This is a very good BJJ gym. I was traveling here in Florence for a month and I reached out to MatSide. I reached out on instagram and WhatsApp. They responded immediately with their schedule and were very welcoming to me to train while traveling. The instructors here are knowledgeable and accommodating. The other athletes in the gym are extremely friendly as well, and everyone in the gym is very helpful with the language barrier. The atmosphere here is GREAT. And the training is competitive. Whether you are traveling or if you live here, this is a very good place to train is you want to get good at BJJ and make friends in the sport! Highly recommend training here! 🇨🇦🥋🇮🇹
Posted 1 year agoI visited Italy from the United States June 2024 and was able to drop in at MatSide Firenze. It was an amazing experience from beginning to end. I first contacted MatSide Firenze via Instagram to ask if they allowed drop ins. They were quick to respond and very welcoming. When I first arrived, the instructor had a loaner gi ready for me to use. I had planned on training during my trip, so I had my own gi and didn’t need it, but was impressed by their initiative to make me feel welcomed. I dropped in for a morning class and happened to be the only female training that day, but I never felt intimidated. All the students and instructors were total gentlemen! I got great training and made new friends! Definitely recommend!
Posted 1 year agoI trained here one night traveling from the US, and if it weren’t for our busy itinerary, I would have trained more! The owner made it super easy offering to rent me a loaner gi and the team was very nice and welcoming. The instruction was easy to follow (even though I don’t speak Italian), detailed, and quality. My training partner was also very helpful and clarified any questions I had about the technique in English. Another highlight is the small, but dedicated group of female members; there were 4 other women in the class I took. Most important, whenever I train somewhere new, or roll with someone new, I want to feel safe. The learning experience felt safe and collaborative! I hope to make it back there if I’m ever in Florence again. *From what I was able to determine, this is the only gym near the center of Florence which made it convenient for me, not having a car.
Posted 1 year agoMy new favourite place to train in Italy. Incredible heritage, 120-years old in 2024. Love the old-school vibe but also the welcome from everyone at this amazing academy. Emiliano is such a laid-back, knowledgeable coach and super friendly with excellent English (my Italian is minimal at best). 100% recommend this spot to anyone looking to train in Florence
Posted 2 years agoI visited this gym for two weeks while visiting Florence this year from Australia. The instructors were very welcoming to let me do some classes and it was very fun and a friendly environment. Although I do not speak Italian they were able to translate some instructions to English for me and all the instructors were happy to roll with me.
