are all not only dedicated to athletic growth but cultivating personal growth. If you are interested in jiu-jitsu and are lucky enough to live close to Santa Fe, you should definitely talk to the coaches at this school. This school is open all day, with classes for all schedules. The coaches frequently compete for national and world titles. There is a large number of advanced levels who will roll with anyone, yet extreme caution and common sense is used. None of the coaches allow sloppy and foolish techniques that will get people hurt. From day one you are learning solid fundamentals and the coaches roll with the students.

Amazing place! They have a great kids program. My son has been in the program for a year now. It has helped him build his confidence. The coaches truly care about every kid in the class and they make everyone feel welcomed. They also have an adults class which is just as amazing as the kids. I would highly recommend everyone to give it a try!
