Headed into my third week of training with One Hit MMA. I think this is a good time to share some reflections.
For context, I'm 37 years old.
Aldo, the other coaches, and every fighter I've met have all been incredibly friendly, helpful, and acutely aware of the skill levels of the students around them. Training is tailored accordingly. The gym is clean, well stocked with equipment, and has an awesome vibe.
The morning classes are smaller and probably better for beginners or for those who do this recreationally instead of with the intent to fight, but some advanced fighters always show up to the morning classes too.
The night classes are full of legit fighters with a lot of experience, many who fight in the championships in the cage.
While there is an awareness of different skill levels, nobody in the adult class is treated like a child. If you're in the adult class, you're expected to show up on time, pay attention, put in effort, and act like an adult or switch to the kids class.
As for kids... I enrolled my 6-year-old. She trains kickboxing with Aldo and Jiu Jitsu with Gustavo and she absolutely loves it. The coaches are very kid friendly and super patient. I'm really grateful for that. It motivates the kids. My daughter constantly asks if it's time for class yet.
Some things for beginners to expect if you train with One Hit MMA...
1) You will learn new techniques each class.
2) You will practice previously learned techniques.
3) You will have opportunities to apply those techniques.
4) You will spar with people better than you.
5) You will get punched in the face and kicked in the gut.
6) You will roll with people better than you in Jiu-Jitsu.
7) You will get tapped out.
8) You will sweat, and you will be sore.
9) You will wonder how much your body can take.
10) And you will be proud of yourself for what you achieve, the confidence you build, the skills you learn, the abilities you gain, the friends you make, and for the overall changes that start to take place in your life from your very first lesson onward.
In just 3 short weeks, One Hit MMA is my new favorite place to be, so I try to be there as much as possible, and I look forward to where my training will take me over the coming year.
If you're on the fence about joining, just show up. Talk to Aldo (or anyone in the gym for that matter). Ask questions. Take a class.
Once you experience it in person, you'll know why it's the right place to be whether you want to train kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, or become a legit MMA fighter.
