I once had a child who attended this academy. I am in agreement with other concerned reviewers that the care, concern, and overall quality of this academy declined dramatically in the last year or so, resulting in us discontinuing lessons.
While there used to be a much more hands-on, individual experience, in which more detail was applied to give a better experience of bestowing the values and understanding of the sport, as well as greater supervision in order to better prevent the risk of injury, or bad faith sparring from occurring, this level of quality has essentially vanished.
The head coach, who used to be often present, now rarely shows for class in the span of a week, or leaves early. As mentioned by others here, he often delegates to his more advanced students who, while are respectful and are decent individuals, lack the full training and tact of a qualified brown belt to wholly supervise what has now become a very big (arguably too big of class for such a small shared gym space) class, and they tend to be Blue/Purple belts, nowhere near the level of Brown belt. This has led to a marked decline in quality of making sure each individual gets the full care they need in training to proceed, and a failure to notice when bad sportsmanship occurs - leading to my friend's child being injured by those who deliberately looked to injure and tease him as they were disgruntled that he had beaten them before.
The upper students essentially run classes, and even parts of the business for Thaabiet, helping him with tasks such as running classes alone and organizing whole events, allowing him to take more of a back seat in managing the place. This is effectively misleading marketing, because when you expect to receive a more personal, safe, and caring training experience for yourself or your child, from a highly qualified and knowledgeable coach of the sport. you are now faced with massively full sessions which become unfocused, feel more commercialized and result in a greater potential risk for you when attending, as seen by others here who have commented on receiving injuries due to lack of supervision.
We knew other individuals who previously approached with their concerns, hoping to receive positive answers, only to receive an incredibly insulting response. He is litigious and did not take well to criticism, which only soured our opinion further and bode poorly on the future prospects of the academy.
There are other places in Cape Town that offer alternative BJJ and MMA solutions. It would be wise to take a look at those before considering this academy, which while once in a better state, has now declined to the point that I would not recommend anyone to attend.
